A surprise Sonic the Hedgehog comic book has laid out exactly which SEGA characters are heading into Fortnite. Published together by SEGA and Epic Games, the one-shot arrives just before Chapter 7 Season 4, the “Override” season, and it does more than tease. It names the speedsters joining the battle royale and gives an in-universe reason for the slightly off-model, robotic versions fans have been seeing in teasers.
Quick answer: The comic confirms Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles as skins and sets up a Tails Sidekick, teasing four new skins and one sidekick when Chapter 7 Season 4 launches on August 20, 2026.

Which Sonic skins the comic confirms
The cover puts three characters front and center. Enhanced, robotic versions of Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles step out of a Zero Point Rift with a Chaos Emerald in hand, squaring off against their original selves from SEGA’s reality. Inside, a page confirms that robotic clones of the three speedsters are sent into Fortnite to stop the villains, which lines up with three Sonic crossover skins landing in the season.

The final page, marked “to be continued,” shows Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles leaping into a rift portal on the Fortnite map. Look at the bottom-left corner of that page and there’s a Pac-Man ghost tucked in, another confirmation of the wider lineup of gaming crossovers coming to the season.
Tails is a Sidekick, not a skin
Tails joins the crossover in a different role. Epic Games has confirmed that Chapter 7 Season 4 will feature a Tails Sidekick, so Sonic’s flying fox companion tags along rather than becoming a full playable character. A teaser showed Peely moving through a Green Hill Zone point of interest before Tails’ twin tails start spinning and the player flies across the map, hinting at a hovering or flight ability tied to the Sidekick.
The official Sonic social account leaned into it after the teaser went live, writing, “That’s one trusty Fortnite sidekick… You wanna fly high, Tails?” A separate cryptic exchange, complete with a laptop image and a passcode prompt, kept fans guessing before the role was confirmed.
The story behind the robotic clones
The comic’s plot explains why these Sonic characters look mechanized. Eggman is building a powerful machine alongside Geno to forge a brand-new reality. Because the Zero Point is unstable, Geno needs a Chaos Emerald’s power to pull it off. With the two villains teaming up, Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Tails hatch a plan to send robotic clones of the three speedsters into Fortnite’s reality to stop them.
The pages also slip in a Metal Sonic and other evil clones, which points to a larger role for the villains across the season. Written and drawn by Stanley, ARQ, Kim, and McGrath, the full one-shot is available to read through Epic’s Sonic the Hedgehog x Fortnite comic post.

When Chapter 7 Season 4 launches
Chapter 7 Season 4, branded Override, launches on August 20, 2026, after the current season ends and a period of downtime. The Sonic crossover is one piece of a broader Gaming Legends theme that also brings in Persona 5’s Joker, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Tetris, and a Minecraft tie-in. Expect Epic to keep rolling out Override teasers up to launch, with additional reveals likely to fill in the exact skins, mechanics, and the Green Hill Zone location before the season goes live.
