Valheim 1.0 New Content: Deep North Biome and Kall Fimbulbringer

A full breakdown of the biome, boss, weapons, armor, mechanics, and balance changes that shipped with Valheim's 1.0 release.

A full breakdown of the biome, boss, weapons, armor, mechanics, and balance changes that shipped with Valheim’s 1.0 release.

Valheim left early access on September 9, 2026, and the 1.0 update is the largest single content drop the game has ever received. It closes out the biome roadmap Iron Gate laid out in 2021 with the Deep North, adds a final boss, and touches nearly every system in the game — combat, farming, cooking, building, inventory, saving, and performance.

Quick answer: Version 1.0 adds the Deep North biome, the boss Kall Fimbulbringer, 40+ weapons, 4 armor sets, 10+ creatures, 80+ build pieces, 20+ foods, purchasable inventory upgrades, and 50+ achievements. It is a free update for existing owners, but Deep North terrain only generates in parts of your world you have never explored.

The headline numbers are worth reading before you dig into specifics, because they explain why the update feels closer to a re-release than a patch. Everything below ships in the base game at no extra cost.

Deep North biome: deep snow, frozen water, and two dungeons

The Deep North sits at the far northern edge of every world, past the ocean. Snow lies thick enough that you have to clear it with the new Snow Shovel before you can place a building piece, and it visibly piles onto roofs during storms. Frozen seas and ponds are walkable but fragile, so ice can crack under you, and ships can smash through sheets to break them apart.

New locations include abandoned villages, stave halls, ice ponds, memorial sites, and the Forge of Potential. Two dungeon types come with the biome. The Winding Tunnels are entered through openings inside large village houses and hold Frostcore, Moulds, and Luminous Larvae. The Gates of Mörkhalla sit behind fortress-like structures and need an Intricate Key, which you craft after finding the Moulds.

New creatures and the Kall Fimbulbringer boss

Kall Fimbulbringer is a Jotun who holds a lair deep in the frozen north, and he caps the boss progression that began with Eikthyr. Around him are ten new hostile creatures plus a handful of neutral ones, including a Moose that can be tamed and ridden with the new Moose Saddle.

Petrified Gammeltrolls are a resource node rather than a fight. You blow them apart with Ember Charges to get Petrified Tissue, which smelts into Bloodgold. Ember Charges also break the ice sheets along the Deep North shore.

Nord, Frostfire, and Thunderblood weapons, staves, and shields

The weapon list is built around three tiers, each covering the same twelve classes. Nord weapons are cast from Bloodgold using Moulds found in the Winding Tunnels, and each one can be upgraded with two gemstones. Frostfire and Thunderblood are the elemental variants above them.

The staves are the most distinctive additions. Echo Spike fires a frozen projectile, Lightning Strike calls a bolt down on a targeted spot, Spirit Caller summons a ghost wolf, bear, or moose to fight beside you, and Northern Vengeance reworks the Staff of Protection so attackers take damage instead of the shield simply absorbing the hit.

New armor sets, capes, and trinkets

Four full sets arrive, covering heavy, medium, mage, and light play. Each is three pieces — chest, legs, and a head slot — and they are joined by two capes, two trinkets, and two standalone crowns.

Capes also behave differently now. The update adds the Magica Cloth system, which handles cape and cloth movement across the game rather than only on the new items.

Bloodgold, Timberwood, and the new crafting stations

Bloodgold is the Deep North metal and Timberwood is its wood, and Timberwood is plantable, so you can farm the tier’s building material instead of hauling it. Timberwood feeds the new Scalewood structures.

StationWhat it does

Materials beyond those two metals include Frostfire Essence, Thunderblood Essence, Liquid Frost, Nornathread, Crown Jewel, Embers, Ice, Long Claws, Dead Pulp, Elaking Hair Bundle, Writhan Roots, Frozen Branch, and Seal Blubber and Pelts, plus eleven new trophies.

New farming plants and food items

Farming gains four plantables — Kale, Oats, Poteitr, and Timberwood — and Lingonberries can be harvested from bushes. That feeds a cooking list of more than twenty recipes, most of them built from the new crops rather than combat drops.

The full spread runs from Baked Poteitr, Meatballs and Poteitr, and Pulled Bear to Oatmeal, Oat Milk, Oat Flour, Pancakes, Oven Pancake, Kale Chips, Lingonberry Juice, Fish Soup, Smoked Fish, Seal Meat Soup, Cooked Seal Blubber, Cooked and Smoked Moose Meat, Meat In Bread, and a feast called Northern Morning Fare.

New mechanics: grappling hook, idols, and pocket upgrades

The grappling hook is unlocked in the Mistlands, has unlimited uses, and lets you climb cliffs and swing across gaps anywhere in the world. It pairs with the vertical layout of the Winding Tunnels, but it is not restricted to the new biome.

