Ancient Bark is the wood that gates most of Valheim’s iron-tier gear. It does not come from the ordinary trees you hack down in the Meadows or the Black Forest, and you cannot buy it. It comes from one place, from one type of tree, and only if you are carrying the right axe.
Quick answer: Chop down Ancient Trees in the Swamp biome with a Bronze Axe or better, then break the fallen log into pieces to collect Ancient Bark and Wood.
Bronze Axe requirement for chopping Ancient Trees
A Stone Axe will not touch an Ancient Tree. You need a Bronze Axe at minimum, and any higher-tier axe works as well. The Bronze Axe is built at the Forge from 8 Wood, 8 Bronze, and 2 Leather Scraps, with Bronze itself smelted from 2 Copper and 1 Tin. A fresh Bronze Axe carries 150 durability and 40 chop damage, which is what actually matters against these trees.

Bring a spare axe or repair materials. Ancient Trees eat durability fast, and a broken axe in the middle of a Swamp is a long walk home.

Ancient Trees grow only in the Swamp biome, often standing in shallow water. Swamp borders are easy to spot on the map because the biome name changes when you cross into it, so a Swamp sitting next to your Meadows base is the cheapest farming trip you will get.
World generation is random, so there is no fixed coordinate for them. Scout Swamp edges by land or boat until you see the tall, dark trunks. Not every tree in the Swamp can be felled — the small ragged firs give plain Wood, and only the Ancient Trees drop bark.
Go in prepared. The Swamp is a midgame biome with poison-heavy enemies, and a farming run tends to attract company:
- A full upgraded Iron or Wolf armor set
- Poison resistance mead for Blobs and Draugr
- A decent bow with fire or flint arrows to thin enemies at range
- Clear the area first, harvest, then clear again when spawns return
How to harvest Ancient Bark

How to confirm it worked
The first piece you pick up triggers a New material banner followed by a New crafting recipe notification for the Root Harness, Root Leggings, and Root Mask. Open your inventory and the item description reads “An ancient and sturdy material,” with a weight of 2.0 per unit. If you see those recipe unlocks, the harvest registered.

Faster ways to stock up on Ancient Bark
Sunken Crypt and Swamp ruin chests
Once you have beaten The Elder and picked up the Swamp Key, Sunken Crypts open up. Chests inside can hold stacks of Ancient Bark in the range of 20 to 30, which beats a long chopping session. Surface chests at Swamp ruins and graves roll similar stacks. The same crypt chests also hold scrap iron, withered bones, poison arrows, and coins, so they are worth opening regardless.
Let an Abomination do the chopping
An Abomination’s stomping attack knocks down Ancient Trees in its path. Bait one near a cluster, survive the fight, and you are left with a pile of logs ready to break apart without spending axe durability on the felling stage.
Console command
If you play with cheats enabled, the internal ID is ElderBark. Turn on the console option in gameplay settings, press F5, type devcommands, then spawn what you need.

Ancient Bark crafting costs
Ancient Bark stacks to 50 and is teleportable, so unlike ore you can portal it straight home. Here is what it feeds into and how much each upgrade level adds on top.
| Item | Ancient Bark | Per upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient bark spear | 10 | +5 |
| Battleaxe | 30 | +5 |
| Crystal battleaxe | 40 | +5 |
| Draugr Fang bow | 10 | +5 |
| Fang spear | 10 | +5 |
| Frostner | 10 | +0 |
| Iron Brooch | 5 | +0 |
| Iron buckler | 4 | +1 |
| Iron sledge | 10 | +2 |
| Root harnesk | 10 | +5 |
| Root leggings | 10 | +5 |
| Root mask | 10 | +5 |
The Swamp-tier weapons and the Root armor set are made at the Forge, while the Mountain-tier gear — Frostner, Draugr Fang, Fang spear, Crystal battleaxe — needs a Forge upgraded further. Fully upgrading a Draugr Fang alone runs to 40 bark, so budget for more than the base recipe suggests.
Building with Ancient Bark
Outside of gear, it goes into a handful of structures and both midgame boats.
- Bonfire — 5 Ancient Bark
- Butcher’s Table — 2 Ancient Bark
- Karve and Longship, the larger sailing vessels
Ancient Bark cannot be fed into a Charcoal kiln. If you want to burn a surplus, the Obliterator converts 5 Ancient Bark into 1 Coal — but it only accepts one wood type per batch, so do not mix partial stacks.
Once you have a Bronze Axe and a Swamp on the map, Ancient Bark stops being a bottleneck and becomes a routine supply run. Fell, break the log, portal the stack home, repeat until you have enough for the Root set and whatever iron weapon you are building next.
