Camping 101: Cooking is the short introductory quest that hands a character the one thing every campsite in World of Warcraft: Forever needs — a campfire. It is not a fetch quest or a kill quest. The objective is literally to learn the profession, so the whole thing is over in about a minute once you are standing in front of the right NPC.
Quick answer: Travel to Shen’dar Village, open the trainer window on Zerril Softbreeze, pay 1 silver to learn Apprentice Cooking, then talk to her again and click Complete Quest.
Quest objective and where to find Zerril Softbreeze
The quest log’s sole objective is to learn cooking from Zerril Softbreeze at Shen’dar Village. On the world map, the marker appears directly on the village, confirming that no hidden step or item collection comes first.

Zerril Softbreeze stands near the cooking area by the village buildings, at the end of the stone path that runs through the settlement. Her nameplate is tagged <Cook>, which is the fastest way to pick her out if the village is busy.

If the Complete Quest button is missing, you have not clicked Train yet. Buying the skill is the objective, so the turn-in only appears after Apprentice Cooking is learned.
How to confirm the quest worked
Three things change on completion. Cooking appears in your profession list at Apprentice rank, the Basic Campfire and the starter recipes show up in the cooking window, and the quest log entry disappears after the experience reward pops. If all three are true, the quest is done and you can leave the village.
What the Basic Campfire unlocks
The campfire is the reason this quest exists. In Forever, the old cooking fire becomes a campsite, and every other profession’s camp object requires a campfire nearby before it can be placed. No fire, no camp — which makes Cooking the skill that physically starts the whole system.
A campsite is also more than a buff pad. Sitting at one gives access to vendors, repairs, profession workspaces and hour-long stat buffs, so a group can restock and re-buff without walking back to a town.
Cooking is the only profession that keeps upgrading the fire itself, and each tier raises how many objects a camp can hold.
| Campfire | Cooking skill | Camp features held |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Campfire Kit | 1 | 3 |
| Journeyman Campfire Kit | 140 | 5 |
| Expert Campfire Kit | 220 | 10 |
The upgraded fires are taught through Blueprint recipes rather than a trainer, and those Blueprints drop from specific dungeon bosses. Note: camping numbers are still being tuned during the beta, which runs through October 21, 2026, so tiers and values can shift before launch.
Camping rules to know once you have the fire
- A camp requires multiple players because each person nearby may place only one object.
- Every camping feature has a 60-minute cooldown, while each stat buff remains active for that same hour.
- You have to sit or craft near the fire for about a minute before the buffs apply — running through does nothing.
- Camp buffs function as alternate forms of class buffs, so they cannot stack with the corresponding class buffs.
- Most professions learn their first camp object at skill 20; Cooking is the exception at skill 1.
The camp is also the natural place to top up a food buff. Eating while seated for 10 seconds grants Well Fed for 15 minutes, which carries a stat bonus plus 5% more experience from kills on the crafted foods shown so far.
The other Camping 101 quests
Cooking is one entry in a small family of introductory camping quests. The blacksmithing version, Camping 101: Blacksmithing, comes from Smith Argus and rewards the Sharpening Wheel along with 270 experience, and its text nudges you out of town because camps are not welcome in the middle of a settlement.
That pairing is the practical takeaway. Finish the cooking version for the fire, then push your main profession to skill 20 and pick up its own camp object, and you can set up a working campsite in the field the first time you group with someone else who did the same.
