The Veil: Where to Find Bob and What His Binary Message Means

Bob's location in the Murmur mines, his decoded binary lines, and whether talking to him does anything right now.

Bob’s location in the Murmur mines, his decoded binary lines, and whether talking to him does anything right now.

Bob is a hidden NPC tucked inside the mines of The Veil, and he only ever speaks in binary. Players run into him early, try to talk, and get nothing but strings of 1s and 0s in return. Once those numbers are decoded, they read as short pleas for help, but nothing happens when you interact with him.

Quick answer: Bob sits in a narrow crevice in the Murmur area of the mines. His binary decodes to “Pls help me!”, “Why are you here if you can’t help me?”, and “It’s.. so cold..”, but talking to him does not start a quest, give a reward, or trigger any interaction. There is currently no way to help him.

Where to find Bob in the Murmur mines

You will most likely stumble across Bob while working through one of the first side quests. Layton, found in the mines, asks you to kill 15 monsters inside the Murmur, a dark and poorly lit stretch of the caves. The low visibility is exactly what makes Bob easy to walk past, and just as easy to bump into by accident.

Look for a small crevice deep in the cave, wide enough to crawl through. Bob is sitting inside this cramped space, staying put as if he is hiding from something. He cannot move, and he never responds in any human language. Reaching him does not require anything special beyond noticing the gap in the rock.

Bob’s binary message translated to English

Every line Bob delivers is written in binary. If you reply with “What?” or “I don’t understand you,” he simply repeats the same code. Converting the 8-bit groups into ASCII characters produces three short sentences, and they are the only things he ever says.

LineEnglish translation
Message 1Pls help me!
Message 2Why are you here if you can’t help me?
Message 3It’s.. so cold..

If you want to verify the decode yourself, the raw binary for the first line is below. Splitting it into 8-digit blocks and reading each block as an ASCII character gives you “Pls help me!”.

Can you help Bob right now?

No. Decoding the binary does not change anything in the game. Talking to Bob does not open a quest log entry, hand over an item, grant an achievement, or unlock a hidden interaction. He keeps cycling through the same three lines no matter what you choose to say back.

There is no “Help Bob” objective anywhere, and no other questline ties back to him. His only function at the moment is to sit in the crevice and speak in code. That is why the community has not been able to point to any purpose for him beyond a possible Easter egg.

Note: Bob’s role could expand in a later update, since the developers are still finalizing content after launch. For now, treat him as a curiosity rather than a step toward any reward.

If you have been searching for a trick, a code, or a specific dialogue choice that changes Bob’s behavior, there is nothing to miss. Reaching him, reading his translated lines, and moving on is the full extent of what Bob offers today.
