Valheim 1.0: How to Get the Grappling Hook

The Hook drops only inside Mistlands Infested Mines, and picking one up is what unlocks the crafting recipe.

The Hook drops only inside Mistlands Infested Mines, and picking one up is what unlocks the crafting recipe.

The Grappling Hook is the traversal tool Valheim spent five years without, and the 1.0 release finally hands it over. It fires at walls, cliffs, and structures, reels you in, and leaves you hanging until you decide where to go next. The catch is that it is gated behind the Mistlands, not the Deep North, so the whole shopping list comes from one foggy, hostile biome.

Quick answer: Loot a Hook from a Dvergr Treasure Chest inside a Mistlands Infested Mine, then craft the Grappling Hook at a Forge using 1 Hook, 4 Mandibles, 10 Refined Eitr, and 10 Yggdrasil Wood.

Grappling Hook recipe and crafting station

The Grappling Hook is built at the Forge. The recipe stays hidden until a Hook enters your inventory, so there is no point standing at the workbench with the other three materials and wondering why nothing appears.

Where to find the Hook in Infested Mines

The Hook cannot be crafted, bought, or farmed off an enemy. It sits in loot, and only inside the Seeker dungeons buried in the Mistlands. Drop rates are low enough that clearing a single mine may not be sufficient, so plan on several runs.

Find an Infested Mine entrance in the Mistlands. These are the black marble dungeon structures wedged into the biome’s rocky terrain, and they are the same places you already visit for Black Cores and Sealbreaker fragments.
Work through the interior and watch the walls, not just the corridors. Hooks are stashed behind secret stone doors marked with glowing blue runes, which open when you interact with the sigil.
Open the Dvergr Treasure Chest in the hidden room. That is the container the Hook rolls from, and you only ever need one.

You will know it worked immediately. Picking up the Hook unlocks the Grappling Hook recipe, and the item shows up as a new craftable entry at the Forge.

Farming Mandibles, Yggdrasil Wood, and Refined Eitr

Everything else on the list is standard Mistlands progression material. If you already assembled a Carapace Armor set, check your chests before you go hunting, because you may be sitting on the Mandibles already.

MaterialHow to collect it
MandibleKill Seeker Soldiers. They are the large, wingless variant that looks like a stag beetle rather than an ant, and they patrol Infested Mines aggressively.
Yggdrasil WoodChop Mistlands trees and Yggdrasil shoots with a Black Metal Axe or better. A shoot drops 20 pieces of mixed wood, including the type you need.
SapPlace a Sap Extractor on the glowing Ancient Roots found across the Mistlands.
Soft TissueMine the nodes inside Giant skull remains and the flesh mounds in Putrid Holes with a Black Metal pickaxe or better. Dvergr crates, rogues, and mages also drop it.
Refined EitrProcess Sap and Soft Tissue together in an Eitr Refinery.

If you have not built the refinery yet, it costs 20 Black Marble, 5 Black Metal, 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 5 Black Core, and 3 Sap. That single station is the longest detour on the whole checklist.

How to use the Grappling Hook

It occupies both hands, so you cannot swing a sword while it is equipped. Aim at a solid surface and left-click to fire. The line latches on, pulls you toward the anchor point, and then leaves you dangling.

From there, tapping the jump button twice reactivates the pull and drags you further along the rope, which is how you climb walls or cross gaps in stages. Right-click releases the hook. If you hang without pressing anything, you slowly slide back down the line.

Each activation costs 10 stamina, and there is a reload delay after every shot, shown by a “Loading Grappling Hook” bar at the bottom of the screen. That delay matters most when you are trying to escape a fall or a fight, so do not treat the hook as an instant panic button. It also does nothing about fall damage, and cutting the line too high still hurts.

If the recipe still isn’t appearing

There is really only one reason the Grappling Hook is missing from your Forge menu, and it is the Hook. The recipe is tied to the pickup, not to the other three materials, so stockpiling Refined Eitr and Mandibles does nothing on its own. Surface loot and ordinary chests will not cover it either. The Hook comes out of Dvergr Treasure Chests inside Infested Mines, and if you are walking past unmarked stone walls without checking for blue glyphs, you are skipping the rooms that hold them.

Once it is built, the hook carries forward into the Deep North, where multi-level dungeons and deep pockets of terrain can otherwise strand you. Crafting it before you head north is the difference between exploring those structures and climbing back out of them the hard way.
