Coen learns far more abilities than he can carry, and the limit is set by ability slots. Each of the three trees in The Blood of Dawnwalker starts with too few slots to equip everything you unlock, so an ability sitting in a tree does nothing until you have a free slot for it. Extra slots come from one specific perk per tree rather than from general leveling.
Quick answer: Level Forbidden Sigils for Witchcraft, Master Fencer for Swordmastery, and Vrakhiri Might for Vampirism. Each level of these perks adds one more ability slot in its own tree.

The three ability-slot perks at a comparison
Witchcraft abilities only work during the day, Vampirism abilities only work at night, and Swordmastery abilities work at any time. That means the slots you invest in should follow the build you actually intend to play. Every one of these perks costs skill points and time segments, so plan before spending.
| Tree | Slot perk | Prerequisite | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Witchcraft | Forbidden Sigils | Unnatural Resilience | Third row from the left |
| Swordmastery | Master Fencer | Sustained Focus | Below the Sustained Focus node |
| Vampirism | Vrakhiri Might | Corruption level | First column on the left |

Add to Google Preferences →Witchcraft: unlock Forbidden Sigils through Unnatural Resilience
Forbidden Sigils is the perk that adds Witchcraft ability slots, but it is gated behind another node. You first need Unnatural Resilience, which raises Coen’s armor whenever a Witchcraft ability is active. Taking Unnatural Resilience opens access to Forbidden Sigils in the third row from the left.
Each level of Forbidden Sigils grants one more slot. The early ranks are cheap, and the cost only climbs at the top rank.
| Slots available | Skill points | Time segments |
|---|---|---|
| 2 slots | 1 | 1 |
| 3 slots | 1 | 1 |
| 4 slots | 2 | 1 |

Swordmastery: reach Master Fencer under Sustained Focus
Swordmastery works day and night, which makes it the tree most players lean on first, so its slot perk is worth prioritizing. As with Witchcraft, one node stands in the way. You need Sustained Focus before Master Fencer becomes available directly below it, and Master Fencer is what adds Swordmastery ability slots.
The prerequisite is not a wasted purchase. Sustained Focus raises your number of activation charges, so it strengthens your combat kit even before it opens the slot node. Pushing Sustained Focus to rank 4 and Master Fencer to rank 3 gives you the maximum activation charges and the maximum Swordmastery slots.
Vampirism: raise Corruption to feed Vrakhiri Might
Vampirism handles slots differently. There is no separate prerequisite perk to buy first. You only spend skill points in Vrakhiri Might, found in the first column on the left, and each level adds one more Vampiric ability slot, up to four.
The catch is Corruption. Every Vampirism node, Vrakhiri Might included, requires a minimum Corruption level before you can put points into it. Corruption rises when Coen drinks blood, whether directly from enemies or from vials, and killing a powerful Vrakhiri raises it by a large amount at once. That gives you a faster route to the higher slot ranks than grinding weak foes.

Where you actually spend the points
These perks do not unlock in the field. New skills and perks are learned only at special shrines scattered across the map, and nowhere else. A newly discovered shrine has to be restored first by finding its missing heart and returning it before it can be used.
The two day-side trees add one more requirement. To learn Witchcraft and Swordmastery perks, you need the relevant manuals. Buy or find a manual, open it in your inventory to make its skills available, then unlock them at a shrine. Vampirism skips manuals entirely and relies on Corruption instead.
Note: Time is the real limit. Most perks and abilities cost time segments as well as skill points, and the story runs on a hard 30-day clock. Chasing every slot in all three trees in a single playthrough is not realistic, so commit early to a sword, witch, or vampire lean rather than spreading points thin.

How to confirm a new slot unlocked
After you rank up one of these perks, the matching tree gains an extra ability slot, and only then can you equip an ability from that tree into it. If a freshly learned ability still cannot be equipped, you have run out of slots in that tree and need another level of its slot perk. Because you can find the resources for one tree faster than others, avoid buying abilities you have no room to slot yet.
