Obsidian is dark volcanic glass that only appears in the Mountain biome, and it is the gate between an ordinary bow build and the strongest specialty arrows in Valheim. It sits in plain sight on snowy slopes, which makes it far less painful to farm than Silver, but the deposits are hard enough that mid-game tools bounce off them completely.
Quick answer: Bring an Iron Pickaxe and frost resistance into the Mountain biome, then break the dark, squarish boulders scattered across the higher slopes. Each deposit drops several pieces of Obsidian.
Obsidian requirements: Iron Pickaxe and frost resistance
Two things block early access to Obsidian. The first is the pickaxe tier. A Bronze Pickaxe cannot scratch a deposit at all, and swinging one only produces a floating Too hard message. Only an Iron Pickaxe or better breaks the rock.
The second is the cold. Unprotected time in the Mountain biome applies the Freezing status and will kill you quickly.

If you are short on mead and capes, a chain of campfires up the slope gives you warm-up points to retreat to between deposits.
Where Obsidian deposits spawn in the Mountain biome
Obsidian forms boulder-like deposits sitting on the surface of Mountain slopes, and it becomes more common the higher up the peak you climb. Unlike Silver, there is nothing to dowse for. No Wishbone is involved, so the job is simply covering ground and looking down.
From a distance, a deposit can pass for an ordinary rock. Look for a blocky, squarish silhouette and a mottled black-and-grey surface that stands out sharply against the snow. Hovering the crosshair over the rock confirms the name before you commit to swinging.
Deposits are not the only source. Obsidian also turns up in loot chests inside Frost Caves, which generate in the same Mountain biome. That is a supplement rather than a farming route, so surface mining remains the reliable method.
Wolves and Drakes patrol these slopes, and Fenrings appear at night. Clear the area before you start mining, because a pickaxe swing leaves you wide open.
How to mine an Obsidian deposit without losing shards
How to confirm you picked up Obsidian
The first shard triggers a New material popup naming Obsidian, immediately followed by New crafting recipe notifications for Frost Arrow, Obsidian Arrow and Poison Arrow. Seeing those three names on screen is the confirmation that the pickup registered and the recipes are now permanently on your crafting list.
Finding Obsidian also unlocks the Tool Shelf, which is one of the workbench upgrades. If the arrow recipes appear greyed out at the workbench afterwards, the material is fine and the workbench level is the limiting factor.

Every arrow recipe produces 20 arrows per craft, which is why a single mining trip does not go as far as it looks. Workbench level rises by placing upgrade stations nearby, and the Chopping Block, Tanning Rack, Adze and Tool Shelf each add one level in any order.

Obsidian Arrows have no elemental effect, but they hit harder than standard arrows and are the sensible default ammunition. Poison Arrows deal 26 pierce damage plus 52 poison damage with 10 knockback, and the Ooze they need comes from Blobs and Oozers in the Swamp. Frost Arrows deal cold damage and are the usual answer to Surtlings, though the Freeze Gland requirement ties them to Drake kills in the same Mountain biome you mined the Obsidian in.
Carrying Obsidian back through portals
Obsidian is teleportable. Unlike Copper, Tin, Iron and Silver, it passes through portals without complaint, and it never needs smelting before use. That removes the whole boat-and-cart routine that makes metal runs so tedious.
The efficient setup is a small outpost at the base of your chosen mountain with a portal back to your main base and a few chests for overflow. Mine a slope, dump the load, and step through rather than hiking down with a full inventory.
