Feathers are the bottleneck material for almost every arrow and bolt in Valheim, and they come from exactly one reliable place: dead birds. Seagulls and crows each drop three feathers per kill, which sounds generous until you realize a single crafting batch of Flinthead Arrows eats two of them. The trick is not marksmanship. It is weather.
Quick answer: Wait for rain, run the Meadows coastline with a bow and Wood Arrows equipped, and shoot the seagulls that land on the shore. Each kill drops three feathers.
Why rain is the best time to farm feathers
Birds in Valheim spend most of their time circling in the air, where hitting them with an arrow is a waste of ammunition. During a rainstorm, seagulls come down and stay grounded. That single behavior change is what turns feather farming from a frustrating chore into a five-minute loop.
You do not need to prepare anything special. When the sky opens up and your character picks up the Wet status, grab a bow and head for the nearest shoreline. Seagulls cluster along coasts, and the Meadows shore gives you the clearest sightlines because there are few trees blocking your view.

Any bow works. What matters more is your ammunition choice, because using feather-crafted arrows to hunt feathers is a losing trade if you miss. Wood Arrows cost 8 wood for a stack of 20 and require no feathers at all, which makes them the correct pick for this job.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Any bow | Ranged kills avoid spooking the bird before you land a hit |
| Wood Arrows | No feathers in the recipe, so missed shots cost nothing but wood |
| Rainy weather | Grounds seagulls so they stop circling out of reach |
| Meadows coastline | Open ground and a high seagull population |
Note: feathers weigh 0.1 each and stack to 50, so a long hunting run barely touches your carry capacity. They also pass through portals without issue.
Hunting grounded seagulls on the coast

Birds that fly off are not lost. They circle for a while and land again, so a single stretch of beach can be farmed repeatedly on one storm. Crows work the same way and drop the same three feathers, but they are black and live mainly in the Black Forest, which makes them harder to spot.

Every source of feathers, ranked by yield
Hunting is the only method that scales. The rest are incidental drops you should collect but never rely on.
| Source | Yield | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Seagull | 3 per kill | Guaranteed drop; found along coasts |
| Crow | 3 per kill | Guaranteed drop; mostly Black Forest |
| Volture | 1–2 per kill | Guaranteed drop; higher-level enemy |
| Beech and fir trees | Random | Occasional drop while chopping wood |
| Chests | Random | Meadows, Black Forest, and Burial Chamber chests |
Hens, chickens, and ash crows also drop feathers, and world loot settings can raise the quantity above the standard three per bird.
How many feathers you need to stockpile
Nearly every arrow and bolt in the game costs 2 feathers per batch, from Flinthead and Fire Arrows in the Meadows all the way to Charred Bolts in the Ashlands. That flat cost means the demand never really goes away, it just follows you into later biomes.
| Craft | Feathers required |
|---|---|
| Most arrows and bolts | 2 |
| Huntsman Bow (Deer Hide and Iron recipe) | 2 |
| Feather Cape | 10 |
| Eitr-weave Robe | 10 |
| Dragon Bed | 10 |
| Mead Base: Lightfoot | 5 |
A single 50-stack covers a very long stretch of arrow crafting, so one productive storm is usually enough to keep you supplied through a full biome.
Why the hunt fails and how to fix it
Two mistakes account for nearly every wasted trip. The first is shooting at birds in the air, which burns arrows for almost no return. The second is walking straight at a landed bird instead of stopping at range, which sends it back into the sky before you can draw.
- No birds on the ground: the weather is clear. Wait for rain, or push further along the coast.
- Arrows falling short: hold the draw longer and raise your aim above the target.
- The bird keeps fleeing: crouch and approach slowly instead of sprinting into range.
- Nothing dropped: check the ground where the bird was standing, since the drop lands at the point of the kill.
One warning worth repeating: Hugin, the raven who delivers tutorial hints, is not a valid target. Shooting him does not produce feathers.
Once you have a base near the coast, feather farming stops being a dedicated activity. Storms roll in on their own schedule, and structures tend to attract birds that settle nearby. Keep a bow and a stack of Wood Arrows in a chest by the door, and every rainstorm becomes a few minutes of easy restocking.
