World of Warcraft: How to Get to Stormwind From Darnassus

The portal and boat route between the two Alliance capitals, plus the longer overland trek and the shortcuts that skip it.

The portal and boat route between the two Alliance capitals, plus the longer overland trek and the shortcuts that skip it.

Darnassus sits at the top of Teldrassil, an island off the coast of Kalimdor, while Stormwind is on the opposite continent in the Eastern Kingdoms. There is no flight path that crosses that gap directly, so the trip always starts the same way: a portal out of the city, then a sea crossing.

Quick answer: Step into the glowing pink tree portal in Darnassus to reach Rut’theran Village, follow the path down to the docks, and board the southern boat to Stormwind Harbor.

Where the Darnassus portal is located

At Darnassus’s east side, look behind the Temple of Gardens for the exit portal. You can also use the bank as a landmark—the large, hollow, cat-shaped tree—and check the structure immediately west of it. The portal appears as a misty pink canopy beneath a tree, with Darnassus Sentinels standing on either side.

Press M at any point to open the city map and check your position against the terraces. Darnassus is laid out as a ring of districts, so the Cenarion Enclave, Craftsmen’s Terrace, Warrior’s Terrace, Tradesmen’s Terrace and the Temple of the Moon all make useful reference points.

Portal to Rut’theran Village, then the boat to Stormwind Harbor

Run east through the city until you reach the tree portal guarded by the Sentinels. You do not need to click anything — the portal triggers on contact.

Walk under the canopy. A loading screen plays and you arrive in Rut’theran Village, the night elf port at the base of Teldrassil.
Head straight forward from the portal and follow the path down to the wooden docks. The flight master here is worth a quick stop before you board anything.
Board the southern boat. If no ship is tied up, wait on the pier — the boats run on a fixed loop and one will arrive shortly.

Stay on deck until the ship docks and the zone text reads Stormwind City. Walk off the gangplank into Stormwind Harbor and you are in the city.

Do not jump off the boat mid-voyage. If you fall into the water you have to swim back to shore and wait for the next ship.

Which dock to use at Rut’theran Village

The village has three piers, and only one of them puts you in the Eastern Kingdoms. Boarding the wrong ship costs you a full round trip.

On some routes the crossing is split in two rather than run straight through. The first ship drops you at the Darkshore docks, where you walk off the pier to the adjacent slip and board a second ship bound for Stormwind. If you land in Darkshore instead of Stormwind, that transfer is the step you are missing — do not run inland, just change docks.

The level 10 requirement on the Rut’theran portal

Ask a guard in Darnassus for directions to the Eastern Kingdoms and they point you to the docks, where a portal to Stormwind sits alongside the ships. That portal carries a level 10 requirement, which catches out characters who have barely started Teldrassil.

There is a way around it that has no level gate. Take the portal to the Exodar from the Temple of the Moon in Darnassus, then take the Exodar’s portal to Stormwind. Two hops instead of one, and both work at any level.

The Classic route: two boats and an overland run to Ironforge

In World of Warcraft Classic there is no direct sailing from night elf territory to Stormwind. The sea route ends in the Wetlands, and the rest of the journey is on foot through zones far above the level of anyone making this trip early.

Take the tree portal in Darnassus down to Rut’theran Village and head for the docks.

Sail to Auberdine in Darkshore. A gryphon from Rut’theran Village will also get you there if you already have the flight path.
At the Auberdine docks, cross the pier to the opposite platform and wait for the ship to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands. Board it and ride across.
Disembark at Menethil Harbor and speak to the gryphon master on the way past the docks to pick up the flight path. From here the run begins.
Follow the main road east through the Wetlands, past Black Channel Marsh, Thelgen Rock and Angerfang Encampment, until you reach the gates of Dun Algaz.

Work through the Dun Algaz tunnels into Loch Modan, then take the North Gate Pass tunnel straight through into Dun Morogh.
Follow the snowy road past Amberstill Ranch to Ironforge. Grab the flight path from the gryphon master inside, then head right through Tinker Town to the Deeprun Tram entrance.
Board the tram. It runs for free and deposits you in the Dwarven District of Stormwind City, which is the end of the trip.

The Wetlands stretch is full of high-level mobs and dying there is close to unavoidable below level 25. Strip your gear off before the run to avoid repair bills, dodge fights rather than taking them, and stay well away from skull-level enemies.

Skipping the Wetlands with the Stuck Character Service

The overland leg can be bypassed entirely using the in-game unstuck tool, which relocates your character to the nearest graveyard-style safe point. Done from the right spot at Menethil Harbor, that point is outside the Gates of Ironforge.

After arriving at Menethil Harbor, run back down the dock and swim out along the coast to roughly /way 3.30 75.87.
Open the menu, choose Customer Support, select Stuck Character Service and press Continue.

Pick your character from the list and click Move Character. You will be disconnected, with the login screen showing error WOW51900319.
Log in again, and you will appear in Dun Morogh beyond the Gates of Ironforge, bypassing the entire Wetlands trek.
Enter Ironforge, run through Tinker Town to the Deeprun Tram, ride it across and exit into the Dwarven District of Stormwind.

The service has a cooldown between uses, so you may have to wait at the login screen before the relocation goes through.

Faster options if you have help

Teleportation beats every travel route if someone is willing to help. All three of these skip the sea crossing completely.

  • A mage can open a portal straight to Stormwind or Ironforge. Historically the spell needed a Rune of Portals reagent costing 20 silver, so offering a tip is customary.
  • A warlock can summon you with a Ritual of Summoning, which needs two other players to assist.
  • Characters above level 15 can be summoned through the meeting stone at the Stormwind Stockade entrance.

Using a portal at a very low level is a common way to reach the Eastern Kingdoms early and pick up weapon and trade skill training before you would normally get there.

Flight paths and hearthstone points to collect on the way

Making this trip once is tedious. Making it twice because you skipped the flight masters is worse. Pick up every node you pass.

  • Kalimdor: Rut’theran Village and Lor’danel.
  • Eastern Kingdoms: Menethil Harbor, plus Stormwind or Ironforge, whichever you land in first.
  • Both capitals: ride the Deeprun Tram between Stormwind’s Dwarven District and Ironforge to register the second flight master.
  • Return trip: your hearthstone. Druids can set theirs in the Eastern Kingdoms and use Teleport: Moonglade to get back to Kalimdor, which is useful when questing on both continents.

The Dark Portal route at level 58 and above

From level 58 onward there is a third way out of Darnassus that reaches Stormwind from any capital. Take the portal to the Blasted Lands, which in Darnassus is located in the Temple of the Moon, then step through the Dark Portal. At the bottom of the Stair of Destiny on the other side sits a small portal back to Stormwind.

Whichever route you take, the confirmation is the same: the zone text changes to Stormwind City and the interface marks the area as Alliance territory. Set your hearthstone at an inn in the city if you plan to stay, and grab the flight path before you head anywhere else.
