Oni Armaments and Oni Power Abilities in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

How blue souls fuel the Wind-Whipper, Earth-Shakers, and Two Celestials, and what each Oni ability unlocks for Musashi.

Musashi’s Oni Gauntlet turns every kill into fuel. Souls pulled from defeated Genma feed three separate systems in Onimusha: Way of the Sword — one keeps him alive, one pays for upgrades, and one charges the Oni Power gauge that summons his Oni Armaments. Those armaments are not weapons you equip and carry; they are timed bursts you spend, and the gauge decides when you get to use them.

Quick answer: Hit enemies to knock loose blue souls, absorb them to fill the Oni Power gauge, then spend the full gauge to summon an Oni Armament — the Wind-Whipper, the Earth-Shakers, or the Two Celestials. Using one empties the gauge, and that armament stays unavailable until blue souls refill it.

Blue souls and the Oni Power gauge

Attacking an enemy shakes souls loose before it dies, and the gauntlet draws them in automatically when you are close enough. Blue souls are the only ones that matter for armaments — they feed the Oni Power gauge and nothing else. The gauge is visible on the combat HUD, and the interface flags an armament as ready once you have enough charge to summon it.

Souls come in three colors, and mixing them up is the most common reason players run dry mid-boss.

SoulWhat it does
BlueCharges the Oni Power gauge that summons Oni Armaments.
YellowRestores Musashi’s health. Certain armament hits generate these.
RedPays for equipment upgrades and new abilities in the enhancement menu.

Because blue souls only drop from combat, there is no way to stockpile them outside a fight. Clearing a room before a boss door is the practical way to walk in with a full gauge.

Oni Armaments: Wind-Whipper, Earth-Shakers, and Two Celestials

Oni Armaments are weapons forged by the Oni, summoned rather than carried. Each one does something Musashi’s sword cannot, so the choice is less about raw damage and more about the problem in front of you.

ArmamentWhat it does
Wind-WhipperSpins a double-bladed naginata overhead, raising a whirlwind that hits a wide area and sends enemies flying. Ranged attacks that enter the vortex are cancelled, and contact with a flame turns the whirlwind into a burning cyclone.
Earth-ShakersPaired hammers that slam the ground. They tear through stamina, shields, and armor, and holding the attack to charge it increases the damage.
Two CelestialsA rapid flurry from two blades. Enemies struck by it drop yellow souls, so it doubles as a way to heal in the middle of a fight.

Oni Power also covers The Flashing Void, a high-damage lightning strike that lands far harder than a standard combo. Like the armaments, it is gated behind the gauge, so it competes for the same blue souls.

Note: the Earth-Shakers pair naturally with Break Issen. Draining a large enemy’s stamina with hammer slams opens the window for a finisher that ordinary attacks take much longer to set up.

Oni Abilities: Vision, Strength, Agility, and Awakening

Separate from the armaments, the gauntlet awakens a set of Oni Abilities as the story progresses. They serve combat and exploration at the same time, and several of them are what let you reach areas you had to walk past earlier.

AbilityWhat it does
Oni VisionReveals what human eyes cannot see, including hidden Genma obstacles. Required for several puzzles.
Oni StrengthFills Musashi’s arms with inhuman force. Breaks through enemy guards and smashes barriers blocking a route.
Oni AgilityExplosive leg power for acrobatics, including running along specific walls to open new paths.
Oni AwakeningThe fully awakened Oni form, with far stronger combat abilities and the Onimusha Onslaught technique.

If a wall, door, or seal refuses to react, the usual cause is an ability you have not unlocked yet rather than a missed input. Oni Vision is the quickest check — anything it highlights is meant to be broken or interacted with.

Raising Oni Armament Power in the enhancement menu

Armament damage is not fixed. The Enhance Equipment / Abilities menu is where you push it upward, alongside Musashi’s regular and Issen damage.

Open Enhance Equipment / Abilities. Three slots are listed here — Clothing, Sword, and Gauntlet — each with its own Proficiency Level that rises as you invest in it.
Spend crafting materials on the piece you want to improve. Whetstone, Iron, and Tamahagane are the materials consumed here, and the upgrade screen shows the resulting change to Regular Attack Power, Issen Power, and Oni Armament Power before you confirm.
Switch to the Basic Skills tree and unlock combat fundamentals using Power Stones. Reflex Combo and Chain Issen live here, and each node shows an Unlock prompt once you can afford it.

Move to the Special Skills tree, which is paid for with Oni Stones instead. Exploration upgrades such as Oni Vision: Treasures sit on this side of the menu.

An unlock has gone through when the node fills in and the skill appears in your ability list. Upgrades to gear register as a higher Proficiency Level on that piece and updated numbers on the stat readout.

When to spend a full Oni Power gauge

Spending the gauge on a lone weak enemy is the main way to waste it. The gauge does not partially recover into a usable state — the armament is simply gone until blue souls bring it back, so the timing of the summon matters more than the target.

  • Save it for armored enemies, mini-bosses, and bosses, where the burst removes a meaningful chunk of health.
  • Use the Two Celestials when you are low on health and out of items — the yellow souls it generates are effectively a heal that also deals damage.
  • Lead with the Earth-Shakers against shields and heavy armor to strip stamina and create a Break Issen opening.
  • Bring out the Wind-Whipper when you are surrounded or under ranged fire, since the vortex both scatters bodies and eats incoming projectiles.

Chaining parries also feeds the loop. Blazing State raises your damage and makes your attacks throw off more blue souls, which is the fastest legitimate way to recharge an armament mid-fight rather than waiting between encounters.

Treated as a resource loop rather than a special move, the gauntlet is fairly simple. Aggressive, accurate swordplay produces souls, souls buy armaments and upgrades, and armaments produce the openings and health that keep the aggression going. The players who struggle with the Oni Power gauge are usually the ones sitting on a full charge instead of turning it into stamina damage on something dangerous.
