The Blood of Dawnwalker: Where to Find the Secret Cache Marked With X

The Into the Den cache sits inside a hut at the old logging site, and looting it burns an hour of in-game time.

The objective “Find a secret cache marked with X” shows up in The Blood of Dawnwalker after Coen reads a letter pulled off a body in a bear’s den. The letter is deliberately vague about the spot, pointing only at a hut at an old logging site, a big stone, and an X. The quest area highlighted on your map covers a fair bit of ground, but the cache itself is in one specific building.

Quick answer: Travel to the old logging site marked on your map, go to the western huts, and interact with the flat stones under the X painted on the wall to loot the cache and complete Into the Den.

Secret cache location at the old logging site

Open the map and look for the shaded quest area in the northern part of the region. This is the old logging camp, and it is the only place the cache can appear. Set it as your tracked objective so the marker stays on your compass.

Ride or run into the camp and head for the wooden huts on the western side of the marked zone. There are chests and containers scattered around the outside of the buildings, which are worth a quick sweep, but none of them is the cache.

Step inside the hut and look for the large X painted on the wall, with flat stones piled at its base on the dirt floor. Coen comments on the stone marked with a cross when you get close, confirming it matches the letter. Interact with the stones to open the hiding place.

Tip: If you cannot pick the spot out in the gloom, Focus Mode highlights the interactable stone.

Time cost: The cache advances the clock by one hour

Searching the cache is not free. Interacting with the stones consumes 1 Time Segment, which is one hour of in-game time. That matters during the Prologue, where the countdown to rescue your family and the Mass both run on the same clock.

If you start the search with only one segment left before the Mass, you can technically register the quest as finished and still be pulled away before you get to open the container. Give yourself at least 2 Time Segments of breathing room. The safer option is to skip Into the Den entirely during the Prologue — the logging site stays accessible afterwards, and the quest can be finished later at no cost to the story clock.

Into the Den rewards and cache contents

Completing Into the Den awards 100 XP. The stash itself holds a mix of early-game gear, a quest document, and one piece of food.

The tunic and the falchion are solid for the early hours, though you will outgrow both fairly quickly as better gear turns up. Use Loot All so nothing is left behind in the hole.

Letter with a Tip: The reward that actually carries forward

The document is the reason to bother with this cache at all. It is a note from “G.” to Toni about hunting for someone willing to trade in silver, with the trail leading to the Neustadt district. Reading it opens a dialogue option with the Silver Trader in Svartrau City, letting Coen press him into dealing in silver without first grinding Infamy up to the level the trader normally demands.

That shortcut pays off later, since several treasure hunts hand you silver goods that are only worth real money once you have a buyer.

If the objective has not appeared yet: Starting Into the Den

The cache stones will not respond until Coen has read the letter that names them. To get it, start at the Northern Foothills Shrine and travel west until you run into a bear, using the quest marker on the map to narrow down the den.

Kill the bear, then go into the den and inspect the corpse inside. Focus Mode makes this easier — the correct body glows yellow or gold. Take the letter, read it from your inventory, and the objective to find the marked cache appears along with the search zone on your map.

How to confirm the quest completed

Looting the stash triggers a “QUEST ENDED — Into the Den” banner along with the 100 XP payout. Reading the Letter with a Tip afterwards immediately starts the follow-up quest, Echoes of Silenced Bells, with the first objective to meet Anica at the old inn.

If the quest closed but your inventory is empty of the tunic and falchion, the clock ran out mid-search. Load an earlier save with more time on it and repeat the search rather than hunting for a second cache, because there is only one.
