Scream And Run drops you into three separate horror settings, each with its own hunter and its own way out. The School and Play Place are key hunts, while the Mines swaps that for a crafting chain built around coal and explosives. Get the objective right for the map you loaded into and every escape becomes a repeatable routine rather than a panic.
Quick answer: School and Play Place open when you find five colored keys and use each on its matching padlock; Mines opens when you mine coal, fuel the furnace, then blow the rock exit with TNT and a lighter.

Controls you need before any run
Every map uses the same small set of inputs. Movement noise matters, so short bursts of running beat long sprints down open corridors where the monster wins.
| Action | Input | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Run | Shift | Short bursts to create distance |
| Crouch / crawl | C | Break line of sight and move quietly |
| Slide | Shift + C | Cross a doorway or corner fast |
| Flashlight | F | Dark rooms only; off during a chase |
| Interact | E | Search backpacks and operate locks or objectives |
Turn the flashlight off while you are being chased. The beam helps you read a dark room, but it also traces a line straight to your position.

The School is the most forgiving map, with a roughly square layout and dense key spawns. You play a trapped teacher hunting five colored keys — pink, green, yellow, red, and white — hidden inside black backpacks scattered through classrooms, hallways, the library, bathrooms, and the basement. There are around 30 backpacks and most return nothing, so you search systematically. Placement is randomized each round, so a bag that held a key last match may be empty now.

Dealing with the Cat in the Hat
The Cat in the Hat is fast and often quiet, and looking directly at him is the most dangerous thing you can do. Direct eye contact makes him accelerate and the chase becomes almost impossible to survive. Listen for his chuckle and silly tune, then duck into a classroom, drop to crouch in the far corner, and stay silent to break his line of sight. Rooms with two exits are worth more than dead-end classrooms.
If a teammate carrying a key is caught and killed, that key can vanish with them, which may make the round impossible for everyone else. Keep keys off reckless routes and bank them fast.
Escape the Mines and Dark Thomas
The Mines drops the key hunt entirely and replaces it with an ordered crafting chain through dark, maze-like tunnels with no map to guide you. Each stage unlocks the next, and the in-game prompt tells you when a requirement is met. Work in order and let the prompts, not a fixed count, tell you when to move on.

Dealing with Dark Thomas
Dark Thomas is a spider-legged train that never stops moving and will leave the tracks to keep chasing on eight legs. He is faster than you in a straight line, so never run flat-out down a corridor. When you hear the loud music and approaching train sounds, switch from searching to escaping immediately. Cut corners, keep rocks and tunnel walls between you, slide to break away, and duck under low openings only players can pass. Dead ends are effectively a death sentence, and staying silent matters even after you reach a room.
Escape Play Place and Ronald McDonald
Play Place, which creators sometimes call the Playground, is a dark multi-level indoor playground of slides, tunnels, ball pits, and party rooms. It runs the same five colored keys as the School, but adds one extra step: a screwdriver you use on a Gate Power Box to reach the lock area. Search soft-play structures, dining tables, and slide tubes for both the keys and the tool.

Dealing with Ronald McDonald
Ronald McDonald is unpredictable and becomes far more dangerous when the lights change or go dark. His footstep sounds give you a moment to react before a chase; if his music grows wilder he is speeding up, and if it fades or stops you have lost him. His hitbox is small, so if he corners you, wait for his lunge and dash to the side at the last second to juke him. Use crawl spaces and tight tunnels, since he struggles to follow through confined sections, and let teammates draw his attention while others work the objectives.

How to confirm each escape counted
Use the round’s own state to check progress rather than assuming. Each map has a clear finished condition and one thing to re-check if it stalls.
| Map | Completed state | Re-check if stuck |
|---|---|---|
| School | All five padlocks open and the door lets you through | Find the color whose lock is still closed |
| Mines | Rock obstruction clears after ignition and the opening is usable | Return to the last accepted furnace, TNT, or lighter prompt |
| Play Place | Gate powered, all five locks open, door opens | Check the screwdriver and power-box step first |
On the School route, a successful normal clear also awards the “Escape The Cat In The Hat” badge. When a run stops progressing, go back only to the last unfinished interaction rather than restarting: an empty backpack just means search another one, a closed furnace passage means keep the coal loop going, and rocks that remain after placement still need the lighter. Once that final prompt accepts, head for the exit and the map is done.
