A wanted level in GTA 5 stays active as long as the police can see you. The whole system runs on line of sight, so the fastest way to shed those stars is to break contact and stay hidden until they give up the search.
Quick answer: Get into a vehicle, drive out of the police search zone without being spotted, then stay hidden until the stars stop flashing and vanish from the HUD.
How the wanted system tracks you
The police need to physically see you to keep the chase alive. Your minimap tells you their status in real time. When the map is flashing red and blue, the police currently have eyes on you and the stars stay solid.
Once you break their view for long enough, the stars start flashing. That flashing means the police have switched to search mode and no longer know your exact position. Stay out of sight through this phase and the stars clear on their own.
The area the police are searching also shows on the minimap, so your goal is always to move outside that zone before they relocate you.
Break line of sight and hide
Get in a car and put distance between yourself and the pursuit while avoiding their cones of vision. Then duck into a spot they cannot reach or see. These locations work reliably, and the higher your wanted level, the more you want something that blocks helicopters too.

Heading off-road into the countryside is one of the most dependable escapes. Police vehicles stay on marked roads and paths, so a car that can climb hills, or a 4×4, lets you leave them behind while they circle the roads below.
Train tunnels are the classic fix at higher stars. Helicopters cannot spot you underground, and any patrol car that does enter loses the ability to surround you. Just listen for approaching trains, which are loud enough to give you time to move.
Switching into a new car while the police cannot see you drops your wanted level significantly. The player arrow on your minimap turns grey when you are undetected, meaning the police will not recognize you even if they drive past.
Clear your wanted level at Los Santos Customs
Los Santos Customs can wipe your stars, but only if you get inside unseen. If the police watch you drive in, the shop will not clear the wanted level.
Beating helicopters at 3 stars and higher
Helicopters appear at higher wanted levels and will spot you even with a building or container between you and them. Cover and crouching alone will not shake them, so you need to remove the aircraft or get underground.
- Duck into a tunnel or under an overpass to block the helicopter’s view entirely.
- Lose the ground cars first, then get out and shoot down the helicopter by killing the pilot.
- Take a fast plane and fly high or head out over the ocean until the coast clears.
- Submerge yourself or a vehicle in water; the police are not set up for underwater pursuit.
At 4 stars a SWAT team arrives in SUVs, and a second helicopter can appear, making the same tactics harder but still valid. After you down a helicopter, hide somewhere a fresh one cannot immediately see you and watch the radar for cops closing in.
Shooting down a police helicopter at 3 stars can sometimes push you to 4 stars, so only do it once you have space to escape afterward.
GTA Online: Call Lester to remove the stars
In GTA Online, Lester can strip your wanted level for you. Open your phone, go to Contacts, and select Lester, then choose the option to remove your wanted level. It costs a fee, or it is free once you have completed The Doomsday Heist.
This service is not always available. It is generally limited to free roam sessions and will not work during missions, so treat it as a free-roam tool rather than a mission escape.
How to know you are clear
You are safe once the stars stop flashing and disappear from the HUD, and the minimap is no longer flashing red and blue. Until then the search is still active, and stepping back into a patrol’s view can restart the whole chase. Watch the radar during the flashing phase and keep still or keep moving quietly until the icons fade for good.
