World of Warcraft: How to Get to Ironforge From Stormwind (Deeprun Tram)

The free underground rail line between the two Alliance capitals takes 60 seconds, with no level or gold requirement.

The free underground rail line between the two Alliance capitals takes 60 seconds, with no level or gold requirement.

Stormwind City and Ironforge are separated by a large stretch of the Eastern Kingdoms, yet a gnome-engineered railway beneath the ground links them without an overland journey. Called the Deeprun Tram, it operates in a sealed zone, charges no fare, and delivers riders within the destination city rather than at its edge.

Quick answer: Go to the Dwarven District in northeast Stormwind, run through the tunnel into the Deeprun Tram portal, board a carriage at the platform, and ride 60 seconds to Tinker Town.

Deeprun Tram: cost, entrances, and travel time

Sealed from the outside, the tram uses double tracks and two wagon sets that travel in opposing directions, ensuring a carriage regularly arrives for you. Midway along the route, the line crosses an underground lake; the glass-sided section is the underwater portion visible during the trip.

Because the tram is contested rather than Alliance-guarded, Horde players can ride it too — they just have a much harder time reaching either station. The line works the same way in Classic and in the modern game.

Stormwind to Ironforge: the full tram route

Open your city map while standing in Stormwind and find the Dwarven District in the northeast corner. It is the smoky, industrial quarter, and the tram tunnel is marked on the map itself.
Run to the northeast end of the district and look for the large circular metal entrance built into the wall. The cogwork framing around the opening makes it hard to mistake for a normal building.

Mount up if you can and ride straight into the tunnel. Mounts are allowed the whole way down, and the corridor runs in a single direction with no side paths to get lost in.

Continue down the metal passage to its far end, where a swirling portal waits, then enter it directly. A brief loading screen follows, as the Deeprun Tram occupies a separate zone instead of being part of the city.

Descend the station ramp and reach the platform alongside the rails. If the platform is empty, remain there until a carriage arrives; two trams circulate, so one comes by every few minutes.

When the tram stops, step onto the carriage floor. There is nothing to click and no NPC to talk to — standing on the tram is enough, and it departs on its own after a 12-second stop.

The crossing takes 60 seconds. Because the trip has no loading screen, you retain complete control and may move around inside the carriage as it travels beneath the lake and through the glass tube.

Once the carriage reaches the opposite station, leave it on the platform and follow the exit passage upward to the portal. Entering the portal causes another loading screen, then deposits you in Tinker Town, Ironforge.

A fall onto the rails will not kill you. The tram safely passes above your character, and either station provides a ramp for returning to the platform.

How to confirm you arrived in Ironforge

The exit portal is followed by a zone banner identifying the City of Ironforge and Tinker Town. Opening the map changes its view from the tram’s layout to Ironforge, with your marker in Tinker Town on the city’s eastern side. Leaving the tunnel brings you to gnome-built machinery and Gnomeregan Evacuee NPCs, providing another obvious confirmation that you reached the correct district.

From there, the rest of Ironforge runs west — the Military Ward, then the Great Forge at the center, with the flight master, bank and auction house all clustered nearby.

On the world map, Ironforge lies north of Stormwind; inside the zone, however, the tunnel seems to travel from east to west. This unusual orientation comes from the instance layout and does not mean you chose the wrong carriage.

Ironforge to Stormwind: riding the tram back

The return trip is the same line in reverse, and it is just as free.

Leave the Great Forge heading east, pass through the Military Ward, and enter the mechanical passage toward Tinker Town along Ironforge’s eastern map edge.
Continue east through Tinker Town to the large tunnel with the swirling portal at its end, and walk into it to load the tram zone.
Head down the ramp to the platform, board the carriage heading the other way, and wait out the 60-second ride.
At the opposite station, leave the tram, follow the corridor upward, and enter the portal. Its zone banner identifies Stormwind City as Alliance Territory and names the Dwarven District; the map then changes to Stormwind’s layout, placing your marker in that district.

Tram vs. flight path, portals, and Hearthstone

  • Deeprun Tram: it is free and available at all times, though you must board it and get off yourself at each endpoint.
  • Gryphon flight path: slower, but better if you want to step away from the keyboard, since the flight needs no input.
  • Mage portal: travel is immediate, provided a mage agrees to create one for you.
  • Hearthstone: it works immediately when it is already bound to your desired city, after which it enters cooldown.

For a character of any level with no gold and no friendly mage on speed dial, the tram is the reliable option in both directions — roughly two minutes door to door once you know where the tunnels are, and there is no fare, no reputation gate, and nothing to unlock first.
