WoW Classic: Rear Guard Patrol Quest Guide (Balnir Farmstead)

Where to find the 8 Bleeding Horrors and 8 Wandering Spirits, plus the rare that can end a low-level run.

Where to find the 8 Bleeding Horrors and 8 Wandering Spirits, plus the rare that can end a low-level run.

Rear Guard Patrol is one of the longer kill quests in Tirisfal Glades, and it sends undead characters east of Brill into the overrun fields of the Balnir Farmstead. It is a Horde quest handed out by Deathguard Linnea at her roadside camp, and it asks for two separate kill counts rather than one, which is why it takes longer than most quests at this level.

Quick answer: Take Rear Guard Patrol from Deathguard Linnea, kill 8 Bleeding Horrors and 8 Wandering Spirits at Balnir Farmstead near 75, 60 in Tirisfal Glades, then return to Linnea.

Completion pays out a small coin reward, reputation with the Undercity, and a solid chunk of experience for the level range. The experience value depends on which version you are playing: the original Classic reward is 660 experience, while Season of Mastery pays 915. Linnea’s closing line mentions sending a commendation to her superior, Executor Zygand.

Because the quest is sharable and only requires level 6, you can pass it to a group member who has not picked it up from Linnea yet.

Balnir Farmstead location and coordinates

Every target for this quest sits in one place. The Balnir Farmstead lies east of Brill and slightly northeast of the Undercity, along the road that runs toward the Bulwark. The usable coordinate range is roughly 75, 60 through 77, 62, covering the plowed fields, the fence line, and the buildings in the middle.

Both mob types wander the same ground, so there is no need to split the run into two trips. Bleeding Horrors are the lower-level of the pair, sitting around level 9, while Wandering Spirits are usually level 11.

How to clear the 16 kills

Speak to Deathguard Linnea at her camp on the road north of the Undercity and accept Rear Guard Patrol. The quest tracker will show two separate counters, each set to 0/8.
Follow the road east from Brill until the farm fields open up on your right. Enter through the crop rows rather than the buildings, since the mobs spread out across the tilled ground and are easier to pull one at a time there.
Start with the Bleeding Horrors in the open field. They are the weaker target and give you room to work through the count before the tougher spirits become a problem.

Move toward the fence line and the farmstead ruins for the Wandering Spirits. They patrol in loops around the buildings and along the wooden fencing, so wait for one to separate from the group before you open.

Keep an eye on the tracker as you alternate between the two types. Because both spawn across the same fields, the counters tend to climb together rather than one at a time, and you can finish either objective first without backtracking.

If the field runs dry, sweep the dirt road and the cemetery area on the far side of the farm. Stragglers from both groups drift out that way, which is usually where the last few kills come from.

A level 12 rare named Fellicent’s Shade patrols the inside perimeter of the farm fence. She hits far harder than the regular mobs, and pulling her by accident at level 10 or 11 will usually kill you.

Turn in the quest and confirm completion

Once both counters read 8/8, an “Objective Complete” message appears for each. Head back west along the road toward the Undercity and hand the quest in to Deathguard Linnea at the same camp where you picked it up. The gold exclamation mark on her turns into the standard turn-in marker once the kills are done.

If you are not sure whether a character already finished it on a previous run, you can check the quest flag directly in chat. Quest ID 356 is the one you want.

/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(356))

A return of true means the quest is already recorded as complete on that character.

Availability outside Classic

Rear Guard Patrol only exists in the Classic line of clients. Blizzard removed it from the modern game in patch 4.0.3a, when Cataclysm rewrote Tirisfal Glades, and the quest is now flagged obsolete there, which means it cannot be picked up or completed. Cataclysm did leave behind an internally reworked version of the text that sends players west from the Bulwark instead of east, but that variant never went live as an obtainable quest.
