Bears, sometimes called Bjorns, are one of the toughest wildlife threats in the Black Forest. They carry high health and hit hard enough to drop an underprepared Viking in two or three swings, but they also fear fire. Beat them the right way and you walk off with the materials for the Bear armor set, a fist weapon, and a guaranteed regen boost.
Quick answer: Hit a bear with a lit torch to keep it burning and fleeing, kill at least four to collect 15 Bear Hide, 2 Bear Paw, and 1 Bear Trophy, then craft the Headdress, Patterns, and Loincloth of the Bear at a Workbench.
Where bears spawn in Valheim
Bears live in the Black Forest biome. Spawn rates are low, and they most often appear along the border where the Black Forest meets a Meadows biome. You can also run into one deep inside the forest itself, so stay alert while gathering.
Only one bear spawns per Black Forest biome per day. Time of day also changes what you face. A 1-star bear appears during the day, while a stronger 2-star bear roams at night. Because respawns are slow, the fastest way to farm is to kill one bear and then travel to a different stretch of forest rather than waiting for another to appear in the same spot.
Best way to fight bears
Bears resist Pierce damage and take extra harm from Fire and Slash. That combination makes fire the single most reliable tool against them.
Simply holding a torch makes a bear panic, which lowers how often it attacks and opens up windows to hit back. Strike it with the torch and it starts burning and runs away in fear, giving you a very safe melee approach. Carry several torches, since durability drains as you keep swinging.
A bow with fire arrows is arguably even safer because you can kite the bear while it burns. The catch is that most arrows deal Pierce damage, which bears resist, so you lose a chunk of your damage output and waste ammo. It works fine if you have arrows to spare, but the torch route is cheaper.
Two positioning tricks make kills cleaner. If you can bait a bear onto lower ground, stand above it and attack from the ledge where it struggles to reach you. Alternatively, build a small wooden box enclosure with a Workbench inside to keep it standing, trap the bear, and place campfires underneath to burn it down safely.
Bear drops and how much you need
A defeated bear leaves behind meat, hide, and paws, plus a rare Bear Trophy. A single 0-star bear drops the amounts below, and the trophy only appears about 10% of the time, so expect to hunt several before one drops.

A full Quality 1 set needs 15 Bear Hide, so you must kill at least four bears for the hide alone, plus enough runs to secure two Bear Paw and one Bear Trophy.
Tip: If the trophy refuses to drop, there is a guaranteed source. Haldor the merchant keeps a bearskin rug at his camp in the Black Forest. Break the rug and you collect a Bear Trophy without any luck involved.
Bear armor set crafting recipes
All three pieces are crafted at a Workbench, starting at Workbench level 2. Blueberries fill out the chest and legs, so plant or gather bushes before you commit to the full build. Here are the base Quality 1 costs.

Armor value and durability by quality
Each piece scales the same way when upgraded, adding 2 armor per tier. The full set caps at 39 armor at Quality 4, which sits above the Troll set but below Bronze armor.

The Berserk set effect
Wearing all three pieces at once activates the Berserk bonus. It trades some physical protection for faster recovery, which rewards an aggressive hit-and-heal playstyle. Chop damage, one of the bonuses, applies to trees and structures, so the set doubles as a woodcutting boost.

Like other fist weapons, they swing quickly, use two-hit combos, and hold up well thanks to high durability. Their standout trait is defense. The Paws carry a 6x parry bonus, parry at zero stamina cost, and reward precise timing, making them strong for parry-heavy fighters.
Between the fire tactics, the guaranteed trophy from Haldor’s rug, and the regen-focused Berserk bonus, hunting bears pays off well for its early spot in the tech tree. Pair the set with the Paws of the Bear and you have a self-sustaining melee kit ready long before you tackle The Elder.
