Valheim: How to Get the Swamp Key

Defeating The Elder in the Black Forest is the only way to open the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome.

Defeating The Elder in the Black Forest is the only way to open the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome.

The Swamp Key is the item that gates Valheim’s entire iron tier. Without it, the locked gates on Sunken Crypts stay shut, and farming Scrap Iron in the Swamp is close to impossible. There is exactly one way to obtain it, and it runs through the game’s second boss.

Quick answer: Summon The Elder at a Forsaken Altar in the Black Forest using 3x Ancient Seed, then kill it. The Swamp Key drops on the ground along with The Elder Trophy.

What you need before summoning The Elder

The altar itself is easy to reach once you know where it is. Surviving the fight is the harder part, so bring the following:

  • 3x Ancient Seed, dropped by Greydwarf Brutes and found in Greydwarf nests
  • A bow with Fire Arrows (fire deals double damage to The Elder); Bronze arrows also work
  • Bronze armor, or an upgraded Troll Leather set if you want speed over protection
  • A melee weapon such as a Bronze Sword for the Greydwarves that join in
  • High-health food like Honey, Queens Jam, and Sausages

You should have already killed Eikthyr before attempting this. The Hard Antler it drops becomes the Antler Pickaxe, which is what lets you mine the Tin and Copper needed for bronze gear.

Summon and defeat The Elder in the Black Forest

Explore the Black Forest and look for half-circle Rune Stones. They sit near ruined towers and other surface structures, and also appear inside Burial Chambers underground.
Interact with a Rune Stone. This marks the location of The Elder’s Forsaken Altar on your map. The altar can be a long way off, sometimes on a completely different island, so plan the trip and build a portal or two along the way.

At the altar, drop the 3x Ancient Seed into the fire. The Elder will rise, and the boss health bar labelled “THE ELDER” appears at the top of the screen.
Fight from range and use the four stone columns ringing the altar as cover. The Elder’s vines cannot punch through them, so you can duck behind a column to regain stamina, eat, or nock another arrow.
Keep firing Fire Arrows whenever you are not dodging. The boss moves slowly, so hitting it is straightforward. Around 70 to 100 arrows is a realistic budget for a solo kill.

When Greydwarves start chasing you, stop and cut them down with your melee weapon instead of running. Circling the boss with adds on your heels is what usually gets players killed here.

Confirm the Swamp Key is in your inventory

When the last hit lands, the screen reads “The Elder has been felled” and the body bursts in a pink cloud, scattering loot across the ground. Walk over the pile to pick everything up.

You are looking for two confirmations in the message feed: “Added Swamp Key” and “Added The Elder Trophy”. Open your inventory and the key should be there, described as “Made of swampy stuff. Slimy, but hard. Opens crypts.”

Take The Elder Trophy back to the starting altar where you first spawned and sacrifice it there. That grants the boss power, which speeds up tree chopping and wood gathering.

Using the Swamp Key on Sunken Crypts

The key has exactly one function. In the Swamp biome, look for a stone structure with green torches flanking the entrance and an iron gate blocking the way in. Walk up to the gate with the key in your inventory and it opens.

The key is not a consumable, so it stays with you after every unlock, and a crypt you have opened remains open permanently. In multiplayer, only one person in the group needs to carry a key to get everyone inside.

Sunken Crypt density depends on your world seed and the size of the Swamp. Small swamps sometimes contain none at all, while a large one can hold two to four. Inside, the Muddy Scrap Piles are the real prize, since they yield the Scrap Iron you need for iron gear before taking on Bonemass. Chests add materials such as Amber, Amber pearl, Ancient bark, Chain, Coins, Entrails, Ironhead arrow, Ooze, Poison arrow, Ruby, Withered bone, and Yellow mushroom.

Bring Poison Resistance Mead. Crypts spawn Blobs that release poison gas, and the resulting damage over time adds up fast in cramped corridors.

One key is all you ever need, but The Elder can be summoned again with another three Ancient Seeds if a key is lost on a corpse you cannot recover, or if you simply want spares for the rest of your group.
