Valheim: Where to Find Leeches in the Swamp Biome

Leeches are the Swamp’s water tax. They sit submerged in the standing pools that cover most of the biome, they cannot follow you onto dry ground, and every single one of them drops a Bloodbag when it dies. That one material gates Frost Resistance Mead, Medium Healing Mead, Blood Pudding, and the Red Banner, which makes clearing them out an early Swamp priority rather than an optional detour.

Quick answer: Head to any Swamp biome and look at the standing water. Leeches spawn anywhere the swamp holds water, day or night, with up to 10 active at once, and each kill drops at least one Bloodbag.

Leech spawn locations in the Swamp

There is no special pond, ruin, or dungeon to hunt for. Leeches use the water itself as their spawn surface, so shallow flooded ground, deep pools around submerged roots, and the wide flat water between trees all count. Since the Swamp is mostly water, you rarely have to walk far.

They are active both day and night, they never leave the water, and the biome caps them at 10 at a time in the area. The Swamp is normally the third biome you visit after the Meadows and the Black Forest, so you will meet your first Leech around the same time you start pulling Scrap Iron out of Sunken Crypts.

How to spot a Leech before it bites

Swamp water is dark and the Leech body sits just under the surface, so you usually see the signs before the creature. Circular ripples on otherwise still water mean something is moving down there. The more reliable tell is the floating name plate and health bar that pops up once a Leech is within your view distance, which is often the only readable marker in a night-time swamp.

Star levels are colour coded, but the darkness works against you. Regular Leeches are black and red, one-star Leeches are bright green, and two-star Leeches are purple and magenta. At distance those colours blur together, so put your targeting reticle on one at closer range to read its actual rank before you commit.

Leech stats, star tiers, and drops

TierHealthBite damageBloodbags
0★ (black/red)6020 pierce + 70 poison1
1★ (green)12030 pierce + 105 poison2
2★ (purple/magenta)18040 pierce + 140 poison4

The Bloodbag drop is guaranteed at every tier. The Leech Trophy sits at roughly 10 percent regardless of stars, so trophy hunting is purely a numbers game. The bite is their only attack, it reaches about 1.5 meters in a narrow arc, and it can fire every two seconds while you stay in range.

Damage typing matters more than raw weapon tier here. Blunt, slash, pierce, frost, and lightning all land at full value. Poison is resisted, and fire and spirit do nothing at all, so fire arrows are a waste. They also ignore stagger, chop, and pickaxe damage, which rules out knocking them around with an axe swing.

How to kill Leeches from dry land

Stay out of the water. Leeches cannot move onto land, so a shoreline, a raised patch of ground, or a fallen trunk turns the fight completely one-sided. Never wade across a pool when you can walk around it.
Drink a Poison Resistance Mead before you start, especially if you are also mining iron or fighting Draugr nearby. Leech poison stacks fast, and a group of three or four can kill you outright while you are stuck at reduced stamina in the water.
Shoot them with a bow from shore. Any bow works against a 60 health Leech, though a Huntsman Bow or Draugr Fang clears the tougher star variants far faster. Pull one at a time so you are not aggroing the rest of the pool.

Step in, grab the Bloodbags, and get out before the next group drifts over. If a spot keeps refilling, build a small wooden platform over the water high enough that a rising Leech cannot reach you but close enough to draw them in.

Tip: if you already have an Abyssal Harpoon from an Ocean Leviathan run, you can drag Leeches out of the water and finish them on land. It is slower than a bow but it costs no arrows and works solo.

What Bloodbags are used for

RecipeStationCost
Mead Base: Frost ResistanceCauldron10 Honey, 5 Thistle, 2 Bloodbag, 1 Greydwarf Eye
Mead Base: Medium HealingCauldron10 Honey, 10 Raspberries, 4 Bloodbag, 1 Dandelion
Blood PuddingCauldron4 Barley Flour, 2 Bloodbag, 2 Thistle
Black SoupCauldron1 Bloodbag, 1 Honey, 1 Turnip
Swamp Dweller’s DelightFood Preparation Table8 Sausages, 4 Bloodbag, 2 Turnip Stew, 1 Woodland Herb Blend
Red BannerWorkbench1 Bloodbag, 2 Finewood, 6 Leather Scraps

Each Bloodbag weighs 0.5 and stacks to 50, and it passes through portals, so there is no reason to leave a haul sitting in a Swamp chest. Frost Resistance Mead is the one most players come for, since it is what keeps you alive in the Mountains without a full Wolf Armor set.

How to confirm the farm worked

Two things tell you the run landed. Bloodbag appears in your inventory with the description “The contents of a leech. Ick!”, and the very first one you pick up unlocks the Red Banner in your Workbench build menu. If the banner is still missing from the build list, you have not actually looted a Bloodbag yet, only killed the Leech.

The most common reason people come back empty handed is that the drop sank. Bloodbags land where the Leech died, which is usually in the water, so swing your camera down and look for the item glow before you retreat. On a private world with devcommands enabled you can also spawn one directly for testing, where the third number sets the star level.

Treat every Swamp pool as occupied and the biome stops being a poison gauntlet. Keep to solid ground, thin them out with arrows before you mine or loot near water, and the Bloodbags you need for the Mountains will pile up on their own.
