Onimusha: Way of the Sword — How to Beat Shuten Doji on Action Difficulty

The two-phase Gourd Drainer fight explained, including the healing gourd, the floating head, and the fire attack that kills most players.

Shuten Doji, the Gourd Drainer, is the Genma waiting at the top of Mount Oe in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and he is the fight that punishes players who arrive with an empty Hozuki pouch. The first half is forgiving. The second half is not, because it starts the moment his body catches fire and his head tears loose to attack you separately.

Quick answer: Save at least half your Hozuki charges for phase two, deflect his sword swings to drain stamina, shoot his floating head with the Oni bow to cancel his dangerous fire attack, and dodge repeatedly when the burning prompt appears — healing charges are not refunded when the second phase begins.

What you need before the Shuten Doji fight starts

The single most important rule of this encounter is a resource rule, not a combat one. Whatever Hozuki charges you burn through in the first phase stay burned. Crossing into the second phase does not top you back up, so a comfortable first half followed by an empty pouch is the most common way this fight ends badly.

Treat the first health bar as a stamina exercise. Deflect and parry rather than trading hits, and only drink when you are genuinely low. Getting to the transition with roughly half your charges intact is the practical target.

PreparationWhy it matters here
Hozuki charges held in reserveNo refund at the phase change; phase two does far more damage
Oni bow readyCancels one of his dangerous second-phase attacks
Charm of the Healer, maxedEach drink restores more, so fewer charges are spent
Charm of Protection, maxedReduces the health lost per hit during the fire phase
Fencer’s Strength Charm, maxedShortens both bars, so less time exposed to fire damage

Note: bosses in this game shift into their enhanced state early if you take heavy damage early. Sloppy play in the opening minutes does not just cost health — it accelerates the part of the fight you least want to reach unprepared.

Phase one: the giant sword and the healing gourd

Shuten Doji opens as a heavyset red-haired Genma swinging an oversized sword. His swings are wide but readable, and almost all of them can be met with a deflect or an Issen counter. Stand your ground rather than circling — his attacks are slow enough that backing away just delays your own damage window.

The complication is the gourd. Periodically he stops to drink from it and restores his own health, which undoes work you have already done. Push aggression during that animation instead of resetting to a safe distance.

The loop is the same one that carries almost every boss in the game. Deflect or counter with Issen, drain his stamina bar, take the soul reward when it opens, then repeat. If you would rather not risk red soul damage, take the purple souls instead and bank the Oni Power and Awakening gauge fill for what comes next.

When the first bar empties, a cutscene takes over. Musashi lands a stab, gets grabbed and thrown, and Shuten Doji’s body bursts into flame. His head detaches and begins floating under its own Genma power. There is no input to save here and no chance to restock.

Phase two: fighting the burning body and the floating head

You are now facing two threats from one boss. The body keeps swinging while wreathed in flame, and the severed head hovers around the arena adding its own attacks. This is where most attempts end, and the failure usually looks identical every time — a fire attack lands, health drops fast, and the “You have fallen” screen appears.

Two things change your survival odds immediately. First, one of his dangerous second-phase attacks can be cancelled outright by shooting his head with the Oni bow — keep the bow on hand rather than saving it. Second, this fight is where Musashi’s Awakened Onimusha form becomes available, and using it is the intended answer to the damage race.

When the Awakening gauge fills, transform and prioritise Issen strikes, which land far more easily in that state. Hold the heavy finisher until the transformation is nearly out of time, then spend it. Rushing the finisher wastes most of the window.

Handling the burning status effect

If a fire attack connects, the game puts a “Dealing with Fire (Burning)” prompt on screen and tells you to evade repeatedly. This is a mash, not a timing check. Keep pressing the dodge button until the flames come off Musashi.

Do not try to heal while burning. You will lose the charge and still be on fire. Clear the status first, create distance from both the body and the head, then drink.

Why the second phase fails and how to fix it

What went wrongThe fix
Pouch empty entering phase twoDeflect more in phase one; charges do not refill at the transition
Killed by a single fire attackShoot the floating head with the Oni bow to cancel it
Burning damage stacking upMash evade on the prompt before doing anything else
Chipping away at a huge health barUse the Awakened Onimusha form and land Issen strikes in it
Boss enhanced earlier than expectedAvoid heavy early damage — damage taken accelerates the shift
Gourd undoing your damageAttack during the drinking animation instead of disengaging

How to confirm the fight is over

The second health bar emptying rolls straight into a cutscene, so there is no ambiguity about whether the kill registered. Musashi, Shizuka, and Okuni talk through his worth as a swordsman and the path he is walking. Once that scene ends, the Mount Oe encounter is closed out.

If you want to run it again, Shuten Doji is available in the Boss Rematch menu at the Practice Ground, which is also where you can rehearse the fire-cancel timing without risking a story restart. Clearing him on every difficulty in that mode contributes toward the Glutton for Punishment trophy and achievement.
