The final Testing Facility in Unsupervised Science sits in the Unknown zone, and it hides the largest version of the Power Core puzzle in the quest. Instead of the four cores found elsewhere, this room uses five, all wired to transmitter towers you have to keep powered during a timed shutdown. Clearing it opens the Threshold, the route that ends the quest.

Quick answer: Start the shutdown at the console, then transfer charge from active Power Cores into any core whose red light starts blinking until all five towers glow green. Then enter the Threshold and finish at Dr. Grant’s body.

The Threshold only opens after you have shut down all six Testing Facilities. If the door beyond the Unknown chamber stays closed, you still have experiments left in Downtown, Central, the Evacuation Zone, the West Incursion Zone, or The Park.

How to reach the Unknown Testing Facility

The facility sits near the middle-west side of the fast travel point in the Unknown zone. Like every lab in this quest, the map marker points at the surface, so you drop in from above rather than walking to a marked door.

Fast travel to Twisted Rooftops using the rooftop fast travel door. This puts you on the building directly above the entrance.

Move to the edge of the rooftop and drop down into the orange-brown circular intake pipe. This metal duct runs straight into the maintenance tunnel and leads to the puzzle chamber.
Follow the tunnel to the observation deck. You will arrive on a platform that overlooks the chamber, with the transmitter towers below and a central computer console in front of you.

Solving the five Power Core puzzle

This experiment runs on a timed shutdown. Once you begin, the towers light up red, and you have to feed power into whichever core needs it before the timer expires. The goal is to have all five towers showing green at the same time.

Interact with the console on the observation deck to trigger the sequence. Barriers open and the towers switch on with red beams as the countdown starts.

Descend into the chamber, then find the first power unit below. Switch it on to power up its tower.
Watch the cores for a blinking red indicator. When one calls for power, transfer the charge from an already-active core into it, then keep moving the charge around as different cores blink. The system has to stay balanced for the full sequence.
Use jumps and the upper catwalks to reach the elevated towers. Several power boxes sit on raised platforms, so keep your mobility up to hit them quickly before the timer runs out.

Hit the final switch so that all five towers show green together. This completes the shutdown.

Confirming the shutdown worked

You know the puzzle is solved when every tower stays green and the automated voice announces, “Attention. The Impermanence Threshold is open.” The quest objective updates and the console reads SHUTDOWN COMPLETE. A new doorway labeled “Go Into the Threshold” opens nearby.

Before moving on, sweep the tunnel just past the door. You can pick up Notes From Dr. Grant on a desk to the left and the Firebreaker Goggles accessory in the same area.

Completing the Threshold

The Threshold is a short branching maze of maintenance corridors with scientist names marked on the floor. Two of the obvious paths transform your character and lead nowhere, so the route matters.

The Threshold corridors are lined with labeled stations; follow the right-hand route rather than the marked paths. Shown at 01:21 in WoW Quests’s video. Image: Remedy Entertainment
Continue ahead to the junction marked “Janson” on the left and “Puchalski” straight on. Avoid both paths: the left one transforms you into a chair, while the forward path makes you a telephone booth.
Turn right and follow the path to the end, then hit the board blocking the way.
Follow the left-hand path and collect the electrical charge from the Power Core.
Return to the straight path. When it splits, go left and place the charge into the dead Power Core. Collect the crafting materials from the room that opens.
Go back to the split and continue straight. At the end you will find Dr. Titus Grant’s body. Interact with it to pick up Dr. Grant’s Final Report and finish Unsupervised Science.

Unsupervised Science rewards

Finishing at Dr. Grant’s body marks the quest complete and hands over the final rewards, on top of the Firebreaker Goggles and notes collected inside the facility.

With the report in hand and the Threshold Researcher trophy unlocked, Unsupervised Science is fully closed out, and the Unknown zone’s underground network no longer has any active experiments left to shut down.
