Quick answer: WoW Forever is a permanent third home beside modern WoW and Classic. It adds new zones, dungeons, the Skyborne race and reworked classes, and the cap stays at level 60. One subscription covers Forever and modern WoW.

World of Warcraft: Forever starts from original WoW. It takes place after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, on Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. From there it grows outward with new places, new systems and new class designs instead of new levels. A dash in the table below marks something that isn’t compared here.

WoW Forever features that stay familiar from Classic

If you’ve played Classic, the base of WoW Forever will feel familiar. You still level from 1 to 60 across the original continents. The original dungeons are still in the game, and PvP still uses ranks 1 through 14 earned with Honor.

Classes return in a revisited form. Their talent and ability changes build on how they worked in original WoW, so the class identities are the same even where the details have changed.

You can also make the game look and handle like Classic. Each character can use Standard Definition models, which the game describes as “the style associated with the original look”. The Classic Experience Preset starts you with a classic screen layout, key binds that turn the camera, and quest guidance, the one-bag view and transmog all switched off.

What WoW Forever adds compared with Classic

Zones, dungeons, raids and battlegrounds

The map adds four new zones: Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas, the Riverglades and Zephras Isle. Together they bring more than 1,000 new quests. Nine new five-player dungeons cover levels 13 to 60.

The new raids are Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, and they open with Onyxia’s Lair on 9 December 2026. On the PvP side there is a new 15 vs 15 battleground, Darkspear Islands.

Races, class combinations and abilities

Skyborne is a new playable race. On the Horde it plays as the Windshapers, and on the Alliance as the High Order. Playing Skyborne requires a pack. Six race and class combinations are new:

FactionNew combinations
AllianceHuman Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest
HordeOrc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin

Racial abilities have been updated, and every class has new talents and abilities. Hunters, for example, can now set traps in combat. Their pets scale with the Hunter’s gear, and each pet family has its own abilities. Dual specialization unlocks at level 40.

New systems and options

  • Legacy System: account-wide progression through challenges, Legacy Points, perks and cosmetic rewards. At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points.
  • Camping: you set up campsites with Camp Features made through professions, and those features give buffs.
  • Collections and transmog: both are part of the game.
  • Experience Presets: pick Classic or Enhanced at first login, plus HD or SD models for each character.
  • Advanced options: include a Cooldown Manager and a Damage Meter.
  • Gamepad support: available in beta.

WoW Forever if you come from modern WoW

Don’t expect your modern main to carry over in feel. It doesn’t promise the same build or combat rhythm you know from the modern game.

Progression also works differently. The level cap stays at 60 and never goes higher. WoW Forever keeps growing with new content, but it doesn’t add new levels.

For a current-era feel, select the Enhanced Experience Preset. It enables quest markers for points of interest and objective zones, a single-bag display, transmog, strafe key binds, a unified screen arrangement, and HD models.

Even with a gamepad, you still need a keyboard for some tasks, such as chat.

WoW Forever rulesets replace the realm list

WoW Forever doesn’t use a traditional realm list. Instead, you choose a Ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP. A Hardcore Ruleset is coming later.

  • To group, join a guild, run dungeons or raid together, characters must share the same Ruleset and faction.
  • On the PvP Ruleset, each player is limited to one faction.
  • Character names have two parts and must be unique within a region.

If you plan to play with friends, agree on a Ruleset and faction before anyone makes a character.
