Valheim: How to Get Ooze in the Swamp Biome

Ooze is one of those Valheim materials you stop thinking about until a recipe suddenly demands ten of it. It only comes from the Swamp, it only comes off two enemies, and both of them will poison you for twenty seconds if you get sloppy about the approach.

Quick answer: Kill Blobs or Oozers in the Swamp biome. Both drop Ooze at a 100 percent rate — 1 to 4 per Blob and 2 to 8 per Oozer, depending on star level.

Blob and Oozer drop rates for Ooze

There is no random roll here. Every Blob and every Oozer drops Ooze when killed, and the only variable is how many stars the enemy has. Higher-level spawns are worth going out of your way for, since a two-star Oozer alone hands over eight Ooze.

Oozers also have a chance at Scrap Iron on top of the Ooze, and that chance climbs with star level until it becomes guaranteed at level 3. Nothing else in the Swamp drops Ooze, so Draugr, Skeletons, Leeches and Wraiths are all a waste of arrows if Ooze is what you came for.

How to find Blobs in the Swamp biome

Locate a Swamp on your map. Swamps are the dark, waterlogged patches with dead trees, and they vary wildly in size — some worlds bury them behind a long boat trip, and small patches can be easy to sail straight past.

Walk the biome and watch for green, glowing slimes on the ground. Blobs bob and drift slowly, and their glow gives them away in the Swamp’s permanent gloom well before they notice you.

Clear out Sunken Crypts if you want a denser hunting ground. Blobs spawn inside them as well as out in the open biome, though you need the Swamp Key from The Elder to open the doors.

The Bonemass fight is the other reliable concentration of them. The boss repeatedly summons Blobs and Skeletons during the encounter, which makes it a steady Ooze source if you are already geared enough to survive it.

How to kill Blobs and Oozers without getting poisoned

Both enemies attack by dumping a poison cloud around themselves rather than swinging at you, and that poison ticks for roughly twenty seconds once it lands. Poison Resistance Mead is the difference between an annoying farm and a corpse run.

Oozers are the elite version, with 150 health and a large poison area of effect. They are weak to blunt and lightning damage and resistant to pierce and slash, so a mace or sledge does far more work than a sword or spear. Arrows are still the safest option despite the pierce resistance, simply because you never enter the cloud.

The catch with Oozers is what happens after they die. A zero-star Oozer bursts into two Blobs, a one-star into four, and a two-star into eight, and those Blobs can be on top of you the instant the parent dies. Kill them at range, or back off immediately after the final hit.

Note: Skeletons and Draugr patrol the same ground and will happily interrupt a fight you thought was under control. Clear the area around a Blob before you engage it.

Confirming the Ooze pickup and inventory limits

Ooze drops on the ground as loot, and picking it up prints a confirmation in the corner of the screen — killing a two-star Blob, for example, shows “Added Ooze x4”. If no message appears, the drop is still lying in the mud where the enemy died.

Because Ooze is teleportable, you can portal it straight home instead of hauling it back by boat — a real advantage over the iron you are probably also carrying out of the Swamp.

What Ooze is used for in Valheim

Three recipes call for it, and two of them turn the material back into poison damage. The in-game description sums up its reputation nicely: Rotten and putrid-smelling. Why do you want this?

The Ooze bomb is a thrown weapon that leaves a poison cloud with a four-meter radius for ten seconds. Anyone caught inside it, other than the thrower, takes 40 poison damage over seven seconds, and standing in the cloud refreshes that damage for a theoretical maximum of 97. Player skill does not change the number, though enemy resistance can.

Poison arrows are worth banking Ooze for, since poison suppresses enemy healing and some bosses take more damage from them than from fire arrows.

The matching enemy code is BlobElite for an Oozer, which is useful if you would rather practice the fight than farm it.

Ooze is cheap to gather once you are comfortable in the Swamp, and the drop is guaranteed, so a single crypt run with a mace and a poison resistance mead usually covers a full stack of Ooze bombs. Bank fifty of it before you go looking for Bonemass — poison arrows are a lot easier to make when you already have the ugly part sitting in a chest.
