The workbench is the first crafting station you build in Valheim, and it stays useful for the entire run. Level 1 covers rags, a stone axe, and a crude bow. Level 2 is where flint gear and the first round of equipment upgrades appear, and it costs almost nothing to reach.
Quick answer: Build a Chopping Block (10 Wood, 10 Flint) with your Hammer and place it within two meters of the workbench. The bench jumps to level 2 the moment the piece is placed.
Materials needed for the Chopping Block
Both materials come from the starting Meadows biome, so no boss kill and no travel is required. You also need a Hammer, which costs 3 Wood and 2 Stone.
| Material | Amount | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | 10 | Chop any Meadows tree, or grab loose branches and stumps |
| Flint | 10 | Pick up from the ground along rivers, lakes, and shorelines |
Flint is not mined and cannot be chopped out of anything. It sits loose on the ground as pale, almost white oval stones, and you collect it by walking over it or interacting with it. Anywhere fresh water meets land in the Meadows is a reliable spot, and shorelines usually have enough for both this upgrade and the Tanning Rack later.

Tip: Flint stacks quickly, so gather 25 in one trip. That covers the Chopping Block now and most of the Tanning Rack cost afterwards.

Leave breathing room on the other sides of the bench. Each of the four upgrade pieces needs its own clear connection path, so lining them all up along one wall will cause the later ones to block each other.
How to confirm the workbench is level 2
Interact with the workbench and check the level number shown in the crafting menu. It should read level 2 immediately, with no crafting time or confirmation prompt involved.
The recipe list is the second check. Flint gear such as the Flint Axe, Flint Knife, Flint Spear, and Flinthead Arrow becomes available, along with the Stagbreaker, and the Upgrade tab now offers a second tier for eligible tools, weapons, and armor.
One thing that has not changed: the bench still needs a roof and roughly 70 percent cover to craft or repair anything. Building structures and suppressing monster spawns inside the radius works without cover, but the crafting menu will refuse to open if the bench is exposed.
Why the upgrade does not register
If the Chopping Block is built but the bench still shows level 1, the cause is almost always placement. Run through these before rebuilding anything.
| Symptom | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Level stays at 1 after placing | The Chopping Block is more than two meters away. Remove it with the middle mouse button and rebuild it closer. |
| No dotted light line appears | The connection path is blocked, often by another upgrade piece. Move it to a different side of the bench. |
| Second Chopping Block does nothing | Duplicate upgrades do not stack. One of each piece is the maximum per bench. |
| An upgrade shows in red text | You have the materials, but the bench level is still too low for that item tier. |
| A new bench elsewhere is level 1 | Upgrades apply only to the bench they are connected to. Every additional workbench starts fresh. |
Note: a single upgrade piece can serve more than one workbench if two benches are close enough, which is worth knowing when you build a dense crafting room.
What level 2 changes at your base
Beyond recipes, each workbench level adds four meters to the build radius. A fresh bench covers 20 meters, level 2 covers 24, and a fully upgraded bench reaches 36 meters at level 5. That radius is also the zone where monsters will not spawn, so a bigger circle means fewer unwanted visitors inside your walls.
The upgrade tier matters just as much. Every bench level lets eligible gear be improved one step further, adding durability, and adding damage or armor on weapons and armor pieces. Repairs remain free at any level.
The remaining workbench upgrades
The same two-meter placement rule applies to all four pieces, so leave space around the bench now rather than tearing down walls later.
| Level | Structure | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Chopping Block | 10 Wood, 10 Flint |
| 3 | Tanning Rack | 10 Wood, 15 Flint, 20 Leather Scraps, 5 Deer Hide |
| 4 | Adze | 10 Finewood, 3 Bronze |
| 5 | Tool Shelf | 10 Finewood, 4 Iron, 4 Obsidian |
Clearing a shoreline of flint early is the single cheapest power spike in the opening hours of Valheim. Ten of it turns a starter bench into a station that produces flint weapons and upgraded leather armor, and the leftovers go straight into the Tanning Rack for level 3.
