Deeprun Rat Roundup is one of only two quests tucked inside the Deeprun Tram, and it exists mostly as something to do while you wait for the next tram car. It is Alliance-only, it can be completed once per character, and the whole thing takes a couple of minutes once you understand how the flute actually works.
Quick answer: Take the flute from Monty inside the Deeprun Tram, left-click a Deeprun Rat, then use the flute while the rat is standing still or walking toward you. Repeat until Rats Captured reads 5/5.
Deeprun Rat Roundup quest details
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Faction | Alliance |
| Start and end | Monty, Rat Extermination Specialist |
| Location | Deeprun Tram depot, Ironforge side |
| Required level (Classic) | 10 |
| Objective | Rats Captured (5) |
| Quest item | Rat Catcher’s Flute (provided) |
| Follow-up | Me Brother, Nipsy |
In Classic the turn-in pays 910 experience, rising to 1,260 experience in Season of Mastery. In the modern game the reward scales with your level and lands somewhere between roughly 90 and 900 experience, so it is worth grabbing early rather than at 60-plus. The quest is not sharable, and the rats only exist near the Deeprun Tram depot, nowhere else in the world.
Some Classic quest-tracking add-ons point you at Stormwind for this one. Monty stands on the Ironforge end of the tram, so start there.

The flute is a charm effect with a short cast time and a short range, and almost every failure comes down to one of those two limits. Learn the rules below and the objective stops being fiddly.
- Left-click a Deeprun Rat to target it. Right-clicking attacks it, and a dead rat gives no credit.
- Stand next to the rat. The flute has limited range and reports an invalid target from too far away.
- Play it on a stopped rat or one walking toward you. A rat that runs out of range mid-cast breaks the charm.
- Rats another player has already charmed cannot be counted. They clear themselves after a few minutes or when you leave the tram.
- The flute does nothing outside the Deeprun Tram, and it must still be in your bags when you hand the quest in.
Credit is banked as you go rather than counted at the turn-in. You do not need five rats trailing behind you when you talk to Monty, and charming more than five gives you nothing extra. If you stop partway through, your progress stays on the counter until you come back.

Hunters and warlocks should dismiss their pet or set it to passive. A pet that kills the rat between the flute finishing and the charm landing makes the capture look like it failed.
Capturing all five Deeprun Rats

Use a macro to speed up targeting
Clicking small, fast-moving critters is the hardest part of the quest, so a one-button macro removes the problem entirely. Open the macro window with /m, create a new macro, paste the lines below, and drop it on your action bar.
#showtooltip Rat Catcher's Flute
/target Deeprun Rat
/cast Rat Catcher's Flute
Run along the tram and press it whenever you are beside a rat. It picks the nearest valid target and plays the flute in one press, which matters because the charm still needs the rat to stay inside range for the full cast.

Turning in the quest and confirming it worked
The moment the fifth rat is charmed, the objective flips to 5/5 and a Quest Complete notification appears. Walk back across the platform to Monty, hand the quest in, and you will see the experience award land along with the flute leaving your bags.
Ignore the quest tracker if it tells you Monty is at Lordamere Internment Camp in the Alterac Mountains. That is a coordinate error in the quest’s turn-in data, and Monty never moves from the Deeprun Tram.
Completing it unlocks the second and final tram quest, Me Brother, Nipsy, which pays 5 silver and a stack of 10 Deeprun Rat Kebabs. Between the two you get a short, self-contained chain that fits neatly into the wait for the next tram car.
