The Chasm-Stalker is the rod sitting at the bottom of Mariana’s Veil, behind a new layer called the Obsidian Trench. It is not a drop and it is not a random reward. You unlock it by finishing a long questline in Fisch, surviving the trench, filling its bestiary, and then paying for it at an altar.
Quick answer: Complete Vaelor’s five descendant quests, open the Abyss Gate, discover 100% of the Obsidian Trench bestiary, then buy the Chasm-Stalker at the trench rod altar for 5,000,000 C$.
Chasm-Stalker rod requirements and cost
Four things gate the rod, and the altar will not sell to you until all of them are done.
- The Mariana’s Awakening questline from Vaelor in Roslit Bay, including all five descendant quests.
- Access to the Obsidian Trench through the Abyss Gate.
- 100% Obsidian Trench bestiary discovery, which includes the Skolopendra boss catch.
- 5,000,000 C$ in hand when you interact with the rod altar.

| Descendant | Layer |
|---|---|
| Ignis | Volcanic Vents |
| Glacius | Challenger’s Deep |
| Tenebris | Abyssal Zenith |
| Luminis | Calm Zone |
| Resonus | Veil of the Forsaken |
Finishing these quests also hands out Gauntlets, so there is no reason to skip objectives on the way down.
Open the Abyss Gate: Scylla, the riddle, and the layer gems

The altar is visible immediately, but interacting with it shows the real condition — return with 100% of the Obsidian Trench bestiary discovered, priced at 5,000,000 C$.
Trench Suppression and the white crystals
Entering the Obsidian Trench immediately applies the environmental debuff Trench Suppression. It accumulates for as long as you remain there, preventing you from staying in one location to finish the bestiary in one session.
The counter is scattered around the trench in the form of glowing white crystals. Interact with one and your suppression level is temporarily purged. Keep track of where the nearest crystal is before you commit to a long fishing spot.
Fill the Obsidian Trench bestiary to 100%
The trench holds 12 entries, two of which are the special encounters rather than normal catches. The regular species are:
- Pumice Puffer
- Scoria Scorpionfish
- Ash-Cloud Angelfish
- Obsidian Gaveltooth
- Cinder-Crust Gar
- Tectonic Toadfish
- Basalt Behemoth
- Magma-Glass Marlin
- Shatter-Tooth Shark
- Shatterjaw Shark

Veiled Charybdis
Veiled Charybdis is hooked in the rivers inside the trench and runs its own reeling minigame instead of the standard bar. You manage a progress lock and dodge incoming attacks while whirlpools try to strip your rod control. Lose control at the wrong moment and the catch is gone.

Skolopendra
Catch roughly four to six Veiled Charybdis and every crystal in the trench turns deep red. That colour change is the trigger for Skolopendra, the layer’s boss, to awaken. Its fight is another dedicated minigame built around red-zone dodges rather than normal reeling, and landing it completes the bestiary at 100%.
Buy the Chasm-Stalker at the rod altar
Return to the altar in the Obsidian Trench with the bestiary complete. The requirement text is replaced by a purchase prompt for 5,000,000 C$. Confirm it and the rod goes straight into your inventory.
You know it worked when the Chasm-Stalker appears as an equippable rod in your inventory with its own stat card, and casting swaps the reeling interface for the rod’s red centipede-style UI.
Chasm-Stalker stats, mutations, and streak system
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Lure Speed | 135% |
| Luck | 278% |
| Control | 0.3 |
| Resilience | 80% |
| Max KG | Infinite |

The Luck figure is what makes the rod interesting for selling fish, and the infinite max weight removes the usual ceiling on what it can land. On top of that it carries several passive abilities, a new mutation, and a streak system that exists only on this rod. In use it also rolls the Myriapodic and Obsidian mutations on catches.
Chasm-Stalker money grind results
A straightforward earnings setup for the rod is a Starforged Spirit enchant, Truffle Worm bait, and the Forsaken Shores pond during the day. That combination leans on the rod’s Luck rather than chasing specific rare spawns.

Over a 13-minute run, that setup produced 128 fish that sold in one Sell All for 14,267,104 C$. The haul included a Pirate Captain’s Goldfish appraised at 591,000 C$ and a Captain’s Goldfish at 267,000 C$.
That works out to roughly three times the rod’s purchase price in a single short session, which means the 5,000,000 C$ altar cost pays itself back almost immediately once you have the rod in hand. The hard part was never the money — it was the descendant quests, the Scylla riddle, and getting Skolopendra on the board.
