Why GTA 6’s $100 Ultimate Edition Is Outselling the $80 Standard Edition

Take-Two's CEO says the pricier tier is leading pre-orders, but a quirk in how store charts count sales complicates the picture.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches with two versions, an $80 Standard Edition and a $100 Ultimate Edition, and early demand is skewing toward the more expensive one. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed in a CNBC interview that more people are pre-ordering the Ultimate Edition than the Standard Edition, calling it a possible sign of “the most avid consumers pre-ordering the game.”

Quick answer: The $100 Ultimate Edition is currently pre-ordering ahead of the $80 Standard Edition because it bundles extra in-game content, and because it sits at the top of PlayStation Store charts that rank by revenue rather than by units sold.

GTA 6 editions and prices compared

Rockstar set the Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99. The $20 gap is where most of the debate sits, because the Ultimate tier holds a long list of extra content rather than just cosmetic items.

EditionPriceWhat you get
Standard$79.99The base game
Ultimate$99.99The base game plus extra vehicles, weapons, outfits, mod shops, a salon, a tattoo parlor, a gang compound side mission, and a special commission mission pack

The Ultimate Edition additions include the ’95 Grotti Cheetah, the Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers, personalized Girardi ES9 and Klose K17 pistols, the Dinka Enduro motorcycle, the Crest Kayak, the Shitzu Squalo watercraft, and the ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy. It also unlocks Rideout Customs and One-Eyed Willie’s mod shops, Sara’s Unisex Salon, the Electric Fang Tattoo parlor, the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store gang compound and side mission, and the Classic Car Collection mission pack.

Pre-orders also come with a “Vintage Vice City” bonus pack, which adds the ’55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court personal garage, a pastel suit for Jason, a red sequin mini dress for Lucia, and a tropical gun pattern.

Why the Ultimate Edition is leading pre-orders

Two things are pushing buyers toward the higher tier. The first is the content itself. Rockstar has described the Ultimate Edition extras as “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story,” unlocking chapter by chapter as you play. That framing turns the upgrade into gameplay you experience during the campaign rather than a set of standalone cosmetics, which pushes committed fans to pay the extra $20.

The second is momentum in the charts. The $99.99 Ultimate Edition has been sitting at number one on PlayStation Store pre-order charts across nine tracked markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, India, and South Korea. Premium editions of several other games have been outperforming their cheaper counterparts on the same charts.

The catch: PlayStation Store charts rank by revenue

A number one spot does not automatically mean most buyers picked the pricier version. PlayStation Store charts are calculated by revenue, not by copies sold, and a more expensive product has a built-in head start.

The math is straightforward. The Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 and the Standard costs $79.99, a ratio of exactly 1.25 to 1. So the Ultimate Edition only needs 80 sales to match the revenue of 100 Standard sales. Topping a revenue chart proves the Ultimate Edition is selling at least 80 percent as many copies as the Standard, but it does not prove it is the version most players are choosing.

Zelnick has said the overall pre-order response has run well ahead of expectations, describing the numbers on a Take-Two investor call as astronomical and unprecedented, though he declined to share actual figures.

Don’t expect a price cut anytime soon

Asked about a possible holiday discount, Zelnick said it would be unlikely, because Take-Two plans to hold the price for a long time. In practice, that means GTA 6 is not likely to see a markdown in the near term, so waiting for a Christmas deal is not a reliable strategy.

Note: The game is digital only. Physical boxes will contain a download code rather than a disc, which removes the ability to resell a used copy and lowers the collector value of a physical edition.

Release date and platforms

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version for launch, which is one reason a large share of interested players say they are holding off rather than pre-ordering now.

The short version: for anyone deciding between the two editions: the Standard Edition gets you the base game at $80, while the $100 Ultimate Edition adds content that unlocks as you progress through the story. With no discount expected for a long stretch, the choice comes down to whether those extra missions, vehicles, and locations are worth the additional $20 to you at launch.
