Dead Rails has switched on its first Dispatch, a limited-time event called the Permadeath Challenge, and the headline rule is simple: every way of coming back to life is turned off. The studio laid out the details on the game’s Discord, framing Dispatches as short, rule-bending events that run between the normal content drops. This first one lasts 72 hours, and future Dispatches can be as brief as a single hour.

Quick answer: Start a run with the Permadeath mode selected, then bank distance. There are no revives, and every kilometre you travel counts toward bond payouts and unlockable Lobby titles.

What Dispatches are in Dead Rails

Dispatches are a new event format meant to push Dead Rails toward a weekly update rhythm. Instead of waiting only for full content patches, the game now drops in short events that twist the usual rules for a set window. The Permadeath Challenge is the first of them, and its run time is fixed at 72 hours. The studio has said later Dispatches can be much shorter, down to an hour.

Permadeath rules: what is disabled

In Permadeath mode, once you go down, you stay down. The mode removes every form of reviving in the game, not just one.

  • Class abilities that revive are turned off.
  • Self-revive purchases no longer work.
  • Bandaging a downed teammate to bring them back is disabled.

With every safety net gone, the mode shifts the focus away from clutch saves and toward how far you can push before the run ends. That distance is the currency here, not survival to the bridge.

Distance milestones, bonds, and titles

In Permadeath mode, every distance you cover adds to your personal running total, up to 500km, and contributes to a shared community target. Each checkpoint pays 25 bonds, which is the figure the studio confirmed in its announcement; the in-game event menu suggests higher tiers pay more, listing 400 bonds for the 500 km tier, but treat that as menu text rather than a settled schedule. Every checkpoint also unlocks a Title to equip and display in the Lobby. The community target awards free bonds at three separate milestones. You only have to hit the distance milestones; even partial runs count toward your total.

80 kmHard to Kill

Because the cap is 500km, you can keep chipping away across many runs rather than needing one perfect long haul. Each checkpoint you cross both adds bonds and moves you closer to the next equippable title.

Daily escalations across the three days

Every day of the Dispatch turns up the difficulty. Day 1 runs as normal Permadeath, and the following two days layer on tougher conditions.

DayModifier
Day 1One life, no revives
Day 2Zombies are faster and hit harder
Day 3More special enemies spawn

The escalations stack on top of the no-revive rule, so a distance total that felt safe on Day 1 gets harder to protect on Day 2 and Day 3.

How to start a Permadeath run

Head to the party platform in the Lobby and choose Create Party. Set the mode selector to Permadeath, and toggle Private if you want a solo run.
Load in and grab your starting gear from the Class Items crate, then stock coal for fuel. Distance is what pays out, so fuel management matters more than a full clear.

Fuel the boiler and drive to build distance. Every kilometre banks toward your personal total and the community goal, whether or not you reach the bridge.

You will know it is working when a tier notification appears as you cross a checkpoint, bonds are added, and the matching title becomes selectable in the Titles menu. Back in the Lobby, the Dispatch #1 progress bar reflects your running total, and equipped titles float above your character.
