Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 build of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was the first long, unbroken look at how the expansion actually plays. Two developers ran through a floating ruins region on Seikret back, hunted a pack-leading Bird Wyvern, dropped into a cave to fight Khezu, and closed with a multiplayer Teostra quest. Along the way they showed off the systems that change the moment-to-moment hunt: the Boost Bracer, instant weapon swapping on foot, and updraft gliding.

Quick answer: The demo covered two hunts — Araketa and Teostra — plus a Khezu encounter, and demonstrated Boost State, mid-combat weapon swapping without a Seikret, and updraft gliding in the new sky locale.

Skybound Eyrie traversal: gliding, updrafts, and the Seikret

The expansion’s new locale is the Skybound Eyrie, a region of floating landmasses and ancient ruins revealed after the mist above Wyveria clears. The Japanese demo build labeled its floating ruins zone 雲の遺跡群, or Cloud Ruins. What matters for play is the shape of it: tall cliffs, wide grassy plateaus, long gaps between islands, and dark cavern systems underneath.

The Seikret does the heavy lifting. Riding off a ledge starts a glide that can cross a full chasm, and there is a faster glide mode for covering distance. Updrafts scattered across the map push the mount straight up, letting you gain serious altitude in a second rather than riding a path around. The demo used that loop constantly — glide down to a lower island, find a current, ride it back up.

Smaller interactions fill in the gaps. The hunter used binoculars to spot a Komarimotto and caught it with a capture net, fired the slinger at a flock of Menmao to scatter them, and picked up a rolling shelled creature called a Ganron to throw at a monster mid-fight.

Araketa

Araketa is the new Bird Wyvern of the Skybound Eyrie, nicknamed the Jetstream Wyvern. An organ in its wings stores and releases air, which powers jet-like forward dashes and high-speed flight over long distances. It travels in groups: a large blue alpha and a set of smaller yellow followers that attack in unison when the leader calls. That turns the fight into crowd management as much as a duel — the demo’s hunter had to break up group charges while still building damage on the boss individual.

Khezu

Khezu turned up in a dark cavern reached by gliding across a canyon. It brings back the classics — clinging to the ceiling, stretching its neck out at you, and running electricity through its body. It also sends current along the wet cave floor, which slinger pods can interrupt by flinching it. The new one to watch for is a grab: Khezu swallows the hunter whole, triggering a struggle prompt before spitting them back out.

Teostra

The demo’s second quest was a straight Teostra slaying hunt, starting from a volcanic base camp with other hunters already engaged. The Emperor of Flame uses sweeping fire breath and blast explosions, and the fight ends in an enraged phase built around large fire detonations. Capcom has placed Teostra in the Oilwell Basin in the expansion, with attacks tuned up from its earlier appearances.

That fight doubled as a weapon showcase. The Heavy Bowgun’s Overcharge compresses ammo into far more destructive shots at the cost of heavy recoil, and a sustained beam-like shot was what finally knocked Teostra down. Swapping to Sword and Shield brought out Blade Medicine Slash, which lets attacks heal the hunter, plus a fast whetstone sharpen that works as an attack in the middle of a combo.

Araketa and Teostra sit alongside the rest of the confirmed roster: the colossal Lao-Shan Lung whose arrival kicks off the story, the wind-shielded Kushala Daora, and the new storm-wreathed Elder Dragon Gundoraja, the Black Sky’s Wrath.

Boost Bracer and Boost State explained

The Boost Bracer is new equipment that runs through the Slinger. You spend the boost gauge on a Boost Activation Action, which triggers a Boost Driver attack meant to open the monster up, and that puts you into a temporary Boost State. While it is active, your weapon behaves differently.

  • Certain existing actions are temporarily strengthened
  • New boosted combos and follow-up attacks become available
  • Guarding is improved
  • Boost can be activated out of some actions rather than from neutral

All 14 weapon types get their own boosted actions built around their existing strengths. The Great Sword segment of the demo showed the pattern clearly: enter Boost State, then spend a knockdown window on heavy charged hits fed by the gauge. A boost jump was also used to mount Teostra and land repeated shield bashes on its head.

Fast weapon swapping and the free 2.0 update changes

You still carry two weapons, but you no longer need to climb onto the Seikret to switch between them. The demo swapped a Great Sword for a Switch Axe on foot, instantly, mid-fight, and later went from Heavy Bowgun to Sword and Shield during the Teostra hunt. Equipment can also be changed from the Item Box without entering a tent, and loadouts can be adjusted during a hunt.

Those refinements are part of a free 2.0 update landing alongside the expansion, and several of them apply to the base game too. The update also adds bulk loadout saving, numbered monster toughness values instead of the star system, an option to move the in-game clock next to the health and stamina bars, and a classic-style health line in place of the reactive squiggle.

Character edit vouchers are being retired as well. Sales stop on December 3, 2026, after which players get 10 free Character Edit Vouchers and 10 free Palico Edit Vouchers to use until Ascendance arrives — at which point editing becomes free with no voucher at all. Anyone who already bought vouchers receives the Heavenly Hog and Beelzeboar pendants.

Ascendance release window and unlock requirements

Ascendance is a paid Master Rank expansion, not a standalone release, and it is set for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. No exact release date, price, or preorder details have been confirmed. It was revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 5, 2026, with the first full trailer shown during the September 2026 State of Play.

To start the story and enter Master Rank at launch, you need the base game, Hunter Rank 40, and completion of the 7-star assignment “Awaking From a Dream.” If you are behind on either, that is the work to do between now and release.

The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo covers character and Palico creation, the opening of the story, and all 14 weapon types, and its save data carries into the full game.

Capcom is releasing individual weapon showcases ahead of launch, so the remaining Boost actions for the other weapon types will be detailed one by one rather than all at once.
