The Deogen is the one ghost in Phasmophobia you cannot hide from. It knows where every player is standing at all times during a hunt, walls and floors included, so the usual closet-and-wait routine simply fails. The trade-off is that it becomes the slowest ghost in the game once it closes in, and that contrast is the fastest way to name it.
Quick answer: Confirm D.O.T.S. Projector, Ghost Writing, and Spirit Box, then watch one hunt — if the ghost sprints toward the nearest player from across the map and then crawls the moment it gets close, it is a Deogen.
Deogen evidence in Phasmophobia
A Deogen leaves three pieces of evidence. Nothing about the ghost changes which three you get, so the journal work is standard.
| Evidence | How to collect it |
|---|---|
| D.O.T.S. Projector | Mount it in the ghost room and watch for a silhouette moving through the laser grid, either directly or on a camera feed. |
| Ghost Writing | Leave a writing book on a surface in the ghost room and give it time; higher tier books have a wider radius and better odds. |
| Spirit Box | Turn the lights off in the room, stand near the ghost, and ask questions out loud. |
On difficulties that only hand out one or two pieces of evidence, such as Nightmare and Insanity, the Deogen is guaranteed to have Spirit Box. That is because its unique audio response is tied to the device, so the game never strips it away. If Spirit Box is ruled out on those difficulties, the Deogen is ruled out with it.

Add to Google Preferences →The heavy breathing Spirit Box response
Ask a question through the Spirit Box while standing within 1 metre of the ghost and there is a 33% chance per question that it answers with constant, heavy, bull-like breathing instead of a spoken word. That sound belongs to the Deogen alone, and hearing it once is a confirmation on its own.
The hard part is being within a metre of something invisible. A Tier III Motion Sensor makes it manageable, since its detection sphere is only slightly wider than the range needed for the breathing response. Place the sensor down, wait for it to trigger, then stand on top of it and ask questions. In a large ghost room without a sensor, this test turns into a lot of walking and guesswork.
Hunt speed: the pattern that confirms a Deogen
During a hunt the Deogen never roams. It permanently has line of sight on every player, picks the nearest one by straight-line distance, commits to that target for 10 seconds, and can then re-pick a new nearest target every 5 to 10 seconds. Its speed is calculated from pathfinding distance to that target, and it does not get a line-of-sight speed boost like most ghosts.
| Distance to target | Movement speed |
|---|---|
| Above 6 metres | 3 m/s (faster than a sprinting-away player expects) |
| Below 6 metres | Pathfinding distance × 0.15 m/s |
| Very close | 0.4 m/s minimum, slower than your walking speed |
Two smaller tells back this up. The Deogen flickers less during a hunt and stays visible roughly 53% to 56% of the time, against about 31% to 33% for a standard ghost, so it reads as unusually solid. It also has a slightly higher chance of interacting with doors, at 30% instead of 25%.
Its kill window is different too. You still die instantly inside 1.1 metres, but between there and 1.5 metres you get 2 seconds of grace instead of the usual 1 second.
Ghosts commonly mistaken for a Deogen
Fast footsteps alone prove nothing. Several ghosts sprint, and misreading one of them as a Deogen is how people die while calmly walking backwards.
| Ghost | How to tell it apart |
|---|---|
| Thaye | Moves quickly early in a contract while young, but never slows to a crawl as it reaches you. Avoid forcing a hunt in the first minutes for this reason. |
| Revenant | Speeds up dramatically once it has spotted someone and keeps that speed. It does not decelerate on approach. |
| Moroi | Gets faster as team sanity drops. At very low sanity it can feel Deogen-fast without the slowdown. |
| Deildegast | Can move fast when there have been few interactions, again with no close-range slowdown. |
| Mimic | Copies Deogen behaviour outright, including the speed pattern, so the evidence still has to match. |
The Deogen also hunts at 40% average sanity rather than the usual 50%, which is a useful cross-check when the evidence is ambiguous.
Force a hunt with a cursed possession to test the speed
If you already have the three evidence types and want a behavioural confirmation, trigger the hunt yourself in a place you have chosen instead of waiting for one at 40% sanity.

Note: do not run this test at the very start of a contract, because a young Thaye moves at a similar speed and will not slow down.
Surviving the hunt once you have confirmed it
Hiding is not an option. The Deogen has permanent line of sight, so a locker or closet only guarantees it walks straight to you. Instead, keep moving and put something solid between you and the ghost. A table, a counter, a car, a tent, or a campfire all work — at 0.4 m/s it cannot out-pace a walking player, and it can be circled indefinitely.

On big maps such as Sunny Meadows or Brownstone High School you do not even need an obstacle. Walking a lap of the building is enough, provided you never turn into a dead end. Tight spaces with a single exit are the only realistic way a Deogen kills a player who knows what they are dealing with.
Incense behaves oddly here. The Deogen keeps whatever speed it had when the smudge landed, which is usually its 0.4 m/s minimum, so it only shuffles a short distance before resuming the chase. During the blinding effect its speed is locked at 0.4 m/s on 50%, 75%, and 100% ghost speed difficulties, and 1.6 m/s on 125% and 150%. Incense is still worth carrying, mainly because it forces the ghost to re-pick a target when the effect ends.
In multiplayer, give yourself more room than feels necessary. The Deogen only re-evaluates its target periodically rather than in real time, and unlike a Banshee it will happily kill a player who is not its target. Do not line up behind a teammate, and do not cut your loops tight if your connection is unstable.
One last practical point. Because it stays visible for so long and moves so slowly up close, the Deogen is among the easiest ghosts to photograph, so keep a camera on you during the loop. And if you need to step away from an active game, leave the building entirely rather than tucking yourself into a hiding spot — it will find you.
