The “See where the damage leads using Focus Mode” step in A Friend Like This is one of the easier objectives in The Blood of Dawnwalker to walk straight past. There is no cutscene, no NPC to talk to, and no big glowing waypoint. All you are looking for is a single roof tile sitting on the ground in an alley in Svartrau City, and it only stands out when Focus Mode is switched on.
Quick answer: Go to the alley along the north-east edge of Svartrau City, just south of the wall corner and near the blacksmith, hold Focus Mode (L2/LT) and inspect the yellow-outlined roof tile lying on the ground. The quest immediately updates to “Use vrakhiri skills to investigate the roof.”
Where the fallen roof tile is in Svartrau City
Everything in this stretch of the quest happens inside Svartrau, in the alley that runs below the city walls on the north-eastern side, close to The Cathedral Complex. That alley is where the signs of a struggle are found, and the tile is the next breadcrumb after it. Use the blacksmith as your anchor on the map, then head into the narrow alley beside it and follow it toward the corner of the wall.

The tile itself is on the ground a short distance south of the wall corner. It is a plain object that blends into the alley clutter in normal view, which is exactly why the objective text tells you to use Focus Mode rather than just “look around.”

How to confirm the objective completed
A “QUEST UPDATED” prompt appears the moment the tile is inspected, and the tracked objective in the journal changes from “See where the damage leads using Focus Mode” to “Use vrakhiri skills to investigate the roof.” If the objective text has not changed, the tile has not registered, and you are still standing next to an object you have only looked at rather than interacted with.

Why the objective can appear stuck
There are only a handful of reasons this step refuses to move. Almost all of them come down to position or timing rather than a bug.
- Focus Mode is a hold, not a toggle. Release the button and the yellow outline on the tile disappears.
- You are in the wrong alley. The one that matters runs along the north-east edge of the city, directly below the walls.
- You have not scanned the struggle in the alley yet. That earlier Focus Mode inspection is what opens this objective, and inspecting the alley is also the guaranteed way to start the quest if you have not picked it up.
- You are trying to scale the roof during the day. Inspecting the tile works at any hour, but the roof step that follows is night-only.
Note: if the roof objective is showing a moon icon in the journal and you arrived at midday, the trail is not broken. You simply have to return after dark before Coen can climb.

Once night falls, come back to the same alley, use your vrakhiri abilities to scale the highlighted building, and keep Focus Mode up on the rooftops. Broken tile sections mark the route southwest across several roofs, then claw marks on a wall drop the trail back down to ground level and on to the abandoned building where the rogue vrakhir is waiting.
