The Blood of Dawnwalker: Into the Den Full Quest Walkthrough

Track the bear den, read the letter, and dig up the X-marked cache without losing the loot to the clock.

Track the bear den, read the letter, and dig up the X-marked cache without losing the loot to the clock.

Into the Den is a short optional quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker that starts inside a bear’s den in Vale Sangora and ends at an old logging site, where a cache sits buried under flat stones marked with a painted X. It can be picked up during the Prologue, but the clock matters more than the fight does.

Quick answer: Kill the Ravenous Bear west of the Northern Foothills Shrine, loot the Tattered Letter from the corpse inside its den, then travel to the quest circle and interact with the flat stones beneath the X painted on the wall of the western hut.

Into the Den quest details and time cost

Everything about the quest fits into a single Time Segment, which is the resource you actually spend here. Coen only has a limited number of segments before the Prologue moves on, so treat the hour as the real price of the reward.

Time Segments and the Mass: When to do this quest

Interacting with the cache pushes the clock forward by one hour. If you dig it up with only a single segment left before the Mass, the quest can tick over as complete while the Prologue moves on and the items in the hole slip past you.

Tip: Keep at least two Time Segments in hand before the Mass when you plan to open the stash. If you are short, skip Into the Den for now. The bear, the body, and the cache all remain available after the Prologue ends, so nothing is permanently lost by waiting.

How to start Into the Den at the bear den

Set out from the Northern Foothills Shrine and head west. A quest marker appears on the map to point you toward the den, and the bear itself patrols the rocky, wooded ground near the cave mouth.
Kill the Ravenous Bear guarding the entrance. Looting it yields Bear Fur, Bear Meat, Bear Liver, and Animal Bones, all of which are useful crafting and cooking stock early on.

Go inside the cave and find the mutilated body on the floor. Fireflies hover above it, and switching to Focus Mode highlights the correct corpse in yellow or gold if the interior is too dark to read.
Loot the body to accept the quest. The Tattered Letter is the item that matters, though the corpse also carries Tall Boots, Denarius, Buttermilk, and Linseed Oil.

Open the letter and read it. The text describes a stash inside a hut at an old logging site, hidden beneath a large flat stone bearing the sign of an X, and the objective updates to “Find a secret cache marked with X.”

Secret cache marked with X location

Open the map. A quest circle now covers the search area rather than a single pin, so the game will not walk you directly to the spot.
Travel to the logging site and ignore the eastern structures. The cache sits with the huts on the western side of the marked circle.

Check the walls of the small hut on the west side. A large X is painted on the wall, with flat stones stacked directly underneath it.
Interact with the stones to dig out the hole. This is the action that advances time by one hour, so make sure your remaining segments are where you want them before pressing the prompt.
Loot the contents of the hole. The prompt appears over the uncovered pile, and taking the items is a separate action from uncovering them.

How to confirm Into the Den is complete

The objective list runs through three stages. First “Investigate the body”, then “Find a secret cache marked with X”, and finally “Inspect the flat rock marked with X” once you are standing on the right spot. When the hole opens, Coen remarks on the weapons, silver, and provisions inside and identifies it as a manumit cache. The 100 XP lands at that point and the quest closes in the journal.

There are only two common ways this goes wrong. Searching the wrong side of the quest circle wastes travel time because the eastern buildings hold nothing, and opening the cache with a single Time Segment left before the Mass burns the hour before you can empty the hole.

Into the Den rewards

RewardNotes
100 XPGranted for completing the quest
Letter with a TipUnlocks a dialogue option with the Silver Trader in Svartrau City that forces him to trade Silver with Coen, without needing the usual Infamy level
Rebel’s Falchion SwordSolid early-game weapon, replaced fairly quickly
Artisan’s TunicEarly-game armour piece
TurnipBasic provision

The tunic and the falchion are the kind of gear you will swap out within a few hours of exploring Vale Sangora, which makes the Letter with a Tip the reason to bother. Trading Silver is otherwise restricted, and that single document removes the requirement to raise Infamy before the Svartrau City merchant will deal with you.
