Once Human: Best Tech Point Farming Spots (Reverse Engineering)

Where to strip high-tech facilities for the biggest Tech Point payouts, plus the fastest way to research them at your base.

Where to strip high-tech facilities for the biggest Tech Point payouts, plus the fastest way to research them at your base.

Tech Points drive almost everything you unlock in Once Human, from workbenches and generators to gear and building pieces. You earn a trickle just by leveling up, but the real volume comes from Reverse Engineering, which means recycling pre-built facilities out in the world and researching them back at your base. A handful of specific zones are packed with the high-value machines that pay out the most.

Quick answer: Craft a Recycling Tool, then loot and recycle high-tech facilities at Blackfell Oil Fields, 73 Source Extraction Point, and Blackfell Fallen Zone in northern Nalcott. Take everything to a Tech Research Workbench and reverse engineer it. Advanced generators and benches yield 1,300–2,000 Tech Points each.

How Reverse Engineering earns Tech Points

Reverse Engineering is the fastest way to bank Tech Points. You find pre-built base structures scattered around points of interest, disassemble them with a Recycling Tool, and haul them home to research. Anything that shows up in your Build menu is a valid target, including workbenches, furnaces, generators, and Securement Pods.

There is a trade-off worth knowing before you start. A reverse engineered item is consumed in the process, but you also unlock its recipe if you did not already own it. More advanced machines like generators, pumps, and electric tools return far more points, and those live in higher-level zones.

Craft a Recycling Tool at a Supplies Workbench. Make more than one, because they break quickly and you do not want to run dry mid-run.
Travel to a point of interest and look for pre-built facilities such as workbenches, furnaces, and generators. Pull out the Recycling Tool and use it on each one to disassemble it straight into your inventory.
Back at your base, build and interact with a Tech Research Workbench. Open the Reverse Engineering tab, press the plus icon, and select the items you want to break down.
Add your picks to the Research Queue and close the selection menu. The workbench processes them automatically and hands over the Tech Points. You can queue smaller items too, including weapons, ammunition, and food.

Tip: You can run several Tech Research Workbenches at once to process a big haul faster while batch research is unavailable.

Best Tech Point farming locations

The strongest returns come from the desert biome in northern Nalcott, around the town of Blackfell. The points of interest here have solid odds of holding high-tech machines like Fusion Pods, Large Hydropower Generators, and advanced workbenches. Everything you grab converts into a large stack of points, and you keep the recipes for free.

LocationWhat you can strip
73 Source Extraction Point (Red Sands)All tiers of Hydropower, Solar, and Biomass generators, advanced furnaces, Advanced Synthesis Bench, refineries, custom disassembly bench, water pump, storage crates
Blackfell Oil FieldsMany generators, small and large refineries, furnaces, a Large Garage, custom disassembly bench, and Deviation Power Generators
Blackfell Fallen ZoneHigh-tier facilities, advanced workbenches, gathering tools, rare scrap, and plenty of chests
Sunshroud Cave (Ember Strand)Solar, Hydropower, and Biomass generators, refinery facilities, advanced and electric furnaces, custom disassembly bench, and more

Sunshroud Cave, on the northwestern side of Ember Strand, is a standout if you are playing the Way of Winter or Endless Dream scenarios. The entrance area alone usually holds several generator variants, and the interior packs in refineries, furnaces, and benches in a tight loop. Blackfell town itself is weaker for raw points but useful for basic benches, taming facilities, and crafting materials.

Sample route: 73 Source Extraction Point

The 73 Source Extraction Point in Red Sands is a reliable high-yield run because the facilities sit close together in one basin. It is tuned for higher-level characters, so expect Rosetta enemies patrolling the grounds.

Fast travel in and climb the watchtower overlooking the basin. Loot the Storage Crate at the top and use a scope to map out where the generators sit below before you drop in.

Glide down toward the edge of the facility to skip the worst of the enemies, then clear the road between the military trucks with your rifle so you can recycle in peace.

Recycle the generators you find. The Improved Large Hydropower Generator is the prize here, but the standard Large Hydropower Generator and a nearby Weapon Rack are worth grabbing on the same loop.

When your bag is full, teleport home and feed everything into the Tech Research Workbench under the Construction tab, then hit Join Research Queue.

Tech Point values by facility

Not every recycle is equal. Improved and advanced machines roughly double the payout of a basic version, so prioritize generators and specialty benches over decorative or entry-level items.

FacilityTech Points on research
Improved Large Hydropower Generator2,000
Custom Disassembly Bench2,000
Improved Large Biomass Generator~2,000
Recycling Electric Furnace~2,000
Large Hydropower Generator1,330
Weapon Rack1,330

You will know a research batch worked when the points land in your Tech total and the matching node unlocks in the Tech tree under Build or Production. A full haul from a strong route can clear well over 20,000 Tech Points in a single session.

What not to scrap, and rare crafting materials

Some items are worth far more built than researched. Do not scrap anything above white rarity, because most of those pieces feed into crafting facilities, weapons, and gear. A short list of rare materials should never go into the disassembly bench, since replacing them is slow and expensive.

Rare materialUsed to craft
Welding MachineAdvanced furnaces (Hybrid, Stardust, Recycling)
Oven MittsStardust Fusion Stove
Steel PliersCustom Disassembly Bench
Versatile Screwdriver SetAmmunition and Medicine Supplies Workbenches
Custom CableAll Improved Power Generators
Flight StickTwo-seater wings

A few Construction-tab items cannot be researched but are still worth placing. The Microwave Oven refreshes food durability once powered, effectively giving food an infinite shelf life. The Rescue Bot lets you recover lost items after death, which is handy if you die somewhere awkward like a lava zone.

Timing your runs around the loot reset

World loot refreshes every four hours on a global timer, starting at 12:00 AM UTC. The most efficient approach is to log in and clear your route just before a reset, then run it again right after the timer flips so you double up in one sitting. If facilities or materials fail to spawn, relog to force them in.

Facility spawns are shared across everyone on a server, so a spot that pays out for one player will pay out for the next. Carry a weight buffer with a Featherweight Whim Potion, backpack expansions, and ammo packs so you can strip an entire basin before heading home. With two or three of the Blackfell and Red Sands zones on rotation, you can comfortably unlock the entire tech tree without ever touching the invention feature or dismantling your rare materials.
