Bronze is the first alloy in Valheim, and it is the only material in the game made by mixing two other metals. You cannot mine it, loot it from a boss, or dig it out of the ground in the Black Forest. You have to build a small production chain first, and every piece of that chain depends on one item you drag out of a burial crypt.
Quick answer: Smelt copper ore and tin ore into bars in a Smelter, then put 2 Copper and 1 Tin into a Forge to craft 1 Bronze. The Forge must sit indoors under a roof or it will not work.
Bronze recipe and everything it needs
Before you mine anything, check this list against your base. Missing one station stops the whole process.

Get Surtling cores first to unlock the Smelter and Charcoal kiln
Neither smelting station appears in your build menu until you pick up a Surtling core. The easiest supply is the burial crypts scattered across the Black Forest, where cores sit on stands and on the floor inside the chambers. Skeletons live in those rooms, so bring a shield and a weapon you trust.
Surtlings themselves also drop cores, but farming them means fighting waves of fire creatures. Crypt looting is far calmer, and one good crypt run usually covers both stations at once. Haul back plenty of stone and wood while you are out there, since both are needed for the builds.
Note: the Charcoal kiln and Smelter are placed from the build menu while you are standing near a Workbench.
Where to mine copper ore and tin ore
Both metals live in the Black Forest, but they look nothing alike and sit in different spots. You need a pickaxe for either one, and Greydwarves will interrupt you constantly while you dig.

Copper deposits keep going below the surface, so dig around and under the visible rock until the whole vein crumbles. Small chunks scatter as it breaks, and it is easy to walk away leaving a dozen ore on the ground.

How to confirm it worked
A Bronze bar lands in your inventory, and the Forge crafting list immediately grows. Bronze weapons, armor and tools that were hidden before now show up as recipes, including the Bronze Sword, Bronze Spear, Bronze Buckler, Bronze Helmet, Bronze Plate Leggings and Bronzehead Arrow. If those entries appeared, the whole chain is working.
If nothing crafts, the cause is almost always one of these:
- The Forge has no roof above it, so it is inactive.
- You are holding raw copper ore and tin ore instead of smelted bars. Only bars go into the Forge.
- The Smelter has ore but no coal, so nothing is being processed.
- You have tin but not two copper per craft, or the reverse. The ratio is fixed at 2:1.
Metal cannot go through portals
Copper ore, tin ore and finished Bronze all block portal travel, so every load has to be carried or sailed home. The ore is heavy, which makes the walk back slow and dangerous.
Two things fix this. Build a small outpost with the kiln, Smelter and Forge right on the edge of the Black Forest so the trip is short. And spend early bronze on Bronze Nails for a cart, which lets you drag much larger hauls at once. A strength belt bought from the merchant helps as well.

Plan your mining around the total, not the individual recipe. One of every base Black Forest bronze item costs 78 Bronze, and fully upgrading that set pushes the requirement to 300. The Bronze Pickaxe is the single most useful first purchase, since it opens up harder ore later.
Other ways to obtain bronze
Later biomes hand out bronze without any smelting. Standing braziers inside Frost Caves in the Mountain drop it when destroyed, and Ancient pots in Ashlands ruins and Putrid Holes do the same. Scrap bronze, an uncommon Ashlands material, can also be melted straight down in a Smelter.
None of that helps during your first Black Forest run, though. For the Bronze Age itself, the Forge chain is the only route, and the alloy is what carries you into the fight against The Elder.
