Patch 1.0.3 for Halloween: The Game Buffs Michael and Nerfs Civilian Melee

How update 1.011 rescales Capability and Athleticism, arms Michael after every knockdown, and trims weapon spawns across all maps.

How update 1.011 rescales Capability and Athleticism, arms Michael after every knockdown, and trims weapon spawns across all maps.

Two weeks after launch, Halloween: The Game got the balance pass that Civilian squads had been daring the developers to make. Patch 1.0.3, shipping as update 1.011 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 22, 2026, takes aim at the strategy of surrounding Michael Myers, knocking him down with a Wood Axe, and doing it again the second he stands up.

Quick answer: One-shot Michael downs are gone. Melee damage now scales down at high Capability, Michael gains a buff window after standing up, and Wood Axes and Pick-Axes hit softer and slower.

Michael’s post-down buff window

The headline change is what happens the moment Michael gets back on his feet. He already had some protection after a Downed state; 1.0.3 layers a short timed buff on top of it so an aggressive group cannot simply chain him into a second knockdown.

  • Stagger immunity for the duration of the buff
  • Increased Damage Resistance
  • Increased Melee Damage and Melee Attack Speed
  • Increased Health Regeneration
  • Daze Resistance

Michael’s Bloodthirst damage resistance also went up across every tier, which stretches out melee exchanges rather than ending them in one or two swings. The practical read for Civilian players is simple. Knock him down, then leave. Standing over him to finish the job now hands him a window where he hits harder, swings faster, and cannot be staggered.

One quality-of-life tweak lands on his side too. Placing a Shape Mine no longer brings Michael to a complete stop, so he keeps moving through the animation.

Capability and Athleticism now scale differently

Instead of nerfing individual characters, the patch flattens the curve on two stats. High values return less than they used to, and low values return more. That pulls Bob and Laurie down toward the middle while lifting the characters nobody was picking.

StatHigh stat valuesLow stat values
Capability (melee damage)Less effectiveMore effective
Capability (grab struggle)Less effectiveUnchanged
Athleticism (move and sprint)SlowerFaster

Two perk-side sources of burst damage got trimmed alongside that. The Heavyweight trait now grants less Fear Resistance and less Melee Damage, and the damage bonus Civilians receive while Drunk was reduced. Stagger cooldowns for Civilians are longer as well, so the shove-and-swing loop resets more slowly.

Fast runners such as Jennifer, Thomas, Bob, Lynda, and Alexis lost top-end speed, while low-Athleticism characters like Annie move noticeably better than before.

Weapon damage, durability, and spawn rates

The Wood Axe and Pick-Axe were the backbone of the slasher meta, so both were tuned down on speed and damage. Loot tables changed too, making strong weapons something you hunt for rather than something you trip over.

Weapon or categoryChange
Wood Axe, Pick-AxeSlower combo attack speed
Wood Axe, Pick-AxeLower light and heavy damage
All melee weaponsReduced durability
Heavy melee, rifles, shotgunsFewer spawns on every map
ShotgunHigher close-range damage

The slower combos are deliberate. Bigger gaps between swings give Civilians a window to shove and interrupt Michael mid-combo, and give Michael the same chance to react when the axe is pointed at him. Separately, a bug that drained far more Wood Axe durability than intended has been fixed.

Grabs, struggling, and the Pocket Knife minigame

Grabs move in two directions at once. Escaping a standard grab is easier at Stalk Tiers 0 through 2, and a failed grab attempt now knocks you around less, so you can slip away instead of stumbling into the next swing. High Capability no longer helps as much with struggling free.

Pocket Knives went the other way. The break-free minigame is slightly harder, which buys Michael a little more time to start a Context Execution. The team has flagged knives for deeper tuning later, so treat this as a partial adjustment rather than a final answer.

Scoring now rewards ordinary Residents

Special Targets are worth fewer points to kill, while both saving and killing standard Residents are worth more. The goal is a score that reflects how the whole match went instead of who rushed the marked names first, and it leaves room for late swings when a team clears a house full of ordinary survivors.

Fixes that change what actually works

Several long-running bugs that decided matches are gone. These are worth knowing because each one removes a behavior players had learned to expect.

  • Civilians can no longer be executed after successfully struggling free from a grab
  • Losing the ability to move after breaking a grab, including grabs during vehicle or bicycle interactions, is fixed
  • Emotes can no longer be used to cancel animations
  • Shape Jump and Killer Sense no longer get stuck on cooldown for the rest of a match
  • Michael no longer collides with the Police Wagon during Shape Jump
  • Bolt Cutters open containers again even at low durability
  • The merry-go-round in Orange Grove Estates is no longer a safe spot Michael cannot reach
  • Private Match hosts can unlock trophies and achievements

Challenge requirements cut across the roster

Progressive Challenge goals got a sweeping reduction, including for 1978 Michael, Laurie, Bob, and Annie. Some targets were roughly halved, with Laurie’s survival challenge dropping from 30 completions to 15. Challenges that ask you to knock Michael off his feet or to blind, disorient, or stun him are easier to finish as well.

If you already passed the new, lower requirement before the patch, the challenge will not auto-complete. You need to earn any further progress toward that objective once, and it closes out. Passive Challenges also keep gaining progress after Prestiging, though that is a temporary workaround while the underlying locked-challenge bug is investigated.

How to confirm you are on the new build

Check the version stamp in the main menu. It should read 1.0.3, which appears as update 1.011 in the PlayStation download list. In-match, the easiest tell is knocking Michael down once and watching him get up unstaggerable and swinging faster than he did last week.

Taken together, the patch pushes Civilian play back toward avoidance. Weapons are rarer and break faster, top-end speed is lower, and the one combo that reliably ended a chase no longer does. Fighting Michael is still on the table, but it now works best as a single disruptive hit followed by running in the other direction.
