The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Find Saint Mihai’s Symbol in the Courtyard

The “A Monk and a Saint” quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker drops you in the cathedral courtyard with a vague instruction to search for Saint Mihai’s memorial stone, no exact marker, and a cluster of graves that Coen simply refuses to open. That is not a bug. The graves stay shut until Coen knows what Saint Mihai’s symbol actually looks like, and the game never spells that out.

Quick answer: Coen must first see Saint Mihai’s symbol — a scale — somewhere inside the cathedral complex, most quickly by inspecting the fresco of Mihai from the scaffolding. Then return to the courtyard graves north of the cathedral, brush the leaves off the second grave from the right, and inspect it to slide the stone open.

Why the courtyard graves won’t open

“A Monk and a Saint” starts on its own once you finish the Night Terrors side quest in Svartrau, and its description points you at the courtyard because Mihai’s crypt was left off the cathedral plans. Switch on Focus Mode (L2/LT) in the courtyard and you’ll see five graves light up. None of them can be interacted with in a meaningful way yet.

The gate on this objective is knowledge, not a key. Until Coen has seen Mihai’s symbol elsewhere, he cannot recognize it on a headstone, so there is no way to brute-force the puzzle by guessing which slab is the crypt entrance. Go and learn the symbol first, then come back.

Where to learn Saint Mihai’s symbol

Several places in the cathedral complex teach Coen the symbol, and any one of them is enough. They differ mainly in how much of your day they burn, which matters when the clock on rescuing your family is running.

The fresco route is the cheapest, so it is the one worth doing unless you have already stumbled into one of the others. The treasury route is the longest: you have to talk the boy guarding the storeroom into letting you in — paying him is the simplest option — grab the treasury key from the book inside, unlock the treasury, head downstairs, push the odd bookshelf aside, and rotate the goblet on the table until the scale lines up.

Getting inside the cathedral to see the fresco

Clear the courtyard and the area around the well first if you skipped the fighting during Night Terrors. Guards patrolling here will interrupt the climb, and you do not want to be dragged into a fight halfway up a wall.

Wait for night. Every ground-level door into the cathedral is locked, so the only entrance is the open tower on the roof, and you need your vampire traversal to reach it.

Use Shadowstep to teleport up the exterior walls until you reach the rooftop, then clawride down the inside of the open tower. Coen lands inside the nave with the doors still bolted behind him.

Take the prompts as they appear. On entry you are pushed to inspect the ceiling, the altar, and a book, which sets up the objective to investigate the cathedral from the scaffolding.

Shadowstep up the scaffolding on the left side and keep going to the last platform. The correct fresco is there — look at the book on the scaffold to trigger the inspect prompt, and the symbol is painted on Mihai’s armor in the image.

Note: the symbol is a set of scales. Once Coen has seen it, the courtyard graves become interactable.

Finding Saint Mihai’s memorial stone in the courtyard

Leave the cathedral through the side door and head out into the courtyard. If you entered through the roof, the interior doors can now be opened from the inside.

Go down the stairs, turn right, and follow the path along the alleyway. The distance counter on the objective marker ticks down as you close in on the burial ground.

Open the iron gate and step into the walled graveyard on the north side of the cathedral. Turn on Focus Mode and the five buried slabs will glow yellow.

Head for the second grave from the right. Starting at the slab in the bottom right corner and moving one to the left puts you on the correct stone immediately.

Press the inspect input (F on keyboard) so Coen sweeps the leaves off the slab. The Latin lettering underneath becomes readable, and the scale appears at the centre of the stone.

Inspect the symbol itself. Coen calls it out loud, the stone slides aside on its own, and a shaft down into the crypt opens beneath it.

How to tell it worked

Two things confirm the objective cleared. Coen speaks the line identifying the symbol, and a QUEST UPDATED banner fires with the tracker rolling over to entering the crypt. The slab itself physically moves, leaving an opening you can climb into.

If nothing happens when you interact with a grave, the cause is almost always one of two things. Either Coen has not yet seen the symbol anywhere in the complex, in which case go back and inspect the fresco, the annals, the thief’s note, or the goblet. Or you are standing on the wrong slab — count again from the right-hand side of the plot.

Down in the crypt, take the first door on the left and use Focus Mode to spot the cracked section of the left wall where the noise is coming from. Inspecting it has Coen dig through, which frees Mihai and starts the fight against Mihai, Patron of the Cathedral — a straightforward swordsman with a deep health pool, best attempted around level 25. Clearing him hands over the Broken Sword of St. Mihai, 1,000 XP, and a skill point, plus the Broken Chains and Worn Sheath quest items sitting in the boss room, and it opens up the Forge It Anew questline to put the blade back together.