Sixteen Protection and Battle Idols are scattered across the world. Bring one to the Forge of Potential and you can push an item’s upgrade beyond its old ceiling. Haldor now sells two inventory upgrades, Deeper Pockets and Wider Pockets, and a Wardrobe build piece offers considerably more storage than a Black Metal Chest.

Two world events cover the Jotun invasion, announced in-game as “The Jotun have found you” and “They emerge from below…”. Separately, the outer edges of a world can now generate alternate versions of early biomes, such as Rocky Birch Meadows and a Deforested Black Forest.

New build pieces and furniture

Most of the 80-plus build pieces exist to fill in steeper angles. There are 67° variants for Ashwood, Shingle, Thatch, Wood, Darkwood, Iron Wood, and Log sets, plus fifteen Scalewood wall pieces at 26°, 45°, and 67° in left, right, and inverted versions, and fifteen Timber poles and beams.

Functional additions include the Drawbridge, Rustic Drawbridge, and Timber Drawbridge, the Ice Block, Timber Gate, Roundpole Gate, Stone Fence, and Lathed Timber Wall. Furniture covers the Antler Throne, Carved Bench and Chair, Long and Square Carved Tables, Grausten Chest, Wardrobe, Moose Hide Carpet, and Sealskin Rug. Twelve metal and ore stacks let you display Bloodgold, Flametal, Timberwood, obsidian, and the rest, and the Hooded Lantern can be placed inside the Winding Tunnels to mark your way out.

Changes to Black Forest, Mistlands, and Ashlands

Older zones were rebalanced alongside the new content, mostly to cut down on grinding and gear repair.

AreaChange
Black ForestBjorn spawns less often and has less health
MistlandsGear durability increased; mist removal range raised on Wisp Light, Wisp Torch, and Mistwalker, and added to all Mistlands weapons
AshlandsGear durability increased; several enemy spawn chances reduced; Charred monsters respawn on a shorter timer
All biomesRare enemy drops reworked so long kill streaks stop producing nothing
OceanNo changes in 1.0

Performance, save system, and interface changes

The engine was upgraded to a newer version of Unity, and a Draw Distance graphics setting now controls simulation distance. A shorter distance improves performance; a longer one costs frames but extends the view on stronger hardware.

The save system now splits world data into chunks so less data is written at once, which speeds up saving and makes a save more resilient if a write is interrupted. Loading new areas produces fewer microstutters, and large builds hold up better.

Interface work includes overhauled hammer and serving tray menus, rewritten descriptions for every build piece, and an optional HUD window showing who built each piece on a server. Player movement animations were redone, every hair and beard style is unlocked from character creation with a new masculine hairstyle added, and the hoe can place two boulder types.

New console commands in 1.0

Nineteen developer commands were added, with descriptions available through the console help command.

confirmcheats, achievements, getstat, haslocation, snow, updatecover,
cinematic, cinematicsleep, inventorysize, inventoryclean, clearpopups,
height, pevents, repairall, resetbuildui, biomeinfo, altbiomes,
findbiome, findbiometp

Note: most cheat commands permanently disable achievements on the affected character and world. Hammer Mode and carrying spawned items only disable them while active. Keep console commands off any character you plan to hunt achievements on.

Platforms, crossplay, price, and achievements

September 9 was also Valheim’s first day on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Those join Steam on Windows, Linux, and Mac, the Mac App Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and every platform plays together.

ItemDetail
CrossplayFull crossplay between all supported platforms
Save syncOnly between Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version
Server size1 to 10 players
Price$29.99, up from $19.99; free update for existing owners
Download size~4.3 GiB on most platforms, ~3.0 GiB on Xbox One, ~6.5 GiB on Microsoft Store and Mac App Store
Achievements53, tracked from the moment 1.0 is installed

Achievement tracking is not retroactive. If an achievement asks you to kill a specific boss, a kill from before the update does not count, so you will need to do it again. Mods are the other caveat, since Valheim has no official mod support and existing mods generally stop working until their authors rebuild them for 1.0. There is no Steam Workshop or console mod support, and there was no public test branch ahead of release. The complete detailed patch notes are posted on the official Valheim site.

Do you need a new world for the Deep North?

Existing characters and worlds keep working after the update, and you can sail north immediately. The catch is world generation. New terrain and locations only appear in areas nobody has explored yet, so if you have already walked the far north on your map, that ground keeps its old empty layout. This is the same rule that applied to the Mistlands and Ashlands rollouts.

Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world for the full experience. Characters are stored separately from worlds, so your existing viking, skills, and gear can move into a new map without starting over. Back up important character and world files before updating, especially if you have been running mods.

Post-launch, Iron Gate has committed to bug fixes and quality-of-life work but has not confirmed further content on the scale of a new biome. With the Deep North in place and the Ocean untouched, 1.0 is the finished version of the map the studio drew five years ago.
