The Thaye is one of the few ghosts in Phasmophobia that gets less dangerous the longer you stay in the building. It arrives fast, aggressive, and willing to hunt at almost full sanity, then slowly winds down into something slower than your walking speed. That reversal is the tell, and there is a way to measure it directly.
Quick answer: Confirm D.O.T.S. Projector, Ghost Orb, and Ghost Writing, then ask a Ouija Board “How old are you?” early in the contract and again later. If the second number is noticeably higher than the first, it is a Thaye.
Thaye evidence in Phasmophobia
The Thaye uses three evidence types. Finding anything outside this set rules it out immediately.
| Evidence | How to catch it |
|---|---|
| D.O.T.S. Projector | Place the projector in the ghost room and watch for a silhouette moving through the dots. A Video Camera pointed at it lets you check from the truck. |
| Ghost Orb | Only visible through camera footage with night vision on. Orbs are small, single, and drift in one part of the ghost room, so cover multiple angles. |
| Ghost Writing | Drop the Ghost Writing Book on a surface in the ghost room. Scribbles count. If the ghost moves the book but never writes, it is not a Thaye. |
Two of these three can be read from the truck, so setting up a camera aimed at both the D.O.T.S. Projector and the orb-friendly corner is the safest way to work an early contract with this ghost.

Add to Google Preferences →How the Thaye aging mechanic works
The journal describes it plainly. Strength: “Upon entering the location, Thaye will become active, defensive and agile.” Weakness: “Thaye will weaken over time, making them weaker, slower and less aggressive.”
Under the hood, the ghost carries an internal age value. One minute after an exit door is first opened, it tries to age. If at least one player is in its room or within three meters, its age goes up by one and it tries again after one to two minutes. If nobody is close, it waits only 30 seconds before trying again. Aging that lands during a hunt only takes effect once the hunt ends.
| Age | Hunt sanity threshold | Activity | Hunt speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 75% | 200% | 2.75 m/s |
| 1 | 69% | 185% | 2.575 m/s |
| 2 | 63% | 170% | 2.4 m/s |
| 3 | 57% | 155% | 2.225 m/s |
| 4 | 51% | 140% | 2.05 m/s |
| 5 | 45% | 125% | 1.875 m/s |
| 6 | 39% | 110% | 1.7 m/s |
| 7 | 33% | 95% | 1.525 m/s |
| 8 | 27% | 80% | 1.35 m/s |
| 9 | 21% | 65% | 1.175 m/s |
| 10+ | 15% | 50% | 1 m/s |
Note: a development oversight means the real hunt sanity threshold sits one percent below each listed value.
Ghost events thin out on the same curve. The chance of a chosen event succeeding is 1 minus age divided by nine, so after nine ages the Thaye stops producing events entirely unless a cursed possession forces one. It also pokes at doors slightly more than a standard ghost, 30 percent instead of 25 percent.
Confirm a Thaye with the Ouija Board age question
Every ghost is given a human age between 10 and 90 that it will report on a Ouija Board. Only the Thaye changes that number mid-contract, adding one to four years each time it ages. Two readings taken far enough apart are all the confirmation you need.

| Map | Ouija Board location |
|---|---|
| Tanglewood Drive | Small table in the basement |
| Edgefield Road | Under the metal rack in the laundry room |
| Ridgeview Court | On the laundry room rack |
| Grafton Farmhouse | Small room off the bedroom |
| Willow Street | On the washing machine |
| Brownstone High School | Behind a pillar in the auditorium |
| Bleasdale Farmhouse | On top of a work bench |
| Sunny Meadows (and Restricted) | In the chapel |
| Prison | Behind the counter near the entrance |
| Maple Lodge Campsite | Storage room rack near the bathroom |
| Camp Woodwind | Table beside the campfire pit |

Two things break this test. The Ouija Board drains sanity quickly, so a careless session can drop you into hunt range before you get your second answer. And The Mimic picks a random age when it copies a Thaye, which means a single strange reading proves nothing on its own.
Behavior tells during a hunt
Without a Ouija Board, hunt behavior gives you the same read. Most ghosts accelerate the moment they have line of sight on you. The Thaye does not, and its speed only ever falls as the contract runs on.
Its 75 percent hunt sanity threshold is the highest in the game at age zero, above the Demon’s 70 percent, so an aggressive hunt in the first minutes after setup is a strong hint. It also skips the usual scaling with average sanity, instead rolling a flat one-in-eight chance to hunt whenever it leaves an idle state below its current threshold.
Watch the arc across several hunts. Fast and loud early, then progressively slower, quieter, and less willing to hunt at all, is the Thaye signature. After four ages it can no longer keep up with a player sprinting off cooldown, and after seven it falls behind walking speed and can be looped freely.
Ruling out ghosts that look like a Thaye
| Ghost | How to tell it apart |
|---|---|
| Obambo | Shares two evidence types and switches between hunt speeds and sanity thresholds. Unlike the Thaye, it does gain speed with sustained line of sight and can change base speed mid-hunt. |
| Hantu | Also refuses to speed up on line of sight, but leaves Ultraviolet and Freezing Temperatures, neither of which a Thaye produces. |
| Deogen | Slows down as it closes in and always finds you, but answers the Spirit Box. |
| Revenant | Overlaps on Ghost Orbs and Ghost Writing, then accelerates hard the instant it spots you. |
| Mare | Same orbs and writing, but adds Spirit Box instead of D.O.T.S. |
| Yokai / Yurei / Raiju | All pair D.O.T.S. with Ghost Orbs. Check for Spirit Box, Freezing Temperatures, or EMF Level Five respectively. |
| Demon | Hunts early too, but leaves Ultraviolet and Freezing Temperatures alongside Ghost Writing. |
Surviving the early contract
Because the danger is front-loaded, find hiding spots before you find evidence. Incense and Crucifixes cover the window where a hunt can start at near-full sanity, and the ghost’s doubled activity in those first minutes makes locating the ghost room unusually quick.
Use that same early burst for photos and non-hunt objectives, since events dry up as the ghost ages. Save hunt-related objectives for later. Once the Thaye has aged past your walking speed, parking in the ghost room and triggering a hunt with a cursed possession turns the most dangerous ghost of the opening minutes into the easiest one to outrun.
