Hidden Treasures are the fiddliest side content in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Five separate Chance Encounters each start with an NPC handing you an Old Drawing — it looks more like a faded photograph — and that picture is the only real clue you get. The map marker that comes with it is deliberately vague, covering a general area rather than a precise point, so the actual work is matching the image to a rooftop, a waterfall, a gate or a balcony and then triggering the reveal on the exact tile.
Quick answer: Stand on the specific spot pictured in the Old Drawing and use the Oni Eyes. The chest does not exist until the pulse hits the right position, and standing a few metres away in the marked zone will not work.
How the Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters work
Each Hidden Treasure is tied to one fixed location on the Eastern Kyoto map. Once an Old Drawing is in your inventory, a marker appears, but it only narrows the search to a neighbourhood. The chest itself is invisible in the world. Use the Oni Eyes at the correct point and it materializes in front of you, ready to open.
The other complication is traffic. Several of these spots sit in Genma-heavy ground, and you cannot comfortably line up a reveal while you are being swung at. Clear the area first, then worry about positioning. Spirit Mirrors are the most reliable anchors for each hunt, so fast travel to the nearest one and route from there rather than sprinting across the city.

The two climbs: rooftops and the pagoda
Two of the five are vertical puzzles, and both trip people up for the same reason. The X in the drawing is not on the ground you are standing on — it is above you.

The second drawing is another blurry one, but three things are legible in it: the pagoda, a ladder and a waterfall. That is enough. The treasure sits near the tall Yasaka Pagoda and its Spirit Mirror, on the stream that runs close by.
Zooming in on the map is the fastest route. At high zoom, ladders are drawn on the map itself, which points you straight at the right corner of the area. If you would rather do it by eye, trace the stream on the map until it drops into a waterfall. Use the Oni Eyes at the foot of that small waterfall to pull the chest into view.
The two awkward ones: Hidden Treasure No. 3 and No. 4
These are the ones players tend to give up on, and in both cases the failure is positional rather than navigational. You reach the right building and then stand in the wrong place.
Hidden Treasure No. 3: Inside the Kamo River temple wall
The photograph shows an X on a gate beside a tall wall. Only a few places in Eastern Kyoto look like that, and the marker steers you toward the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror. The large Genma-infested temple next to it is the one you want.
The catch is that the search has to happen from inside the wall, not outside it. Enter through the main door just east of the Spirit Mirror, turn immediately right, and walk up to the large closed door. Use the Oni Eyes there and the third chest reveals itself.
Hidden Treasure No. 4: The Gojo Street shrine balcony
Number four sits past the Gojo Street – East Spirit Mirror, in a stretch that is almost permanently crawling with Genma. Look for the single small shrine-like building in the northeast of the area. There is no shortcut to it — you have to take the long southern loop around the zone to get there.
When you arrive, do not go inside. Walk around to the left side of the building, where a small balcony looks out over Eastern Kyoto. That balcony is the trigger point for the Oni Eyes.
How to confirm the treasure has been claimed
A successful reveal is unmistakable. The gold pulse sweeps out, the chest fades into the world, and you get an interact prompt. Opening it awards the loot — items such as Faction Notes turn up in these chests — and the associated Chance Encounter closes out in your objective list.
Your tracker may still be showing something else entirely at that moment, since other Chance Encounters and story objectives run in parallel. Check the Chance Encounter entry itself rather than the top-line objective if you are not sure a treasure has registered.
Why the Oni Eyes reveal fails
- You are inside the marker but not on the spot. The map circle is an approximation. Match the drawing, not the marker.
- You are on the wrong level. Number one needs the second roof, not the first. Number five needs the upper pagoda rooftop, not an interior floor.
- You are outside a wall that has to be searched from within. That is what stalls the Kamo River temple hunt.
- You went indoors instead of around. The Gojo Street treasure is on the exterior balcony.
- Genma are still active. Clear the area first, then reposition and pulse.
Note: the drawings are intentionally low-detail, so treat the objects in them as landmarks rather than a picture of the chest’s surroundings. A ladder, a pagoda silhouette or a stretch of tall wall is usually the single detail that pins down the tile you need to stand on.
Work through all five and the Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters wrap up cleanly, which is the toughest optional thread in the game to close. If one refuses to appear, it is nearly always position rather than progression — step back, re-read the drawing, and pulse again from the exact place it points to.
