World of Warcraft: Where to Use Benedict’s Key

Benedict’s Key is a unique item in World of Warcraft Classic with exactly one purpose. It fits one locked container on the Horde starting continent, and using it there rewards a quest item you cannot get any other way.

Quick answer: Use Benedict’s Key to open Benedict’s Chest, found on Tiragarde Keep’s top rampart along Durotar’s eastern coast.

What Benedict’s Key unlocks

Benedict’s Key is an Item Level 1 unique key. It unlocks Benedict’s Chest in Durotar and nothing else. When you open that chest, you loot the Aged Envelope, a quest item that begins the quest The Admiral’s Orders.

This item was removed from the modern game in patch 4.0.3a, so it exists only in World of Warcraft Classic. If you are playing retail, the chest and its quest are no longer present.

Get Benedict’s Key from Lieutenant Benedict

The key drops from Lieutenant Benedict, a level 8 hostile human found in Durotar around Tiragarde Keep. The drop is near-guaranteed, at roughly 98 percent, so a single kill almost always leaves the key in his loot.

Reach Benedict’s Chest at Tiragarde Keep

Tiragarde Keep sits on the eastern coast of Durotar, along the shoreline near Skull Rock and Razor Hill. The chest is not at ground level. It waits on the highest open rampart of the main keep, so you have to climb through the building to reach it.

Travel to Tiragarde Keep on Durotar’s east coast. Kul Tiras Sailors patrol the ground outside the front gate, so expect a fight as you approach the entrance steps.

Walk up the front stairs and pass through the portcullis gate. This puts you inside the gatehouse and into the lower corridors of the keep.

Push through the ground-level passage, dealing with the Kul Tiras Sailors and Kul Tiras Marines inside. Continue straight into the main interior hallway that leads to the stairwells.

Take the wooden staircase up. Go through the upper doorway and climb the second flight to reach the roof ramparts.

Step out onto the top wooden deck. Benedict’s Chest sits against a boarded-up wall on the walkway. Right-click it to unlock it with the key and take the Aged Envelope inside.

Confirm it worked and start The Admiral’s Orders

You know the key was used correctly when the Aged Envelope appears in your bags. Its tooltip reads “This Item Begins a Quest” and points to The Admiral’s Orders. Right-click the envelope to accept the quest and follow its objective from there.

Because Benedict’s Key is unique and the chest only holds the one quest item, there is nothing further to do with the key afterward. Reaching the rampart, opening the chest, and picking up the envelope is the full extent of its use.
