Bone Fragments are the material that gates most of your early gear progress in Valheim. They upgrade your first Leather set, they finish your first cape, and later they turn into a tower shield, a bone bow, and even a cartography table. The item itself is plain enough — “A pile of shattered bones,” weight 0.5, stacks to 50, and it travels through portals — but getting a steady supply means knowing which enemies and which dungeons actually hand them over.
Quick answer: Kill Skeletons in the Black Forest — they guard Burial Chamber and Troll Cave entrances and drop Bone Fragments at a 100 percent rate. A one-star Skeleton gives 1, two-star gives 2, three-star gives 4.
Farming Bone Fragments from Black Forest Skeletons
The Black Forest run is the fastest reliable source in the early game, and you do not need to go underground for it. Skeletons stand watch outside Burial Chambers and other points of interest, so you can farm the exteriors first and save the dungeon crawl for when your gear catches up.
Exact drop amounts per enemy
Every one of these drops is guaranteed, so the only variable is which enemy you are fighting and what star level it rolled. Rancid Remains in the Swamp are worth three times what a Skeleton is at the same level, which is why crypt runs start paying off once you can survive them.

Every location that yields Bone Fragments
Skeletons are the headline source, but bones are scattered across four biomes, and two of those options involve no combat at all. If you have not beaten the Black Forest yet, the Meadows route is the safe way to get your first stack.

The Meadows option is worth spelling out. Once Eikthyr is down you can craft an antler pickaxe, and that lets you dig into the boat-shaped burial mounds ringed by upright stones. Alongside the bones you will turn up arrows, feathers, and valuables you can sell to Haldor later.
Evil Bone Piles and what respawns
Evil Bone Piles are the skeleton spawners. They sit inside Burial Chambers and turn up occasionally in the Swamp, and as long as one is intact it will keep producing skeletons for you to farm. Camping a spawner is the closest thing to an unlimited source in the game.
The catch is numbers. Skeletons pile up faster than you expect, and they climb in star level, so bring a shield and something with reach or area damage before you park yourself next to a spawner. The Stagbreaker is popular for exactly this reason — it hits groups in tight corridors.
Note: the loose bone piles you smash for loot do not come back. The skeletons that spawn do. If you want a location you can return to, mark the Burial Chambers and Sunken Crypts on your map and leave the spawners alone.
What Bone Fragments are used for
Crafting is only half the story. Bone Fragments also feed upgrades, which is where most players burn through their first few stacks without noticing. The Club, the Leather helmet, tunic and pants, the Deer hide cape, the Stagbreaker, the Troll leather helmet and the Troll hide cape all consume fragments when you level them at a workbench.

The capes and the Troll leather helmet need a Workbench at level 2, so upgrade your bench before you plan a big farming trip. Spinesnap is the outlier at 40 fragments, and it is the reason a lot of players go back to the Black Forest long after they have moved on from it.
