Grab the key at Desolate Peak in western Fainweald, then open the Hall of Echoes across the map to claim its loot.

The Crypt Key in Mortal Shell 2 is one of those items that sends you across an entire region before it pays off. The door it opens sits at one end of Fainweald, while the key itself is tucked into a ruined building at the opposite end. Once you know where each point sits, the whole detour takes only a few minutes.

Quick answer: Pick up the Crypt Key from the wooden table inside the ruined building at Desolate Peak in western Fainweald, then carry it to the locked tower in eastern Fainweald, north of the Grisha Hunting Grounds and south of the Stones of Remembrance, and interact with the doors to open the Hall of Echoes.

Where the Crypt Key is located

The key waits at Desolate Peak, a wind-battered spot in the western reaches of Fainweald. You reach it by crossing a wooden suspension bridge onto the peninsula south of the main settlement. The peak is home to Baghead, a returning face from the first game, who has an unusual request tied to the area.

The Crypt Key sits inside the stone ruins there, resting on a wooden table beside a candle and barrel. A nearby note hints at what Baghead wants, but you only need the key to move on.

How to reach Desolate Peak

Make your way to the Citadel of Penance first, since it acts as your jumping-off point for this area. From there, follow the sloping path that leads down to the lower cliffside section.

Continue past the spot where you fight the Bloodcrused Lithopod, the Giant Stone Crab miniboss. Just beyond it, an archway acts as a drop-down route toward the peak.
Cross the wooden suspension bridge onto the peninsula and enter the ruined building. Walk up to the wooden table and pick up the Crypt Key from its surface.

Where to use the Crypt Key

The matching door is all the way over in eastern Fainweald. Look for a hilly area due north of the Grisha Hunting Grounds and south of the Stones of Remembrance. The locked tower stands there, reached by climbing a set of stone stairs past a broken bell.

Travel to the courtyard in the east and climb the stone steps up to the large wooden double doors.

Interact with the doors and select “YES” when prompted to use the Crypt Key. The doors swing open and reveal the stairs leading down.
Head down into the dungeon known as the Hall of Echoes. Watch for the Coffin Eye lurking in the tunnel as you push forward.
Find the stone block in the tunnel and strike it so it lands on the pressure plate. That opens the way into a small chamber holding the rewards.

You know the key worked the moment the double doors open and the prompt disappears. If nothing happens, you are almost certainly at the wrong door, since only the eastern tower accepts this key.

What you get inside the Hall of Echoes

The inner chamber holds three items worth the trip across the region.

ItemUse
Winterglass GemSell it to Merrick for 1,000 coins.
DorsaliteUpgrades weapons and sidearms at the Tarforge.
Sheephead TotemKill the sheep in the room to loot it. Turns you into a sheep to stay undetectable and passively lowers the maximum health of enemies by a small amount.

Note: The Sheephead Totem only drops after you deal with the sheep in that room, so clear it before you leave. With the Crypt Key spent and the Hall of Echoes emptied, you can turn your attention to the other sealed doors scattered around Fainweald, including the tower opened by the Chapel Key.
