Valheim: How to Get Ancient Seeds and Summon The Elder

Where Ancient Seeds drop in the Black Forest, how many you need, and what to do with them at the altar.

Where Ancient Seeds drop in the Black Forest, how many you need, and what to do with them at the altar.

Ancient Seeds are the key item that wakes up Valheim’s second boss. They only exist in the Black Forest, they cannot be crafted, and they cannot be planted despite the name. If you are stuck at the stone altar with an empty bowl, the seeds are the one thing standing between you and The Elder.

Quick answer: Find a Greydwarf Nest — the campfire-shaped spawner wrapped in purple glow — and smash it. Every destroyed nest drops exactly one Ancient Seed. Collect three, then burn them in the bowl at The Elder’s altar.

Ancient Seed item details and how many you need

The seed is classified as a key item, so it sits in your inventory as a quest-style object rather than a crafting material you can mass produce. It weighs almost nothing and stacks high, which means your entire boss budget fits in a single slot.

PropertyValue
Item typeKey
Weight1
Max stack50
Item codeAncientSeed
DescriptionHeld against your ear, you hear tiny whisperings within…

Three seeds summon The Elder, and each rematch costs another three under the same rule. There is no cooldown and no separate rematch item. If you also want the Heart of the Forest trinket, budget five more on top of that.

What you wantSeeds to reserve
First Elder summon3
Each Elder rematch3 more
Heart of the Forest5 (plus 5 Bronze and a Greydwarf Shaman Trophy at a Forge)
One summon plus one Heart8

Note: don’t spend seeds on the Heart until the three for your summon are safely set aside. The seeds are destroyed when you offer them, and there is no way to craft replacements.

Where Ancient Seeds drop: nests and Greydwarf Brutes

Two things in the world hand over Ancient Seeds. Greydwarf Nests give one on destruction, no dice roll involved. Greydwarf Brutes can drop them too, but the amount and the odds both scale with the creature’s star level.

SourceSeedsDrop chance
Greydwarf Nest (destroyed)1100%
Greydwarf Brute (0-star)1~33%
Greydwarf Brute (1-star)2~66%
Greydwarf Brute (2-star)4100%

Greydwarf Shamans are not a seed source. They drop the Greydwarf Shaman Trophy along with eyes, wood, resin, and Bukeberries, so killing them counts toward the Heart of the Forest recipe and nothing else. Ordinary Greydwarves drop nothing useful here either. Chests in Black Forest ruins are not a route worth planning around — nests and Brutes are the supported sources.

How to destroy a Greydwarf Nest for a guaranteed seed

Bring a weapon and something with reach. A Club or Stone Axe will break the nest structure fine, and a bow is worth carrying for the Greydwarves that pour out while you swing. Craft what you need at a workbench before you leave.

Head into the Black Forest and watch the tree line for a purple glow. The nest looks like a small bonfire wrapped in violet mist, and the constant guttural noise of nearby Greydwarves usually gives away the location before you see it.

Clear the Greydwarves standing around it first, or at least keep them off your back. The nest keeps producing enemies while you attack it, and a stray Troll wandering in is the usual reason an easy trip turns fatal.
Hit the nest structure until it breaks. The seed drops on the ground where the nest stood — pick it up and check your inventory for an item called Ancient Seed with the “tiny whisperings” description. That is your confirmation it worked.

Destroyed nests do not come back. That is the tradeoff worth thinking about before you swing.

Farm Brutes by leaving the nest standing

If you need more than a couple of seeds, an intact nest is worth more than the single seed inside it. The spawner keeps cycling as long as you stay in range and keep the area clear, and every Brute it produces is another chance at a drop.

Nest behaviorDetail
Activation rangeWithin 60 meters of you
Spawn attemptEvery 12 seconds
Spawn placementRoughly 4 meters from the nest
Spawn mix72% Greydwarf, 14% Shaman, 14% Brute
Blocked when3 Greydwarfs remain within 20 meters
Disabled whenRoofed over within about 4 meters
Star chances15% one-star, 2.25% two-star

Crowding is the thing that quietly ruins a farm. Leave three Greydwarfs standing nearby and the nest simply stops trying, so clear kills as they happen instead of letting bodies pile up. Building a roof over the spawner to shelter yourself will switch it off entirely.

You will see a theoretical figure of 0.37 seeds per minute, or about 22 per hour, quoted for a continuously running nest. Treat that as a ceiling. It assumes uninterrupted spawning and ignores travel, combat, failed drop rolls, and the time you spend clearing the area.

The rule of thumb is simple. Need one or two seeds right now? Break the nest and move on. Need eight for a summon plus the Heart of the Forest? Keep one nest alive and grind Brutes.

How to use Ancient Seeds at The Elder’s altar

The altar is a stone structure with four pillars and a burning bowl in the middle, and it sits somewhere in the Black Forest. To pin it on your map, read a red-inscribed runestone — these show up in Burial Chambers and near ruined stone towers. Reading the right one marks the altar location. You can also stumble onto the site without ever finding a runestone.

Put the seeds in your hotbar, walk up to the bowl, and offer all three. The sky darkens and the ground shakes as The Elder rises — that is your confirmation the sacrifice registered. The seeds are consumed permanently.

If nothing happens, the cause is almost always the count. The bowl needs all three seeds, not one or two. Clear nearby Greydwarves before you summon as well, since anything hostile in the area will be pulled into the fight.

Beating The Elder drops the Swamp Key, which opens Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome, plus a trophy that speeds up tree chopping when mounted.

Storing and moving Ancient Seeds

Ancient Seeds pass through a standard wood portal, so there is no need to sail a boat or drag a cart across the map just to bring them home. A labeled chest near your portal hub or Forge is enough; no special container is required. Note that this portal rule covers the seeds themselves, not every other material in the Heart of the Forest recipe.

And to settle the obvious question: you cannot plant them. A Cultivator will not accept them, they will not grow into anything, and no recipe produces them. Once they burn in the bowl, the only way to get more is another trip into the Black Forest.

Testing something on a private world is the one exception. With cheats enabled by typing devcommands in the F5 console, spawn AncientSeed will produce the item directly.

Three seeds and a marked altar are all the boss fight actually requires. The longer job is deciding whether the nest in front of you is worth one guaranteed drop or a steady stream of Brutes, and that answer changes depending on whether you are here for The Elder alone or planning the Heart of the Forest as well.
