RuneScape Reignited is a new permanent character type for the live version of RuneScape, built so players can begin in Gielinor from a shared starting point as if the game had launched for the first time. It runs inside the same worlds everyone already plays in, but it carries its own economy, its own hiscores, and no paid progression. Jagex announced it at the RuneFest 2026 Summit alongside a wider restoration push that strips out systems the community had long pushed back on.

Quick answer: Reignited launches on December 2, 2026 as a separate character type with a fresh economy and hiscores, and every Reignited character gets free access to members’ worlds from December 2 through December 12.

What RuneScape Reignited is

Reignited is a character type, not a separate game or a temporary season. Jagex describes it as the culmination of a year spent rebuilding RuneScape, and the start of a new chapter for the 25-year-old MMO. A Reignited character starts at level 3, enters a world with no Treasure Hunter, and trades inside a market that has not been shaped by decades of accumulated wealth.

The reveal trailer leans on that fresh-start framing throughout, cycling through restored towns, rebuilt landmarks, and the on-screen promises that define the mode: “START AT LEVEL 3 TOGETHER,” “IN A NEW, RESTORED WORLD,” “WITH NO TREASURE HUNTER… EVER,” “A FRESH ECONOMY,” and “WORLD FIRSTS AWAIT.”

The key point is that Reignited does not replace existing accounts. Jagex is calling the current playerbase “Veteran” characters, and the two types are designed to coexist the same way Ironman accounts live alongside everyone else today.

Launch date and the free members’ window

Reignited goes live on December 2, 2026. It arrives in a single update that also includes the first phase of the Remastered Journey and the Gielinor Adventure Guide.

From December 2 through December 12, every Reignited character gets free access to members’ worlds and content. That is a ten-day window tied specifically to the Reignited launch, so anyone returning only to sample it should treat December 12 as the point where that no-subscription access ends. It is not a permanent removal of membership from the game.

As first announced, starting a Reignited character worked like creating an Ironman account, meaning you could not convert an existing account into one. That restriction is among the things Jagex has since said it may change before release.

How Reignited and Veteran characters differ

Both character types walk through the same Gielinor and can chat with each other freely. The separation only kicks in where it would affect the economy or progression. Reignited characters also get access to Reignited-only worlds that Veterans cannot enter.

Each type has its own Grand Exchange, and you cannot switch between them. A Veteran character can never trade on the Reignited market and vice versa. The two cannot share boss encounters either, though they can form or join the same clans and homesteads. As originally stated, there is no way to convert a character from one type to the other, because doing so would compromise the integrity of the two separate economies.

Reignited characters also cannot buy Radiant Stars from the Marketplace, keeping the no-paid-progression promise intact.

A fresh economy and the Hall of Legends

A Reignited market starts empty. Materials that sit in abundant supply for long-standing players can be scarce for Reignited characters, since nothing has flooded the economy yet. Jagex frames that as an opening for players who want to build a character around sourcing and selling those rare resources.

Reignited characters have their own HiScores, and the first to hit specific milestones are recorded in a new Hall of Legends. Those milestones span combat, skilling, quests, exploration, and some deliberately lighter challenges. Anyone who claims a world first is immortalized with a permanent statue of their character and the achievement they earned.

What launches alongside Reignited

Reignited does not land on its own. Three systems ship in the same December 2 update and change the early and wider game for every character type, not just Reignited.

The Remastered Journey

Your Remastered Journey begins with your first steps in Lumbridge, refreshing the experience from gameplay to graphics. The work is rolling out in stages: the opening installment arrives in December, with Parts II and III due during 2027. The December 2 update won’t overhaul every older quest, interface, or route at once.

The Gielinor Adventure Guide

The Adventure Guide is a guided route through the game’s existing content. Jagex calls it a golden path through the best RuneScape has to offer, meant to cut down the time players spend unsure what to do next. It does not remove the game’s breadth. It sits on top as an organizing layer so new and returning players are not forced to lean on an outside checklist to find a direction.

Officially supported plugins

Plugins become an officially supported, directly integrated part of the game. Jagex names Quest Helper specifically, alongside a range of community-developed plugins. The emphasis is on keeping that customization inside a supported system rather than relying on unofficial clients. Confirmed availability starts with named tools like Quest Helper, and the lineup can grow over time.

A year of restoration has seen Dailyscape, auras, and MTX items removed, after Hero Pass was cut earlier. Completed projects include upgrades to the Grand Exchange, a rework of the Player-Owned House, an overhaul of the Player Avatar, and the Dungeoneering Remaster. Jagex describes its 2027 roadmap as the biggest content year so far. Starting in January, it brings a grandmaster quest, the return of familiar characters, and locations that have been gone for many years.

Why Jagex is re-evaluating Reignited

Soon after the announcement, many players raised concerns that Reignited would split an already-declining playerbase, drain the Veteran worlds, and make existing accounts feel sidelined. Some protested in-game. On October 6, Jagex published a post stating it was re-evaluating the mode and apologizing for making existing players feel like they were no longer the focus.

On October 9, Mod Ryan followed up with a set of early directions the studio is exploring. None of these are confirmed changes, and some have not yet passed technical feasibility checks. They include:

  • Letting an existing account and membership “Reignite” a character and flip between its Veteran and Reignited versions, similar to toggling Leagues worlds.
  • Exclusive Veteran rewards, such as a special cosmetic Max Cape that cannot be earned later and carries over if a Veteran chooses to Reignite.
  • Rethinking how long Reignited-only worlds exist, up to removing them from the plan entirely.
  • Easing cross-character restrictions after the Reignited economy settles and world firsts are claimed.
  • Allowing cosmetics, extra bank spaces, holiday rewards, skilling pets, and titles to come across when Reigniting.

Jagex says the long-term vision keeps Veteran and Reignited characters on equal footing, with no predetermined plan to merge the two economies and no plan to rule a merge out either. The studio also said RuneScape currently has hundreds of thousands of members and is on a slight decline, and that it expects many returning players to pick up their existing characters rather than start fresh.

Because this is an active re-evaluation, the trading, world, and subscription rules described above reflect the original plan. Several may change before the December 2 launch.

Reignited is not RuneScape 4

RuneFest 2026 also revealed RuneScape 4, a separate next-generation MMO that is still years away and has no release date. Reignited belongs to the current RuneScape and has a firm December 2 launch plus a detailed 2027 roadmap. The two are easy to confuse because they were announced together, but they are not the same project. For players deciding whether to jump back in this winter, Reignited and its ten-day free window are the immediate thing to watch.
