Graveyard Keeper 2: How to Get the Love Novel (Romance Novel)

The Love Novel in Graveyard Keeper 2 is a single quest item that you cannot craft, buy, or find lying around. It only appears once you unlock the ability to hire the town’s looters, and it exists to be handed to Herbert during his “Herbert and?” quest. The path to it runs through one small fight and one conversation at the port.

Quick answer: The Love Novel comes from the Wharf Rats quest. Win Town brawl II by Town’s southern wall for the Keys for Looters, then use them at the Dockside Club to order the novel.

Love Novel: what it is and where it fits

The Love Novel, also called the Romance Novel in Herbert’s quest text, is a story-only item. No merchant will buy it, and it stays locked in your inventory until the moment you hand it over. Herbert waits for it in the Barracks.

Win Town brawl II for the Keys for Looters

The looters will not take an order from you without the right key, and that key drops from a fight inside Town. This battle is easier than the tutorial defense, so you should be able to clear it early.

Cross the main gate bridge from the Crossroads into Town, then take the inner route downward toward the fortified southern wall and its tower courtyard.

Interact with the squad prompt near the wall to open the Town brawl II encounter. The screen shows Squads 1/2, a Defense power of 24, and a note that construction is unavailable during the fight. Choose Start battle.

Win the fight to receive the Keys for Looters. The item description confirms its purpose: it can be used at the Port Club to place an order with the looters.

Order the novel at the Dockside Club

With the keys in hand, head to the port on the eastern side of Town. The looters sit inside the Dockside Club, which the key text also calls the Port Club.

Head east from Town, then use the wooden bridge over the water canal to enter the port district.

On the docks’ northern side, go inside the Dockside Club building.

Go to the looter at the left-hand table and select Make an order. The keys obtained here unlock the Wharf Rats perk, allowing you to hire the looters to retrieve items from the city, including the Love Novel.

The Dockside Club opens up as part of the port storyline, so make sure you have progressed far enough to reach and enter it before trying to place an order.

Confirm the unlock and hand the novel to Herbert

To check that everything worked, open the Quests tree from the menu. The Wharf Rats node should show as completed, with the note that you can now hire looters to find the stuff you need in the city. That is your sign the order system is active and the novel is on the way.

Once the Love Novel is in your inventory, it feeds directly into the “Herbert and?” quest. That quest asks you to procure the Romance Novel through the mysterious person in the Dockside Club, then bring it to Herbert in the Barracks. Hand it over there to complete his request.

Turning in the novel gives you +10 reputation with Herbert and 2 Town Gratitude, and the quest closes with Herbert now looking for a reader. That step opens the follow-up quest, The Nun Also Reads, so the Love Novel is worth grabbing as soon as the looters are available.
