What Is My Purpose? is one of those quests that takes longer to find on the map than it does to finish. There is no combat, no collecting, and no escort. You accept it, you walk down a road in Thendal Grove, and you hand it in to a single NPC who does not stand still.
Quick answer: Follow the grassy road through Thendal Grove to Aamelia Windfield, who stands by the fruit cart near the archway and stone pillar, then click Complete Quest for experience.
Where to find Aamelia Windfield in Thendal Grove

Aamelia does not hold one spot. She patrols up the road toward the house, so if the marker looks empty, follow the path in that direction before assuming something is wrong. If she has been killed, she respawns near that house.

Add to Google Preferences →Choosing Your Purpose in Oribos is a different quest
Similar name, completely different job. Choosing Your Purpose is the Shadowlands quest that locks in your covenant, and it is the one people usually mean when they search for a “purpose” quest at max level. It starts and ends with Tal-Inara in the Ring of Fates in Oribos at coordinates 38.9, 70.0, requires level 60, and was added in patch 9.0.2.
It closes out the level-up portion of the Shadowlands campaign. Everything after it is max-level content, including the Covenant Campaign and access to the Maw and Torghast. Turning it in pays out 12g 87s plus experience, and awards the Choosing Your Purpose achievement, worth 10 points.
| Covenant | Representative | Oribos coordinates |
|---|---|---|
| Kyrian | Polemarch Adrestes | 36.2, 64.2 |
| Night Fae | Lady Moonberry | 39.7, 60.9 |
| Necrolords | Secutor Mevix | 43.0, 74.2 |
| Venthyr | General Draven | 44.8, 68.8 |
All four representatives stand in the same chamber as Tal-Inara, alongside a set of training dummies. Each one can hand you that covenant’s signature and class ability so you can test them before committing.

Tal-Inara immediately offers the next quest in the campaign, and it depends on your choice. That is Report to Adrestes for Kyrian, Report to Draven for Venthyr, Report to Moonberry for Night Fae, or Report to Mevix for Necrolords. Pick it up before you travel to your sanctum.
The Threads of Fate version for alts
Alts who opt into The Threads of Fate get a second version of the quest at level 50, following Re-Introductions. The order flips: you choose your covenant at the map first, and speaking to the four representatives becomes optional. It pays 11g 70s along with experience, and hands you your covenant abilities straight away.
Tal-Inara then offers Aiding the Shadowlands instead of a Report quest, which lets you pick which of the four zones you level through first.
How to check whether you already completed it
If you are not sure whether a character already picked a covenant through this quest, paste this into chat. It prints true if the level 60 version is flagged complete.
/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(57878))
Swap 57878 for 62000 to check the Threads of Fate version on an alt. Between the achievement popup, the covenant banner, and that flag returning true, there is no ambiguity about whether the quest actually registered.
