The Witcher 3: How to Skip Time With Meditation

Use meditation to jump the clock forward, restock potions, and wait out the night in seconds.

Use meditation to jump the clock forward, restock potions, and wait out the night in seconds.

Meditation is the built-in way to move the clock forward in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It lets Geralt fast-forward hours or a full day while he stays in one place, which is handy when a quest expects you at a certain time or you just want the sun to come up before you explore.

Quick answer: Open the meditation menu (default N on PC, or the sign radial then the prompt on console), drag the clock to the hour you want, and confirm. You can skip up to 24 hours per session.

Open meditation and skip time

Geralt can only meditate while standing still, out of combat, and off Roach. The meditation tab sits in the same menu as the World Map, on the far right of the list.

Get to a safe spot with no enemies nearby. On PC, press N to jump straight to the meditation screen. On console, bring up the quick panel for swapping signs (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox), then press the meditation prompt (Square on PS4, X on Xbox, Y on the Switch port).
Rotate the hands on the clock to pick when you want to wake up. The wheel is split into quarters for Dawn, Midday, Dusk, and Midnight, but you can stop at any hour in between. The smallest unit is one hour.
Confirm to meditate. Time jumps ahead instantly and Geralt wakes at the hour you set. If you need to move several days forward, repeat the process, since a single session tops out at 24 hours.

Meditate until 5 AM when you want to fast travel out of a dead-of-night stretch. Blacksmiths and merchants close overnight and reopen around then, so waiting for morning saves you standing around town.

What meditation does on each difficulty

Meditation always advances time. What changes with difficulty is whether it also heals you.

DifficultyRestores VitalityRestocks potions/bombs
Just the Story / Sword and StoryYes (one hour fully heals)Yes, with strong alcohol
Blood and Broken Bones! / Death MarchNoYes, with strong alcohol

On the lower settings, one hour of meditation refills Geralt’s health and clears Toxicity at no cost. On the higher settings, meditation will not heal you at all, so keep healing potions and food on hand and lean on meditation mainly for time skips and potion restocking.

Restock potions and bombs during meditation

While meditating, Geralt refills his potions and bombs automatically by consuming Strong Alcohol from your inventory. This works regardless of difficulty. The game pulls from your stock in this order:

  • White Gull
  • Alcohest
  • Dwarven Spirit

One hour is enough to top off your alchemy items. If you have none of these alcohols, potions and bombs will not refill, so it is worth keeping a bottle or two on you at all times.

Move time forward without meditating

Meditation is disabled when enemies are nearby or you are in combat. When you cannot use it, two other actions still push the clock ahead.

Fast travel between signposts

Using a signpost to travel across the map advances time to reflect the distance Geralt would have ridden. A long trip, such as crossing Velen into Novigrad, skips several in-game hours while also moving you toward your next objective.

Story cutscenes and dialogue

Many main-quest conversations are scripted to end at a set time of day so the lighting matches the scene. If an objective asks you to meet someone at a certain hour, starting the lead-in dialogue can trigger a cinematic jump to that point on its own.

When time skipping is worth it

Changing the clock is useful for more than convenience; some quests require a particular time. In Count Reuven’s Treasure, Geralt’s meeting with Triss at the Eternal Fire shrine takes place around midnight. If he arrives ahead of time, meditating for a few hours starts the scene, so he doesn’t have to wait.

Meditating for a full day or two away from a vendor also refreshes merchant stock and gold, which helps when you are offloading loot to fund expensive gear. Certain monsters are tied to the time of day as well, so shifting to daytime or nightfall lets you hunt them when they appear.

Confirming the time skip worked

You will know meditation succeeded the moment the screen returns and the world reflects the new hour, with the lighting and sky matching the time you selected. On the lower difficulties, your Vitality bar refilling and any Toxicity clearing is the confirmation that healing applied. Your potion and bomb counts returning to full, as long as you carried Strong Alcohol, confirms the restock. If those alchemy items stay empty, you were out of White Gull, Alcohest, and Dwarven Spirit.
