How scroom catching works

Two of the three badges depend on the catching minigame, so it helps to understand the three phases before you chase them. You need an instrument equipped first; the first one is the Wooden Lute, which Leo gives you.

Walk up to a scroom with your instrument equipped and start playing to it. A circular tuning gauge with a moving marker appears; tap (mobile) or click (PC) while the marker is inside the coloured wedge. Each hit is rated “Good!” or “Perfect!”.

The timing bar runs along the bottom as your character plays to a nearby scroom.
Hold the control to find the correct frequency. Slide the marker until the jagged red waveform settles into a smooth wave. The screen prompts you with “Hold to find the correct frequency!” while you do this, and finding the right frequency speeds up tuning.

The frequency step: hold to tune the red signal graph until the wave matches.
Keep the scroom inside the sliding catch zone by dragging it left and right. When the progress bar at the bottom fills completely, the scroom is caught and the screen shows its name and frequency; a clean run can count as a “Perfect Catch”. If the scroom drifts outside the zone, the zone turns red and progress drains, and if it drains away you get “Your Scroom got away…” and have to try again.

Filling the catch-zone bar ends in a “Perfect Catch!” and adds the scroom to your collection.

First Note: catch your first scroom

First Note is the earliest badge and its description reads simply, “Catch your first scroom.” It unlocks during the opening quest, “Getting Started!”, the first time you complete a catch.

Spawn into Songkeeper’s Grove, collect the Wooden Lute from Leo when “Getting Started!” tells you to, and equip it.
Find a scroom nearby and run the catching minigame. The catch screen names the scroom and its frequency, for example “You caught: Bluebell! Frequency: 70.8 Hz”. The instant it lands, the First Note badge card appears in the bottom right.

Magic Melody: unlock the Ocarina

Magic Melody is tied to a quest rather than a catch. Its description, “Unlock the Ocarina. Reminds me of a certain green hero…”, is a nod to the instrument it hands you. You earn it by finishing “The Next Step” for Halden.

Open the Quest Log and select “The Next Step”. Its first objective is “Find Halden in the grove.”

Follow the path through the grove to find Halden resting on a log beside a campfire. Talk to him to start the statue objective, which asks you to pay respects at five weathered statues scattered around Songkeeper’s Grove.

Reach the fifth and final statue, on a stone plinth inside a low stone ring with a glowing ground lantern next to the trunk of a large tree on the outer path of the grove, and pay respects to complete the 5/5 objective. The quest then updates to send you back to Halden.

Return to Halden and choose “[Accept the gift].” He hands over the Ocarina, and the Magic Melody badge card appears. The Ocarina joins your hotbar as slot 5.

With the Ocarina equipped, you can play its songs. Open its interface, pick the Homeward Melody under Known Songs, and input Left, Down, Up, Left to return to your set spawn point.

Harmonic Ear: catch a Harmonic scroom

Harmonic Ear is awarded for catching any scroom with the Harmonic prefix, as its description states, “Catch a Harmonic scroom.” The route is to keep catching scrooms around the grove until a Harmonic one appears.

With your instrument equipped, roam Songkeeper’s Grove and catch whatever scrooms you find. Types range from common Redcaps up to the rarest Eversung, and each catch shows its own frequency.

Near the spawn point you will pass the leaderboard boards, which track Most Catches, Most Playtime, and Most Chimes. They are not required for the badge.

Select your instrument in the hotbar, approach a scroom, and run the three catch phases. Hit the tuning gauge, match the frequency, hold the creature in the catch zone, and fill the bar. Keep going through as many scrooms as it takes.

Watch the name of each scroom you catch; a Harmonic variant carries the Harmonic prefix, as with Harmonic Toastbud.

Once those three cards have popped in the bottom-right corner, the next ones within reach are Tuned In (100 catches), Budding Collector (25 Scrooms in your Index) and Grovewalker (the full Songkeeper’s Grove Index). First Note and Harmonic Ear both come straight from the catching loop, while Magic Melody is the one you unlock through Halden’s quest, so the Ocarina and the badge arrive together the moment you accept his gift.
