The Hall of Murmurs sits under Castigator’s Keep in the Mammon region, and it takes about three minutes to clear. Its name promises something elaborate. It delivers a short canyon, a handful of brigands, a shack with a fireplace, and one enemy that only wakes up when you touch its loot. Players have spent hours hitting walls and testing items in here looking for a deeper mechanic, which is the main reason the place has a reputation at all.
Quick answer: Ride the elevator down, kill the shielded brigands with heavy attacks, break the illusory wall on the right for roughly 700 coins, then enter the shack, take the coin pouches and the Laterite from the fireplace, and kill the Foul Knight that spawns when you grab it. That completes the dungeon.
Hall of Murmurs location in Castigator’s Keep
Getting to Castigator’s Keep requires enough Ova to cleanse the corruption blocking the second jump pad at Marrow Keep. Cleansing beacons or beating bosses in Fainweald will cover that. Once the black gunk is gone, take the jump pad to the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon.
From there it is a straight run south. Head for the blasted gate with the large group of soldiers, follow the bridge to its end, use the bone gate to jump the gap, then stay on the main road until Castigator’s Keep appears.

The keep’s beacon sits on the gate battlement, reached by climbing the wooden scaffolding. Activate it before you go any further, because it is the closest respawn point to the dungeon and the only checkpoint you will get down there.
From the beacon, enter the inner gate (or take the cliffside path if this is your first visit), then take the stairs on the far right. Follow that path until you reach the Grisha Hunter camp and turn left. The entrance is set into the ground, a set of stairs descending underground rather than a doorway, which is why people run past it.

Full Hall of Murmurs reward list
| Reward | Where it is |
|---|---|
| 500 Coins | Caged box, left of the shack doorway |
| 250 Coins | Behind the first coin pouch |
| ~700 Coins | Behind the illusory wall in the canyon |
| Laterite | In front of the fireplace, by the praying husk |
| Gloom and gold | Dropped by the Foul Knight |
The Laterite is a forge material, so triggering the Foul Knight is worth doing rather than leaving the pickup alone. There are no chests and no traps in here, and no named boss, so you do not need to prepare for a set-piece fight before dropping in.
Why players think the Hall of Murmurs has a hidden puzzle
The layout invites suspicion. A passive NPC kneeling in prayer, a blood trail, a name built around sound, and an elevator with no visible floor beneath it all read like setup for a mechanic. Mortal Shell 2 rewards that instinct elsewhere, which is exactly why so many people have refused to accept that this room is just a room.
None of the obvious experiments produce a result. Playing the Troubadour’s Lute for the praying figure does nothing, and neither does switching songs. Night Mode changes nothing about the layout. Summoning with the Grisha Remnant, using the Sheephead Totem, and shouting with the Cursed Child all fall flat. Following the blood trail leads nowhere, and luring the brigands into the shack has no effect.
Two oddities keep the theory alive. Gloom dropped on death has been seen spawning behind a wall in the next room over, and a lightning attack has been reported damaging an enemy through a wall. Both are more consistent with loose collision than with a designed secret. The illusory wall in the canyon is the only genuine hidden area anyone has confirmed, and it holds coins.
Note: If you have swung at every surface and nothing opened, look specifically at the wall right of where you first meet the shielded brigands, directly across from the blocked door. It is easy to miss because the mark blends into the rock.
How to confirm the dungeon is complete
Killing the Foul Knight is the completion trigger. Once it dies, the dungeon has no remaining objective, and you can use the Mark Complete option on the map entry to keep your own tracking tidy. The area itself has no map, so the entry is the only record you get.
The praying figure respawns if you leave and come back in, which has fed a fair bit of the puzzle speculation. That respawn is not a reset condition for a hidden state, and the Laterite does not come back with it.
Nothing here gates story progress. If you stumble into the entrance early, you can walk away and return whenever without losing access to anything, and clearing it only matters for regional completion and the coins.
