In the Name of the Father is the Svartrau City quest that decides whether Father Florin becomes an ally or a corpse. It runs entirely inside the city, ends in a sermon held in tunnels under a house, and feeds directly into A Hero’s End. It is also missable, so it is worth knowing exactly how it opens before you burn time segments wandering the cathedral district.
Quick answer: Enter Svartrau Cathedral during the day, agree to Father Florin’s confession, confess wrath, envy, and gluttony, then pick “Tell me more.” Head to the house he names on the west side of the city, drop through the floor into the tunnels, and hear out his offer to finish the quest and unlock A Hero’s End.

There are two openings. The clean one is a conversation. The messy one is a break-in that skips the dialogue entirely and hands you a fight instead.

Getting inside the house on the west side of Svartrau City
The marker points west, along the road north of the West Gate. If you came from the confession, a beggar at the front door waves you through and nothing turns hostile. If you found the place on your own, expect the opposite reception.

Search the ruins under the house
The underground stretch is linear and hard to get lost in. Follow the corridor to a ladder, climb down, and take the stairs on the left. Cross the large chamber ahead and use the door to the left of the stone statue. From there, a candlelit path leads straight to Florin, mid-sermon, with his congregation gathered around him.

Tip: sweep the chests and containers along the way. The route holds food, balms, and crafting recipes that are easy to walk past while chasing the marker.
The congregation spots Coen and moves on him, but Florin calls them off before it turns into a fight. He then explains his position — Brencis is an abomination, and he wants him destroyed — and offers Coen a way to make that happen.
Father Florin’s offer: All three choices compared
| Choice | Immediate result | Ancient key |
|---|---|---|
| Accept his offer | He sets you an ancient trial and advises preparing first. Speak to him again afterward to receive the key. | Handed to you |
| Refuse and leave | He is disappointed but does not turn hostile. You can return later and accept. | On a barrel beside the ruins door |
| Attack him | Coen stabs Florin to death, then has to kill every beggar in the chamber. | Loot it from his body |
Note: the trial itself is not gated behind the friendly answer. All three outcomes leave a route to the ancient key, so A Hero’s End can begin either way. What killing Florin removes is the alliance — and the perk that comes with it.
How to confirm the quest is complete
The confirmation is unmissable. Once the conversation in the sanctuary resolves, In the Name of the Father is marked complete and A Hero’s End appears in its place, alongside 250 XP and 1 SP. Using the ancient key on the northern door hands the transition over formally and starts the trial in the ruins beyond it.
If the quest never appeared in your log in the first place, the cause is almost always one of two things. Either the confession was cut short — the trigger only fires after all three sins and the “Tell me more.” follow-up — or you approached the house before speaking to Florin, in which case there is no marker and no invitation, only the back door and a fight.
What siding with Father Florin unlocks later
An alliance with Florin is worth more than the quest reward suggests, and you can form it before or after the trial. He gives Coen a secret knock for a side door into Greifberg Castle, which skips the heavy defenses at the main entrance and drops you close to the interior. That shortcut leads into A Lone Wolf’s Hunt and the final confrontation with Brencis.
The trial in the ruins is not trivial. Level 15 or higher is a reasonable benchmark, and the shrine in the same room lets you spend skill points and shift the time of day before you commit. Beating Rigoz, The Betrayed Hero at the end of it yields the Ancient Hero’s Armour, a golden brooch, and the recipe for Potent Balm of Fortitude, with Hands of Fate and Erkas’s Sword sitting further along the same thread.
Killing Florin still gets you into the trial, and other allies can open other doors into the castle. But it closes the cheapest route to Brencis in a game where every spent time segment counts, which makes hearing him out the lower-risk answer even if you have no intention of trusting him.
