The Blood of Dawnwalker: Where to Use Simeon’s Key

Simeon’s Key is one of those quest items that lands in your inventory with almost no explanation. The description only tells you it was “Found on the body of the late doctor,” and no map marker appears to point you at the lock it opens. The answer sits in the same building where the doctor’s story ends.

Quick answer: Take Simeon’s Key to Simeon’s house in Svartrau City, climb to the top floor, enter the room on the right, and interact with the wooden chest against the left wall under the window to trigger the “Open with Simeon’s Key” prompt.

How you get Simeon’s Key in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The key is handed out as part of A Study in Crimson, the quest chain you pick up from Vicho, the curio dealer in Svartrau City. The trail ends in a basement where Doctor Simeon has turned into a vrakhiri, and the fight with him closes the quest.

Simeon’s Key arrives alongside the rest of the quest payout, which includes the Mercenary’s Amulet and Murohn Blood. It is flagged as a quest item, so it stays in your inventory until it is used and cannot be sold or dropped by accident.

Where to use Simeon’s Key in Svartrau City

The lock is inside Simeon’s house, the same building the quest sends you to in Svartrau City. Nothing about the chest is marked on the map, so you have to walk up to it yourself.

Open your map and travel back to Simeon’s house in Svartrau City. If you used the key immediately after the boss fight, you are already standing in the right building and only need to head upstairs.

Enter the house and take the staircase all the way to the top floor. Ignore the lower rooms, since the lockbox is not on the ground level.

On the top floor, go through the doorway on the right. This is a small room rather than a corridor, so you should see the whole space as soon as you step in.

Look to the left wall, underneath the window. The wooden chest sits flat against it and blends in with the rest of the furniture, so approach it directly rather than scanning from the doorway.

Interact with the chest. The prompt reads “Open with Simeon’s Key,” and the key is consumed as the lid opens, dropping the full loot table straight into the container window.

The chest is a single, one-time reward. Nothing here is randomized, so the contents will match the list below on any playthrough.

Tip: take the letter as well as the gear. It is the piece that carries the story forward, and Coen reacts to it once it has been read.

How to confirm the chest actually opened

Two things tell you it worked. The container window pops open with all five entries listed, and Simeon’s Key disappears from your inventory once the lock is spent. If the key is still sitting there, the chest was never opened.

If the interaction prompt does not appear, you are almost always at the wrong container. The room contains ordinary lootable objects that open without a key, and the correct chest is specifically the wooden one on the left-hand wall beneath the window. The other reason is simply not owning the key yet, which means A Study in Crimson has not been finished and Simeon’s body has not been searched.

What A Letter Found in the Warehouse leads to

Reading the letter introduces Ivo, a farmer, and that name matters later. Head to the medic’s shop in the southeastern part of Svartrau City and speak to the herbalist there to pick up The Good Samaritan, which sends you out to a farm on what looks like a simple medicine delivery.

That quest is what eventually opens up Unquenchable Thirst and the conversation that decides whether Vicho survives. Opening the lockbox is not strictly required to reach any of that, but the letter is the cleanest signpost the game gives you toward the rest of Vicho’s arc, and the master recipe and level 23 boots are worth the short walk back regardless.
